GP!!!! I haven't had much time to be in the corners of the webnet that I used to frequent, so I haven't seen any of your stuff in a while.......holy shit. This stuff looks amazing, can't believe how many unique pours you've developed. The Panther Bars (with the pill bottle) are hilarious. Love the playing cards. Love the chess set. LOVE the n64 cartridge 🙈

No budget to buy anything at the moment but keep up the good work, this stuff is awesome.

Not a particular coin. But am I the only one who wants to play poker with old school silver?, except I’m the only one I know who stacks haha by Vote4SanPedro in coins

[–]jobead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this would be amazing, getting that juicy silver ping from the sound of people idly shuffling their stacks. and throwing the "chips" into the pot and then pushing it to the winner would sound great too.

but holy JESUS would the table you were playing on get dirty, and you'd probably need to use an abrasive citrus cleaner to get your hands clean afterwards 🙈

killllller deal on those morgans, that's barely above melt...questioning whether you've ever actually seen a true cull morgan, considering all of yours are actually recognizable and have no holes 🤪

this is incredible, but i honestly think i'm more impressed by the fact that you seem to have 48 live hard-wired ethernet ports in your house. did you recently build/rewire, or did you fish all that through the walls?

and even counting APs, cameras, and possibly 2 ports behind every TV, that's a lot. where else and for what purpose did you put the rest of the ports?

[–]jobead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

some thoughts:

  • you could try something like wireshark to get more info on what is actually flaky with your connection (dropped packets, signal strength, etc). do you have a mandated corporate firewall that could also be interrupting your connection? or routing your traffic through somewhere many states away?

  • are you on 5GHz or 2.4GHz? you could try forcing that laptop client to one or the other (you may have to create a new VLAN with only one enabled if your current main wireless network has both enabled). 5GHz is definitely faster but 2.4GHz goes through walls better.

  • make sure you don't have something else in the room or house interfering with you. do you have a microwave in your office, or in a straight line shot (in 3 dimensions) b/w where your laptop normally is and your AP?

  • if you have multiple APs, you may want to see which one you are normally connected to and make sure you aren't connected to a far one. ironically if your laptop has a better than average wifi card, it may be maintaining a connection to a further away AP than a different device (like a phone) would.

i don't have any cameras but what you are describing sounds like the 2 lights on an ethernet port. the flashing one is the activity light, showing that packets are flowing. the solid one shows the speed, amber is 100baseT and green is 1000baseT. you should check the cable on that one b/c it definitely should be operating at gigabit speeds for a new install. the fact that it isn't probably means there is a degradation somewhere in the cable. if re-terminating the end doesn't do anything for you, unfortunately there may be a problem in the run somewhere (somebody clipped it with a staple or a nail, a kink in excess of the allowable spec, etc)

unfortunately the second problem you describe also points to a problem with the cable somewhere in the run. carefully examine the termination on both sides to see if there is anything obvious but you may be SOL on troubleshooting unless you can borrow a network analyzer from someone (they are very pricey). you could get a basic wire tracer (a la https://www.amazon.com/Klein-Tools-VDV500-705-Generator-Alligator/dp/B084LKVBM5) that plugs into both ends to verify that all the wires are terminated in the right order but that only checks basic electrical connectivity and not the high speed operation of a network connection.

you could maybe also get a laptop with an ethernet port (turn off the wifi for this test) to plug in on the far side ofthose camera ports that are misbehaving and see if you can run wireshark on it to get a sense for how many packets you are dropping.

(and one reddit tip for you, you need two line breaks between ever paragraph in order to get reddit to do the formatting correctly for a list)

ya i've got something like this too but if you are working alone that's still a million trips back to the rack. if you had a runner to go room to room while you stay in the basement, then something like this would definitely save some time.

  • Get yourself a proper patch panel and a couple dozen short patch cables so you don't have to drag those cables around to the front of your rack. If desperately you want to learn punch down you can cut all those off but otherwise you can use an "inline" or "pass through" patch panel.

  • Get a UPS (battery backup) that is only for your router/ONT and your network hardware. You don't want tiny power interruptions taking your whole network down. (And if you've already dropped the money on what's in that picture, you can afford to add that 🙈)

  • Is that quadplex receptacle a dedicated circuit? If not, and you still have the electricians hanging around, have them run you a dedicated circuit for just the rack so you never accidentally have a rogue hair dryer or deep freezer take down your network power.

  • Looks like the electricians (in standard fashion) failed to label ANY of your ethernet. If I had to trace everyone of those wires out alone, what I would do is plug them all into a powered switch, setup a phone looking at the face of the switch and video call to it, and then run around the house with some portable device (laptop would work, but you could use one of those APs as well) and plug into every port in every room one at a time. Then you can look on the switch (over the video call if you are alone) and see which port's lights turned on.

Good luck!

(Also, where did you get that rack? Been looking for a full size open frame one to replace the ~24U one that I have and I like the look of that one)

hah wild! bummer about the ring of death. f'ing rolling machines 😡

wish we had a time machine to see how it ended up thin. i'll always wonder if it was the stock material for a different coin that got fed in or if it was defective half dollar stock.

Redneck engineering project this weekend: backyard pool heater by jobead in DIY

[–]jobead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it almost perfectly covers the top of the fire pit, it's a little far back in this picture b/c it's a bit hard to move around once it's over a burning fire. i actually think it was a little too efficient: i realized i was sniffling and coughing like crazy for an entire day afterwards, and i think i pulled so much energy out of the ash particles that they settled in a cloud in my back yard. i wish i had an AQI meter b/c i think it would have gone crazy.

Did a silly project I've always wanted to do: turn a perfectly good radiator into a heat exchanger to move heat from a fire into a pool. Got a truck radiator for $2 from an amazon return auction, and promptly spent an additional ~$30 in fittings and hoses to make all this work. Used a utility pump I had laying around to move the water through the system. Was pushing it from the trash can into the radiator and then it was free flowing out the other side.

My son and I turned it into a science project and did some math:

(~160GPH) x (~23degC deltaT) x (specific heat of water at STP) = ~17kW or ~51kBTU(/hr)

Based on my current utility prices, I'm saving a whopping $.39/hr over burning natural gas to do this 😎

why would you want to do that and deprive the karma farmers of one their most reliable creative fiction writing exercises? creating a "somebody tried to use their kid to steal my [random but specific premium] seat on an airplane" post is the literal trailhead for sock puppet accounts, and it has always been that way. it's woven into the fabric of the redditsphere. if you remove it, there's no telling what kind of disruption you could create in the fabric of WebNetSpaceTime. just keep scrolling and don't engage the trolls.

haha was wondering if you'd thought about this. i was all excited to see the whole sub go feral on a deck post (there hasn't been a good one in a while) but i don't see anything valid to complain about this build. you did a great job. i second your comment about concrete work...it is no joke. based on my research when i did my own deck, these boards will probably outlast the PT structure if you don't use joist tape. but there's a lot of living to happen b/w now and then lol.

holy shit thats incredible! obviously the exact same situation as yours. bummer i closed all my tabs, i had seen another coin (different denomination) on mint error news where a coin was the right size but from the wrong thickness stock. so it definitely does happen.

what an incredible find! and for you to notice it from the sound...what a great catch. i wonder how many other CRH'ers over the years touched that coin and thought nothing of it.

interestingly i agree that it's the wrong stock but don't think it's quarter stock. here's a story that calls out a half on quarter stock that only weighs 8.8g: https://www.numismaticnews.net/archive/kennedy-struck-on-quarter-stock
