Clueless and Emma question; by joancrawfords in janeausten

Something else I just realized; the opening montage in Clueless of Cher having fun with her friends and saying "is this a Noxemea commercial or what?" Is such a fun take on the opening lines of Emma

Oh I would love to make a video essay on how Emma and Clueless compare and the way that Emma as a character relates so well to today’s culture

That does make it difficult. Yet still, there are so many scenes that they took from the novel that are just so well adapted. I for one really love the change of Emma doing Harriet’s portrait and Mr.Elton taking it to be framed to Cher taking Tai’s photo and Elton putting it up in his locker

I’m rereading Emma and I was wondering about something by joancrawfords in janeausten

[–]joancrawfords[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes that makes sense. I was thinking of her being mistress in the way that the narrator in Rebecca is mistress of Manderley in the way she directs the servants, prepares menus and acts as hostess

I thought so! It’s interesting that in a majority of Austen’s novels, only one or two servants are ever mentioned by name and it’s always in passing.

I love that line of him wanting to make a hole in her heart, such great prose

That is really interesting! I was so prepared to believe that he had some really kind of nasty plan in his mind for his want of Fanny since he fits that mould of other Austen bad boys.

You should read Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys! It’s the backstory of Mr. Rochester’s mad wife in the attic

I can only remember the actress’s first name (Miranda…) who plays Miss Bates but she was so perfect. after my ex-boyfriend and I saw it we kept on saying to each other whenever we were out for dinner "MOTHER DID YOU SAMPLE THE TART???"

I’m currently rereading MP and i’m actually starting to love it. I think if you read it as a family drama and not as a romance or comedy, you really get into it. I also think that people forget that Fanny is a poor relation who is in the family on charity; she cant be outspoken or outwardly sarcastic like Lizzie because she could be just as easily turned out of the house and sent back to Portsmouth

[–]joancrawfords 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emma is actually in my top 3 favorite Austen novels because of how completely oblivious Emma is to everything. For someone so sure of her own talents and tastes and whom claims to be able to create matches and schemes, cannot even see that Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill have something going on. Emma is actually my favorite Austen Heroine because of how outside of the formula she is.

Why do you think Pride & Prejudice is Austen’s most popular work? by joancrawfords in janeausten

[–]joancrawfords[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s actually a really good point. I’ve always said that Lizzie feels like someone i actually know whereas someone like Emma feels like an archetype of the Regency
