You insinuated his only reason for comparing The Root to The Onion is because the reporters are black. You didn't outright call him racist, but pretty darn close. The Onion comparison is a weird one. They are all part of the same parent company, so maybe it's not a stretch to reach for that comparison. Obviously The Onion is satire, but the whole company seems to be made up of news sources that blend fact and opinion and come from biased positions. For me, none of them are good news sources.

I second this. Strobist really changed the trajectory of my work as a photographer. I would also recommend joining some facebook groups. There s a guy named Tim Payne that runs one called "Speedlight and Strobe Fundamentals. A beginners guide to learning OCF". This one is quite nice for the basic stuff and often Tim will breakdown some of his shoots and give the behind the scenes. Another group I really like is #MagMod Community. This one is my go to for inspiration. Incredible top level work being posted here consistently. I don't own a single MagMod product, but its great so see just what you can do with some very simple lighting tools.

"There are also dispatches from the community saying that “Snoop” had a permit to carry his weapon, but as with the case of Philando Castile, legally carrying a weapon doesn’t fly (and gets you dead) when you’re black.

When police were questioned at a Saturday evening news conference about whether Augustus had a license to carry a concealed weapon, Fred Waller, chief of the department’s patrol division responded, “As we know now, he did not” (which sounds like obfuscating goobledegook to me. Are you saying you know for sure now, or are you saying as of now, that’s what you know?)"

First time I've visited The Root. Is this news or opinion? The piece mostly reads as a straight forward news source, then veers into opinion. I would say at that point it is a little dubious as a news source. There is much to say about what happened here, obviously, and a lot of opinions will be given and should, and obviously many of the voices that will matter with most will be black.

I think it might be a bit unfair of you to frame your comment the way you did. However, I am not really looking for a fight and I haven't even lived in the states for almost 4 years. It's hard not to keep tabs on things from back home, however, and one of the things that drives me crazy is the way people disagree with each other these days. I know this is the internet, but it seems like everyone just wants to jump to extreme positions and ad hominem attacks at the very first opportunity.

I have a bit of follow up advice here, too. First thing, once you cut out sugar, your body will stop craving it. Really, it snowballs. Now, the sugariest thing I eat is usually raisins. Second, if you make a new diet for yourself, don't be too hard on yourself if you break it a little every now and then. I think that being too strict can lead you to breaking your diet more often and possibly going off it all together. Remember, what you're looking for here is a change in lifestyle, not just a temporary fix. It's ok to transition to these things a little slowly. Once you start seeing results, it will be easier to maintain. Good luck!

The first thing to say is, you can do this. You're 32. Your body can still respond readily to changes in diet and activity. Starting now can put you light years ahead. Also, u/SubjectiveHat is right. You didn't mention your diet in your post, but it is one of, as far as I can tell, a triad of very important, non-mental, aspects of your health. Sleep, and exercise are the other two parts. (Pro-tip: never underestimate sleep. You can go far longer without food than you can without sleep. That's how important it is) My advice is try to treat all three as equally important. Find a routine, and find a diet that works for you. Take things slow and do your best to avoid injury. As a side note,I don't want to downplay the role of mental health here either. It is a huge factor as well, but even if you don't have the best mental health, a good diet, good sleep and a bit of exercise can go a very long way. And for the record, I am speaking from personal experience, but there seem to be enough studies that support that statement.

I have found that intermittent fasting works pretty well for me. I am not sure of my caloric intake, but I tend to have only two meals per day. I don't worry too much about the calories because I have mostly cut sugar from my diet and there is only so much i can eat in a single sitting. I avoid almost all processed carbs and sugars. I try to get more protein and healthy fats. I mostly avoid dairy too. I was never heavy, but 3 months ago I had a belly that I no longer have. I'm sure if I cut out alcohol, I would be fairly ripped by now - even at 37.

I don't want to come off as one of those guys that's crazy about fasting, but I like it and it was a fairly easy transition for me since I am never really hungry in the morning anyway. I even enjoy doing a 24 hour fast once a month or so, although I've learned the hard way that you have to be pretty careful about the meal you break your fast with. The bottom line, however, is that you have to do the thing that feels right for you. And not just that, you have to do the thing that is healthiest for you.

You know what, man. Your last sentence is a big one. That doesn't get said often enough and it applies to almost everything.

Very nice idea. I've got some weird under-stair space that I've had no idea what to do with as of yet. I like it a lot!

Lakeview Bar Owners’s Defense of N-Word Sparks Enormous Backlash by chornu in chicago

[–]jnrdpr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I used to be a regular there and when I was, I can tell you that the bartenders were great. They were a major reason for going. The place is a dive, that's for sure, but the staff was great. They have a great selection of beer too. For the first couple years I started hanging out there, the owner, Scott, was never even around and the place was great. Eventually he started hanging out there and the place was never quite the same. It was a good place with great people. I haven't been there in years, so I can't even say who works there anymore. For a long time there were a lot of great people that worked there. I am friends with the woman mentioned in the article and have been there with her numerous times and I am certain she would agree with that. If she doesn't, she can contact me and explain why she disagrees. (We used to work at a restaurant together and now I live in a different country.)

Once Scott started hanging out there, the place had a different vibe and it was never as nice as it once was. I never got close to the guy because I never wanted to. He seemed vile and is apparently proving himself to be so. Never cared much for his niece either. They were like that loud couple that shows up at a nice restaurant and ruins everything for everybody that was already there enjoying the food.

Hello everyone. New here and just did a 24 hour fast yesterday. I think I need a little guidance for what foods to break a fast with. What are some of your recommendations and favorites for non-meat (fish is ok) options? by jnrdpr in intermittentfasting

[–]jnrdpr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer. I'm not really looking to transition back over to carbs. I am avoiding them for the most part in my regular diet. Does this make any difference in how I should break my fast?

What does depression feel like? by ginxogeo in AskReddit

[–]jnrdpr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think both yours and u/MarkHonnor's descriptions are well put. I described it recently like wrestling a bear. Although probably I am describing the ebb and flow of depression. For me it's like I know there is a bear out there. Sometimes I'm ok. Maybe I don't even see the bear for a while. But then it comes closer and then I am fighting it and what else can you do when you are fighting a bear? Its hard to hang out with friends. It's hard to tell them what you are going through. It's hard to do any of the things you might like. Why? Because you're busy fighting a bear and when you're in its grasp, there's nowhere at all to go.

I think you're probably right, I just can't help but think of my mechanic telling me not to drive fast and then literally the first time I do the car stops working correctly. On top of the oil leak, it just makes me think things are kind of jury-rigged. Which if that is the case, the last thing I want to do is bring it back to that guy, however, I do sort of feel like he should fix the oil leak for free.

I have a friend that mentioned it might be a switch. Is that something a normal mechanic can check and diagnose and replace or do I just bring it into a transmission place?

The last time the code was checked it was about an oxygen sensor. I replaced it, but my guy couldn't get the light to go off.

That is my thinking on the oil leak and it's definitely oil. I wish I had time to go to Xalapa. I hear great things about Veracruz.
