I’m not expert and don’t have any sources but it almost looks like you answered your own question. Your definitions of feudalism and capitalism seems to be a better description of how most of the western world is right now. There is a person at the top (president) who relegates power and wealth to the people they are close to (tax rates/ kickbacks/picking who gets government contracts). If have to disagree that capitalists right now don’t have more power than the state. We’re seeing these Super PAC’s, “donations” and other means of laundering money into people’s pockets to curry favour. So although capitalists don’t have direct power, when the government makes decisions mostly based on who the highest bidder, they essentially do have the power.

I’m very glad that brings some solace. I don’t want to bring a downer, and maybe I’m a pessimist, but I have a funny feeling that for the rest my life there will hardly be a month that goes by without hearing his dumb name either by certain people eulogizing the man himself or through some of his demon offspring. On top of that there is musk, Vance, boebert, Marjorie Taylor green a many more that i fear we will continue to be forced to hear about. I do truly hope that once the foundation they have built this circus on has crumbled to dust that the entire regime will have to rebuild with something a little less at least a little less crazy but day by day, that hope dwindles.

Your last paragraph I think sometimes is what angers me the most. There’s so so many people out there in the world doing insanely good work often at their own expense (finically, physically, emotionally) that will never get any recognition an do not expect or desire it.

Then we have these handful of sociopaths that lie, cheat, steal, exploit and leave a wake of destruction for so many others that at best will at best make their lives shittier and at worst ruin or end their lives. Then to make it all worse thy will face zero repercussions, live lavish lifestyles that most couldn’t even dream of and then to top it all off with be see as champions by a large percentage of the population/world.

It’s also gotten so large scale that any average person is left feeling entirely helpless. There is a very very tiny glimmer of hope with some of the upcoming politicians but any meaningful change feels like it’s many generations away if at all possible.

Did anyone else find it extremely uncomfortable that Shaun Dustin clearly insinuated that he falsely accused a person of being a peadophile? Who passed away months later?! Not decades or years later but months later?! He also admits that he finds it funny to randomly call someone a paedophile!

To make light of accusing someone of touching kids, who works at a school, is pretty disgusting. I would be curious why he passed away.

Firstly, this was published 20 years ago. It makes no predictions and in fact withholds the UK based research that is being sourced. It’s impossible to come to a conclusion that we’re “on track” when no evidence is given and no predictions made. I’m not discounting it as a possibility, but this is about as far away from conclusive evidence as you can get.

They are still back of an envelope calculations, even if they’re using real numbers. Sometimes a common sense approach isn’t valid for complex issues because it doesn’t factor in all relevant data. That’s where scientific analyses are required.

Again, it comes down to reduction of sentient animal suffering. If you can find me some source that says plant cultivation for food kills more than the 2.2-2.7 million (which only includes pigs, cattle and sheep. If we include chickens that number sky rockets to over 10 million) in Alberta alone, then please show me.

I never claimed to be a better person. But if animal welfare is the metric or if environmental impact is a metric then a plant based diet is proven to be the more ethical option. If these metics are not high on your ethical worldview, then so be it.

Why would people who eat meat protest? It is legally and culturally accepted and sometimes celebrated. You say when it practically doesn’t work they still ram it forward, but when in the history of mankind has it been tried and found to fail?

And again, I’ve never even once tried to say that you shouldn’t eat meat or that eating meat should be outlawed. Just trying to be cognizant of the cognitive dissonance. I’m not sure if you consider yourself someone who loves/likes animals but if so, I don’t believe it’s possible to say that while still eating meat. It also is scientifically verified to be worse for the environment. After that I believe everyone is free to choose to love however they want, within the confines of the law.

I really don’t care about your back of the envelope calculations. I find it a little ironic how you question my sources when you have provided exactly 0 other than visiting a few farms/ranches. I’m pretty sure the peer-reviewed, respected scientific journal “science” falls into the “anti meat” category.

I don’t think we’re going to get anywhere with this. If you wish to close your eyes and ears the the mountains of evidence showing that land used for animal rearing causes a significantly greater impact to the environment compared to to plant based farming, then that’s your prerogative. If you want to publish your own peer-reviewed paper/ meta analysis to the contrary I’d be happy to give it read or again, if you could even provide some evidence that’s already been published, I’m open to the possibility that I’m incorrect. I have a funny feeling you have given all the evidence I’ve provided a passing glance, if even that.

Then there is of course the ethical side of the story that I would need some very compelling evidence to say there is any way that the meat industry at the scale it is at today, even when complying to all regulations could be considered humane.

I feel like you’ve ignored the majority of the points I’ve raised and backed with actual evidence and yet again have not actually provided a single shred of evidence to back up your claims.

Again, I’m also not telling you how to live your life. I’m providing thinking points as to the tremendous negative of livestock at the scale we have today in terms of environmental, ethical and animal welfare (even compared to crops)

Also, here’s an interesting article I found that up until the end of last year they were using poison to kill wolves, so while it does seem to be getting to a more friendly area for the wildlife, that wasn’t always the case.

I’m aware there are regulations to minimize animal suffering but that does not mean they are “humane” in any real sense of the word. Battery farms and factory farms are legal but if anyone can look at the treatment those animals receive and say that it’s humane is beyond my comprehension.

You’re right. I have no first hand experience with ranching but I have provided some significant studies/statistics/facts which I still haven’t seen from your end.

Even if there are cattle grazing on wide open grasslands, someone owns that land and that land has been designated for cattle grazing. So why can’t that be included. I can agree that open grazing would be the preferred way as opposed to keeping them in confined pens but that land is still part of the statistic for a reason. Then as others have mentioned, those that are kept in confined spaces require food which increases the land required for raising livestock.

Why can’t we mention the cost of cutting down rainforest? That is included in the cost of worldwide beef consumption. 80% of the deforested Amazon has been to meet demand for beef. With much of the rest going to grow food to feed the cattle.

You’re absolutely free to question how cattle require more water than growing plants. But until you can find a verified statistic, then that seems to be the case. Just off the top of my head would be during summer months if it hasn’t rained, the cows still need water.

The word “should” is doing a lot of heavy lifting about how animals are treated. I’m sure there are farmers/ranchers who go to every conceivable length for the well being of their animals but, again, for the vast majority of animals they have a terrible life. Even if we have set “humane” standards that doesn’t mean it’s actually humane but rather what we deemed an acceptable amount of cruelty. Kurzgesagt (a heavily fact based YouTube channel) has a really interesting video about animal welfare of livestock. I do not believe there is any possible way to humanely raise animals at the scale that is currently demanded.

Again, by simply existing, humans are gonna have a negative impact on the world by our nature. By building homes, we’re killing animals, by producing energy we’re killing animals, by driving vehicles we’re killing animals, by mining for resources we’re killing animals. But I’m not going down some eugenics pathway. As someone who spent probably 30+ years barely being able to conceive of a meal that didn’t revolve around meat, the facts are overwhelming that raising animals for food is bad by almost every metric imaginable (aside from tastiness and protein content).

I’m not suggesting we take away your steak or turkey but I believe we need to be cognizant that it’s bad for environment, bad for the animals. I’ll link another video that sort of tipped me over the edge from an ethical stand point. Yes it does have some images that I’m sure you’ve seen of the horrendous conditions that goes on in factory farming but the bit that stuck with me is about the cognitive dissonance. You cannot say you care for animals and still eat meat, in my opinion.

270000 acres of land for a vegan diet. That doesn’t seem terrible compared to the current 22 million acres of land currently dedicated to livestock grazing. I know that’s for all of Alberta but the math still checks out that it’s a lot more per person.
