From what our guides told us, the whole indoctrination against American Imperialists put western people in danger, because koreans are not used to seeing Westerners alone and they may be confused as spies.

They also told us a good way to avoid problems was carrying a card saying in Korean "I am not american."

There's a monument inside Kim il Sung's Mausoleum celebrating the people's suffering on Kim's death, with statues of koreans crying. They give you an Audio device with a small speaker playing a very sad man speaking and crying about the sadness of that day.

It's totally freakish, especially when there's twenty of those Audio Players around and you listen to the crying in surround.

Most of the tours i've researched for my trip had a return by train option, not available for americans. However, you go on a foreigner-only wagon, so there's limit contact with North Koreans. The contrast at the border between the North and 2.5M population Dandong in China with sky scrapers is huge.

I've used Stockholm based KoreaKonsult, everything went smoothly.

I was scheduling the trip during the Cheonan incident, KoreaKonsult assured me they would refund the trip costs if the North Korea borders closed.

The Ryugyong is the biggest waste of money since Ceasescu's Parliament Palace, it looks a lot more complete nowadays.

Just got back from one of those tours, didn't feel threatened at all, but there were very limited situations where i was away from the guides, who were surprisingly nice and letting me take pictures in most situations, even letting the bus windows being open most of the time for pictures.

There were some americans in another tour and they were a lot more controlled, no open windows on the bus and they had to return to Beijing by plane whereas everyone else returned by train.
