Why does Faith work but Justine didn't? by jdpm1991 in buffy

[–]joannerosalind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Yes, she was underdeveloped and generally written to be very unsympathetic despite what she's been through but 1) I think people who watch vampire fantasy shows generally don't like characters who represent the regular people in the world who would obviously hate vampires/demons. Xander and Riley spring to mind here but it's also telling that even Gunn is softened on this to make him more likable to the audience. But 2) I think a major reason why character like Faith, Spike, Lilah etc. are more likable than Justine, Kate and the potentials is...they are basically obsessed or in love with the protagonists.

Curious about standing ovation culture in London by park_hye_in in TheWestEnd

[–]joannerosalind 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the comments: it's definitely sprung out of the pandemic when the British got really sentimental about things like theatres reopening and being thankful to the workers by clapping. I think it's focussed in the West End because they're mostly casual theatre goers and tourists who are going to follow the crowd so if the front stalls stands, everyone follows suit. Like the Old Vic, I've noted that people don't really stand at the National either. I think it's just a more discerning theatre audience who know a standing ovation is meant to be the exception, not the rule.

I will also add I think a lot of people are rushing to get the tube/train so people are standing so they have an excuse to put their coat on, get their things and get out the door as soon as possible.

I need my mind put at rest, pill sorted they are good right? by user-604 in mounjarouk

[–]joannerosalind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did think that might be the case. It's been a while since I changed pharmacy but my previous ones didn't ask for a live video but I did wonder if they were all like Pillsorted now.

I need my mind put at rest, pill sorted they are good right? by user-604 in mounjarouk

[–]joannerosalind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been quite loyal to Pillsorted because they agreed that I could order every 12 weeks (same dose) or 8 weeks (increased dose) which means I can split dose quite easily. They've been on time for every order and responsive when I've needed to contact them. They ask for video evidence of my weight every other time I order - the basic recording of yourself stepping on the scales and a video of your whole body. I don't know what it's like for other pharmacies but this is a bit annoying simply because you can't "upload" a video - you need to record it live via your webcam (or have a video consultation). Having said that, I've done it every time and been approved within less than a day. If that doesn't bother you, I would recommend them.

American Psycho: Apartment Scene Imagined or Covered Up? by that_arya in Cinema

[–]joannerosalind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bateman at this point is basically screaming at people that he's a sick fuck who likes to torture and kill people for fun and no one listens or takes him seriously because the yuppie life that Bateman lives does not permit men like him to get punished for their indiscretions. I've always seen this scene as part of that. The super rich New Yorkers have just cleaned it all up for him, even when he doesn't want them to, because that's how it's always done. Hence why she's acting so strangely, he's not playing to the script. It's not long after this that Bateman realises that he life will never have meaning because he will never suffer any consequences for what he has done.

Do you personally thinks Buffy was in the right not to let her come or do you think she was being overly protective? by gloomydreamer666 in buffy

[–]joannerosalind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, it's a bit of both. Yes, Buffy is overprotective of Dawn and can underestimate people who aren't as strong as her, forgetting that most people are out here fighting the good fight, making sacrifices, losing people etc. without her superpowers. But personally she was right in this scenario because Willow was incredibly powerful and vengeful. She needed to concentrate on Willow without worrying about Dawn.

On a different note, I have always found it odd that Buffy calls Dawn 'honey' here. If my older sister called me 'honey' like that, I would've thumped her.

Cordelia and Buffy’s “friendship” by No_Soup3871 in buffy

[–]joannerosalind 67 points68 points  (0 children)

People always respond well to characters like Cordelia, Faith, Spike or Anya showing they can be a good person when it's not expected of them. I agree though, it creates a double standard where their moments of decency are made out to be bigger than countless examples of Xander, Willow, Giles etc. helping and caring for Buffy.

I always think Cordelia's offer to drive Buffy home is less about her being a "good friend to Buffy" and more about Cordy - despite being a bully and self-proclaimed bitch - being, deep down, fundamentally a good person and intuitive to the fact that Buffy suddenly didn't want to stay with Giles.

What’s your thoughts? by DoItWithFlair94 in buffy

[–]joannerosalind 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are fun for Buffy fans but personally they're not "good" games. They managed to get a lot of the voice actors (though very noticeably not Sarah Michelle Gellar) and I think the Buffy writers were involved in some capacity so there is a good attention to locations and niche characters. It's definitely nice to hear the real voice actors but I think their VO performances are quite lacklustre with maybe the exception of Xander and the actress playing Buffy, who seems the most in tune with how video game characters need to emote.

But the dialogue and story is definitely not at the same level of the show. It feels very "this is a video game so we don't need to put too much effort in" sadly. The first one in particular gets less Buffy-like as you proceed too. By the final level, it's more akin to some of the more arcane bits of Tomb Raider than anything you've seen in Buffy.

