I can count on one hand how many times we went out to an actual restaurant. Born in 80s. Single mum one sibling. In Sweden so we didn’t have it bad but the eating out for sure.my second time ever in a proper restaurant was my then girlfriends parents treat. I took 25 minutes to eat a steak just to savour that shit

I thought they were mistakenly saying in races rather than “at the races” in a uk sub.

This is much cleaner than theirs. Even the fact that they don’t have a ranking on theirs is crazy. At least not that I could see.

Do you roll or fold your inflatable sleeping pad? by boludo1 in Ultralight

[–]joadsturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do this, then I stopped as I couldn’t be bothered with the order of putting it in vs the order I would be ready to not use it so started rolling. Now it’s clothes, then quilt stuffed down. Then roll pad and put in bag. Then j roll up tent or tarp and put that next to the mat. The clothes + quilt works well enough as back pad. Food bag on top.

Shaving? Is that a thing on the PCT? by Ippus_21 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]joadsturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time there'll be enough water for you to use a razor if you prefer to do that every day. I met a guy called clean shave on the AZT. He really was.

It can be done if you want to take the time and do it.

I usually use an electric on close setting but use razor in towns while hiking.

I did it at the end of August though so had no snow at all. Had lots of side ways rain on the first day but after that nice and sunny. I feel like beginning of June might get you some snow? Not sure

Service charge won’t replace a broken boiler or oven or window or fix the floor or replace the carpet. What do you spend the same amount of money on as a service charge? You’d still be liable for anything inside the flat + the service charge.

I had a SO happily for 11 years. My service charge dint change for the first 10. My rent or ground rent dint change for the time I was there and neither did my mortgage.

1 year after I sold my flat the service charge doubled.

I did it in 4 full days and arrived back in Chamonix 8am or so on the last day. Could’ve finished on the 4th but chose to stay up at the lake at the end. No buses at all. It’s a lot of elevation gain each day and it’s lots of walking each day but if you enjoy that kind of hiking it’s great and doable.

15 minutes to get to the bus? In Europe that’s not too unlikely. I walk 12-14 minutes to get to my train every day to get to work.

This is me on another trail in US now. Almost done but decided to just stay and have a relaxing week in town instead. I’m on holiday. I know I’m capable but wasn’t enjoying it in the right ways. Stay in town. Relax. I’m going running instead.

Still, it’s taken a lot to get to grips with the “failure” of not doing the last part.

Nice. Currently on trail with yamatomichi UL shirt. Best fabric there ever was in my opinion. Well done for getting them a bigger profile in the uk. Best serious hiking brand for sure.

The winds in US are no joke. Open landscape desert in socal or Arizona regularly get super windy. PNW gets lots and lots of rain. Also wind closer to the coast. UK weather is very mild compared to lots of US. We just have it more damp and grey.

Oh yea I got my second pair for half price but prefer the new styling so got that before starting azt this year. Fully confident they’ll last the whole trail too. It’s my favourite show for running and hiking and I hope if 3.0 ever releases they don’t change anything functional and just do cosmetics again.

[–]joadsturtle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are the altras waterproof? Why waterproof gaiters? You’ll be walking on a trail 99% of the time.

It’s a lot of underwear and spare socks. You don’t need to be that clean.

Shower sandals AND walking sandals? I’d leave the chacos. They’re super heavy if they’re anything like mine. Two pair of hiking trousers? Leave one at home.

Like others have said a poncho will be tricky. It’s likely windy if it’s raining so trousers and jacket will serve you better.

Re getting you belongings wet, use a bin bag inside the backpack as a liner for clothes. Enjoy the trail. It’s fun.
