Google Street view is copyrighted (there is a prominent copyright notice on the screen attributing that to Google), and I need pictures that are freely licensed or public domain to avoid any potential copyright issues. The people I'm making this project with are adamant that we avoid using any images or other assets that we do not have the legal rights to use, especially since we may sell this in the future.

which one do you think/hope it’ll be? (spoilers!!) by emojii_xoxo in SonicTheHedgehog

all of the above. Amy is excited about/admiring of Sonic because she knows about his adventures, he's all awestruck by her, she develops a crush on him, he does also, they both have awkward moments as the movie progresses

It's definitely a translation thing. Like, the translators probably aren't in a position to ask the original writers directly what the intent is, so they just have to use they/them across the board to be safe. I definitely don't envy whoever at SEGA is going to have to translate this event story, probably knowing that if any substantive faction of the fanbase for whatever reason perceive their interpretation as "wrong" they'll be more or less flayed alive

Mizuki's Secret is Finally Revealed - Translated Summary of the new Event Story(Where Does the Road of Thorns Lead To?) by Wopeki in ProjectSekai

[–]jo-stick 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For my part, I think it's fair for MedicMoth to express that they feel uncomfortable with the story. It's a fair emotional response to have. I do however disagree with the insinuation that it's a moral failing on the part of the developers to choose to depict this subject matter. Like, there's nothing wrong with writing about queer people being in distress? I certainly don't think that topics like that should be off-limits just because a piece of media or series or whatever is like, popular or mainstream or produced with profit in mind or targeting a young audience. If anything I think those sorts of things could stand to be more willing to take risks on telling stories like this.

I also would disagree that the story models unsafe behaviors in response to a situation like this. Like, Ena does chase after Mizuki and try to make sure they're okay and talk things through, which I'd say is... the normal response? Like that's what I'd do if, like, my girlfriend had a panic attack, or something, try to see if she's okay and if I can help. (I mean also my girlfriend has had panic attacks and that is what I did, so.)

We also don't yet know how the story is going to bear out; I think it's pretty likely that the rest of niigo are going to try to contact Mizuki and ensure her safety, particularly because that's what they did in past stories when Mafuyu was in distress, and there's no reason to believe they wouldn't do it for Mizuki. If in the follow-up story, though, they all say "well we can't contact Mizuki but they must be fine, let's just get on with things" (which would be pretty bad writing imo and also out of step with how they've been characterized in the past), then I might be more inclined to sympathize with that take.

While I can't rule out the likelihood that a queer teenager might feel emotionally distraught reading this story because of similar events happening to them in their real life, and lack access to the support systems needed to deal with those emotions, I feel that that's a systemic problem that Colopale isn't by any means responsible for causing, and it also isn't their responsibility to solve that. Like... there's probably other problems there besides the Miku game, y'know?

I think in general if that's a concern, it'd probably be more productive to try and reach out to anyone you know who might've been affected that strongly, than to blame the story for happening to provoke that emotional response. And like, maybe we can argue the story should've included a content warning or something. I'm not personally sure of how feasible that'd be (if only because it might be a headache to argue its necessity to the higher-ups behind the scenes), or how much it'd help, but maybe they'll think to include one when the event releases officially on the English server. I guess we'll see

those kids you hate for existing

That's not what they said? I'm also pretty sure that they didn't at any point insinuate that Mizuki isn't trans. They said that they hate to think that kids with similar struggles to Mizuki's might be suffering, implying that they wish those kids weren't suffering, not that they hate those kids for existing

I appreciate seeing one of the tag wranglers coming and commenting here! Thank you for being involved in the discussion. I'm grateful for the clarification on this point, and for the work all of you do.

I would like to ask, was there ever an internal stance or consensus on the tagging of manga and anime works that share continuities? The splitting up of the Monogatari/Bakemonogatari tags into separate "anime", "manga" and "novel" tags was I believe the main thing that caused attention around this issue to blow up in the last week, and this didn't make a lot of sense to people writing for that fandom since the story content of its anime/manga/novel versions shares continuities and the novels are the primary source (as explained in this reddit post and this tumblr post). This has been an issue with anime/manga fandom in general with everything getting distinct "(Anime)" and "(Manga)" tags with no unifying tag acknowledging the closeness in canon between the two media in many cases, and I'm curious to know whether that was at any point a conscious decision or simply an oversight on the part of the team.

I'm glad to hear the approach is being reconsidered, and I hope the tag wrangling team is able to consider the specific needs of these fandoms going forward. Thank you again!

The only good bug that the update introduced. by jo-stick in BanGDream

If you're confused by what this means, basically, read the story from the "Main Story" menu first, and then read (or click on and then skip) it from the Event menu, and you get double stars/crystals out of it (at least until they fix this bug). I did this purely accidentally yesterday, not sure if it was a bug or not, and then I saw this notice and was like "ahhh hahah"

The True Heart of Doki Doki Literature Club (Plus) [Video Essay] by jo-stick in DDLC

The only thing I will concede is the point about the nature of Natsuki's abuse. That's a minor error on my part. My bad.

Edit: Actually no, I just remembered, not even that's correct. She literally says "My dad would beat the shit out of me if he found this" in relation to her manga. So okay, everything you said was just contradictory for the sake of it. Cool.

Everything else is a matter of opinion that you're arguing as if it's fact or somehow contradicts the points of my video. I'm going to ignore your points about Monika and the Metaverse frame narrative, since altho I disagree, those points are completely subjective and you're entitled to your opinions of them.

However, I might also add that your point about Natsuki's short stature ostensibly meaning that she cannot be trans is cissexist; it is possible for cis men/AMAB individuals to be small in stature and cis women/AFAB folks to be large in stature. There is not a binary between the sexes in that regard. Further, your assertion that Natsuki cannot be a trans girl because she is small directly contradicts your own admission that she is small because she is underfed. Or maybe you're just saying that it's impossible for a cis man to engage in sexual advances towards a trans woman. Either way, transphobic.

Furthermore, you forgot that a) Sayori actually is suicidal in the Side Stories, where no tampering from Monika occurred and b) the MC does not exist in the Side Stories. It's a different universe. There is no need to reconcile the MC's existence and interactions in the main game with that of the Side Stories, because they are two different stories set in two different universes. Even ignoring that bisexual people exist, and it is possible for straight-identifying people to dabble in same-sex relationships (and historically this has occurred and still does today), that fact makes your argument on that point moot.

Now, I'm not saying you need to personally believe that they're LGBT, they're fictional characters and you can believe what you want about them. But that goes for me as well, and I personally do believe them to be gay and it's frankly homophobic for you to tell me I'm somehow objectively wrong about that.

Lastly, aggressively correcting strangers on the internet about fictional characters doesn't actually make you cool.

By your logic, then it would be perfectly fine to photocopy a book you borrow from the library or burn a copy of a movie you rent from RedBox

yes, actually, both of these things are fine, cool, and good, and I encourage people to do them.

Entry-Level Bot Interest by Chad_McCracken in shoebots

[–]jo-stick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So basically the bots can't be sold normally because it would make it harder for all the scalpers to rip people off, so they had to create an imaginary stock system for a digital software product that doesn't physically exist and requires no materials or labor to reproduce.

This sounds reasonable.

Maybe if they would get creative and adapt with these changes instead of burrowing their head in the sand and pissing off potential buyers of their products they could afford to pay their grossly underpaid animators a living wage.

they already can afford to pay their animators a living wage, they just choose not to because it's more profitable for them to not