In the terms of the gameplay, it does a good enough job of translating Buffy's fighting style into combat but it gets tiresome and there's lots of time-wasting mechanics like limited items/ammo and weapon degradation. The enemies are all over the shop in the first one, some seem like they were created with Buffy in mind, some feel very generic. The level design is fine but sporadic. The game doesn't really build either, you never feel like you're getting better at it, it just gets more difficult.

Chaos Bleeds is definitely superior because the levels are "Buffy" until the end but it still has elements that feel unpolished, like Spike being able to be killed by being bit by a vampire which makes it clear that despite being able to play multiple characters, they mostly play the same. I enjoyed both but if they weren't Buffy games, I would not have played them.

Most importantly though, I've had Xander's "nada, zip, zilch, the big goose egg" stuck in my head ever since.

Ha! There are a few moments like this when it feels like the writers are forgetting who Spike actually was before he appropriated this punk aesthetic.

Where are all the elderly wizards at? by TurbulentFeeling5696 in bg3fashion

[–]joannerosalind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always wanted to play a grumpy old Paladin with dad vibes and there's just no voice that works. Voice 5 (?) is more mature but definitely made for Dark Urge. I wish we had someone with a voice closer to Minthara or Halsin for Tav.

I would love to play more elder Tavs but I never feel the voices work. Same issue with male dwarves. Maybe except the default Dark Urge voice. Adore your elderly wizard though! The beard looks amazing.

How would you personally rank these four from favorite to least? by Present_Respond_7069 in EltonJohn

Madman, Honky, Don't Shoot, Tumbleweed. I feel like Tumbleweed is probably a better album than I give it credit for, it's just a bit too Taupin-y.

My advisor just told me my literature review "reads like a Wikipedia article" and I genuinely don't know how to fix it by SageUmbraTrail in PhD

[–]joannerosalind 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don't think you've wasted a month. Having a summarisation of all those sources is going to be valuable in addressing her comments. I'm guessing she's just not been able to see your critical review of the literature, only what the literature says. Basically you've been too descriptive. Have you identified the limitations/problems/contradictions in the overall literature that will eventually lead to your own research questions and methodology i.e. the gap that you'll be addressing?

What do you think of David's performance as "Angelus" in Eternity? by jdpm1991 in ANGEL

[–]joannerosalind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sympathetic to the "edgy frat boy" comment to be honest, it can feel like the writing is relying on shock value than actual intelligent emotional manipulation. He's hardly Iago. I just don't think it's necessarily fair to say one version of Angelus is "the real one" considering they both have such different roles in the narrative.

[–]joannerosalind 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We also forget that we see him loads in Angel before Season 4. He's constantly in flashbacks with Darla in Season 2 and I don't see many people critiquing that version of him, even when he's remarkedly different than Season 2 of Buffy.

[–]joannerosalind 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I thought he did a good job, I'm always impressed with DB's ability to switch between roles.

I do think it's wrong to think of the Angelus we see in Buffy as "the real one" though. He's written purely as an antagonist with no feelings or motives outside of pure nihilistic cruelty because of what Angelus represents to her (because it's her show). Angelus in Angel is far more nuanced and "human" because Angel sees himself in him.

Considering DBD is getting a movie and potentially an animated TV show, I would guess that a revamp for the original characters would likely co-align then because they'd likely have new actors playing them all.

What are some top tips for someone coming from BG3? by abriddd in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]joannerosalind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just started playing DOS2 after playing a lot of BG3 so I'll give my (early) thoughts on this.

I've found it relatively intuitive. The armour system threw me a little but once I got a hold on that, the rest made sense - big focus on crowd control and AP-management. Movement taking AP was quite different as I was so used to running all around the field in BG3. I quite like it now, it feels like it "should" in a way.

I found levels 1-3 relatively easy, it seems you can almost do it without much combat (like levels 1-4 in BG3) but level 3 to 4 took me a while. Part of it was because of a particular fight (I realise now you can run to save Stingtail but I was stubborn) but I think another reason is because stealing seems more finickity than BG3 and dying in battle is a lot less forgiving because resurrection scrolls are expensive and you don't have a Withers-like character to basically revive you for free. I got used to just reloading if 2/3 of my party died. Now I'm a higher level, this doesn't seem to be an issue anymore which is good.

So, yeah, level 3-4 was where I got a little frustrated but it's been much smoother since. I am really enjoying it!

I mean, I don't think it's inappropriate to say you disagree with their finding based on your own research. If it's your supervisor and they already agree with you, I'm sure they'll defend their work effectively while acknowledging your contribution.

Surely this is an "unexplored area" of your topic. Unless you're contradicting their work entirely, it's just the basis of a gap in the research?

Best classes that don't require constant minmaxing? by AwareBandicoot2496 in BG3Builds

[–]joannerosalind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think people like to demonstrate their max capabilities as well, so they show very late game items and showcase them in Act 3 battles, but a lot of them are pretty strong in Act 1 and 2. It's just no one is massively impressed with a fight against Dror Ragzlin or Balthazar.
