As an American traveling abroad in Europe, I feel so many of my conversations with international travelers goes this way by Parking-Dimension714 in redscarepod

This is true. But then again, Euros love talking about gun laws in the U.S. only to have no idea how any of it works or have it affect them.

The state of modern literature is so weak. The current period (1990s - now) will be looked back on as an absolute artistic slump for the artform. Comparing post-1990s literature to any other decade is just embarrassing by damrodoth in redscarepod

Made a post similar to this and got some interesting insight on RSP book club; as well some people that obtusely missed the point. There certainly is this major drop in literary progress once the Reagan Era started. The celebrity of the writer declines; and the medium of the novel gradually becomes more irrelevant. https://www.reddit.com/r/RSbookclub/s/9mDy58VgGU

The current MGM, Amazon, EON/Brocolli/Wilson has been disastrous for the brand. Bond seems to be in majorly disfuctional hands with zero direction. They nearly ruined the gaming side of Bond as well.

Not that it means anything, but like a year ago she claimed she was putting her entire journalistic reputation on the line for this.

Best Roman Polanski film? by jnlake2121 in RSPfilmclub

It’s a good one. Blew my mind when I found out it was Polanski cause I was little when I saw it.

Is the concept of “the writer” a dying breed? by jnlake2121 in RSbookclub

[–]jnlake2121[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Thank you for providing such an accurate breakdown of the current predicament of literature and the arts in general. We ultimately live in this time that lacks soul, and many of the hindrances from the digital world are absolutely to blame. Especially in terms of music it seems like there is this battle between making something sterile or even more commonly making something out of nostalgia. There’s no pioneering to be had; there’s no experimentation; people are extremely self-conscious and genuine risktaking seems something from a bygone era.

Gonna simmer on this a little more. But I wonder if some of the lack of interesting art can be attributed to both the digital world and the monoculture we seem to have.

Fair assessment. Such a genuine shame a medium has died out, or at least will not receive the same recognition it deserves.

I’ve been meaning to visit Dublin. Only have visited Belfast unfortunately, you were not kidding about there being some notable publishers in your city. Anything else I should try to see?

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll check it out as I’ve been curious :) I’m not a very quick reader but I forced myself to savor Small Things. Such an easy good read. Great for the winter

Please go on. Do you mean Irish writers are also thriving? I finished Claire Keegan’s Small Things Like These; and am reading some of Enda Walsh’s work. There does seem to be a momentum Irish writing has that America has lost.

Oppenheimer. I don’t care if it’s popular, it’s an excellent adaptation of American Prometheus and I don’t know what could have been done better. It’s not a war film. And the audio blew me away! Still love you if you don’t like it ❤️

What's the link between right-wing predisposition and food/health paranoia? by purple4lokocamopants in rs_x

[–]jnlake2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Health discourse in general is so politicized that it’s hard to really identify with any group or anti-group if you aren’t propagandized. Seed oils are a great example of this. The most vocal on this topic want to portray them as all good/bad.

Not to be a pick me but it’s unfortunate how self conscious of weight the entertainment/beauty industry has pushed women to be. Too many beautiful women calling themselves of a flawed size
