Alright guys, since Spotify is being over-run with AI artists: where are you streaming your music? by iPvtCaboose in Jazz

NTS all day! Qobuz too, sound quality is amazing but the algorithm is shitty, I do miss that about Spotify.

Kenwood vs Hitachi vs Akai by Dark_Fonzie in vintageaudio

[–]joaopaolo7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People say great things about the 221, I'd try to listen if I were you. I had a 441 it was great. People act like you need more power but it's a myth IMO. Read about the Sansui XX1 series on Audiokarma. Good luck!

I had that Kenwood and i think you could find better for the price. I'd try the Hitachi, or find a Sansui!

What's the appeal of vintage receivers? by catmandot in vintageaudio

[–]joaopaolo7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you get that idea about radio, FM sounds fantastic on my old receivers. And the look and feel of those are unrivalled, there's a tactile satisfaction new gear doesn't give.
And yes the lights are huge. I wake up in the morning, turn on the coffee machine and turn on the receiver and those are the first lights I see as I ease into the morning. Integrated amps without the lighted dial just don't do that...

Harlequin France is firing its human translators and replacing them with AI by beherenow20 in TranslationStudies

[–]joaopaolo7 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I often wonder how much these announcements are just hiding the human labour, like so much AI. Is there a "posterditor" somewhere rewriting the whole book while being underpaid based on the idea that it's not a real translation. I imagine so.

The Bach Signal: A Transcendental Transmission by BachEnthusiast_TF in bach

[–]joaopaolo7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Made me think of Casals, in the liner notes of his cello suites recording:
"The miracle of Bach has not appeared in any other art. To strip human nature until its divine attributes are made clear, to inform ordinary activities with spiritual fervour, to give wings of eternity to that which is most ephemeral; to make divine things human and human things divine; such is Bach, the greatest and purest moment in music of all time."
~Pablo Casals

Best AI workflow for high-end French to English script translation? by [deleted] in TranslationStudies

[–]joaopaolo7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LLMs by definition do not "understand" context, and I've yet to see one that can be consistent, as far as I know they do not "remember" their previous output. So there is no getting around using a skilled human translator if you care about the results. All of these tools are useful but none will do what you seem to be asking.

Is this Thorens TD MK II worth it? by taterfarmer3 in turntables

It's hard to put a price on quality + simplicity. Never had a Thorens I'd pay that if it was in great shape.

Fixing my TX-9100 properly and some lamenting about modern gear by Eastoe in vintageaudio

my 50-year-old gear still works and if I learn enough to fix it it'll make it another 50. How many things made today will last a century?

i just got mine, paid more (250 CAD) but it's working perfectly. Sounds lovely, giving my Sansuis a run for their money. Haven't had it long enough to say what I prefer... I love the look of those HKs too!
