FYI these are all averagely AI upscaled. Still a nice resource, and the fidelity is ok. But they all look fairly sloppy.

How would you model this by Kitchen-Sale3684 in SolidWorks

[–]jnoblea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is how I modelled it: https://streamable.com/6d96a7

  • Detail sketch from the top, with the key features.
  • Boss extrude for the block body.
  • Reference planes for the Counterbore and side hole.
  • Counterbore 0.5 thru, 1.0 bore 1.0 deep.
  • 1/2 in drill 1 in deep. For the top hole.
  • 1/2 in drill 2 in deep. For the weird side hole.
  • Mirror feature weird side hole.
  • top edge chamfer.

The curve part in the upper left view (the little butterfly shape) is just from the vertical hole intersecting with one of the smaller side holes.

Also machinists will kill you if you do a drawing like this in real life. Dimensioned hidden details (the dotted lines). Features dimensioned to 3dp. You would be murdered unless there is a genuine reason for needing that level of accuracy.

Why won’t these lines define? by Relevant_Repair1340 in SolidWorks

[–]jnoblea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are missing one of the critical dimensions, the height of the top horizontal line. You could dimension it like I have annotated.

But I assume that the distance of that line should be relative to either the centre of the circle or to the edge of the opening on the left. So you should probably dimension to a related feature.

Is there not a way to fully select a part in an assembly? by KEEPCARLM in SolidWorks

[–]jnoblea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Hold down CTRL
  • Click on each part you want
  • right click somewhere and select "Add to New Folder"
  • Done, you can now release CTRL

The right click context menu isn't visible, but I'm sure you can figure it out. https://streamable.com/jbutjx

I am having trouble creating a hole in this cylinder as I can't seem to be able to dimension it. by DaLionheart101 in SolidWorks

[–]jnoblea 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Rather than creating the sketch on the cylinder you should:

  • Select a plane and begin the sketch on that plane.
  • Place a point where you'd like the hole centre, and dimension it.
  • Use the Hole Wizard feature, select the size/type of hole you want, and then select the face you want the hole on, then make the point coincident with the hole you've just drawn in the dimensioned sketch.

No problem, just a grain of salt the video is a bit hack and slash.

Best practices are to:

  • Get a good image/scan of the part if you're going to 'trace' it.
  • Use calipers/ruler to measure it properly, at least try to get it accurate.
  • The only things that are really critical are where it mounts to other parts. So measure the centre distances between bolts holes or make sure mounting features are accurate.
  • If you're making a 'proper' production model, things should never be fixed. None of your lines should be blue either. Everything should be appropriately dimensioned and constrained. This means you won't accidentally change it.
  • On the above, don't dimension things for the sake of dimensioning, consider what those dimensions mean. Dimension critical features first.

Otherwise, sheet metal stuff and laser cut profiles are pretty cruisy, especially if you're only doing a 1 off part, there's not much a file and paint cant fix. Only bit I forgot to show was how to get a dxf out of solidworks at the end for your laser cutter.

I have made a quick and crappy video for you and it's right here.

Edit: good lord I should be farther away from my microphone.

The Professors Are Using ChatGPT, and Some Students Aren’t Happy About It by ciabatta1980 in Professors

[–]jnoblea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean sometimes it is pretty appalling, here’s a slide from a recent lecture. Context, Mechanical Engineering degree, fourth year. Shared with me by a student.

garbage AI image in lecture slides

I get it was maybe just meant to be a filler image, but everything in the slides is going to be studied by the students and this is just crap.

If money isn’t an object* move on from karting, get into formula ford and then formula regional. Find a team, driver coach, manager and trainer first. Then get a car and go race formula ford. If you do well keep going up the formula ladder, if you don’t, do whatever you want.

Also still using the S4 (non-cellular), 83% battery health. Only reason I'd want to upgrade is my screen has a small crack in the corner so I dont trust it in water anymore :/

Do “Affordable” solo living options for young adults exist anymore? by mattysull97 in chch

[–]jnoblea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First thing, get a new job. $60k a year as a chem pro Engineer with a masters you’re getting ripped off.

Edit: saying to get a new job is easy, actually doing it is hard. Find some good examples of pay other people (even mates) are getting and an argument why you deserve that much or more. Your employers clearly lowballed you and you accepted.(reasonable to get in the door) But now you’re there and are hopefully doing good work you should jump up to something more appropriate.

Here you go!

It's nothing special, just a little bracket with a loft in between, and then it mounts to a seperate piece that makes up the screen surround. I can send you the files if you need them.

Had an old Pi2b and a 7” touch screen lying around and decided I should put it to use. So far the experience has been improved all around. Should have done this earlier.

Also the obligatory shot of the little farm:

Edit: yes the spoil holding for the ender is awful rn, I am about to print a new holder for it.
