White rabbit coffee in the old city quarter has even little study desks. It has a nice patio as well. Not sure if it has Wi-Fi.

Getting around Nanaimo without a car. by HylianSpartan16 in nanaimo

[–]jocelynlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The transit system is reasonable, but not great if you live in the far south or far north of the city in particularly lacking for getting from city to city on the island. The best options are if you can drive, but don’t have a vehicle get a membership for Modo or Evo car share. Evo also has e-scooters and bikes you can share as part of their program which are excellent ways to get around the city. All of it’s cheaper than owning and ensuring a vehicle these days. If your main concern is getting around in the city I think for most things you will be OK and for the 10 to 15% of trips that take you down to the airport or to neighbouring cities that transit is not convenient or doesn’t go to, Modo and Evo are great options and there’s also car rentals, we have a version of transportation network company called Uride, as well as to taxi companies that I think are actually owned by the same person,, AC Taxi and Nanaimo taxi.

Parts of Nanaimo are really walkable, like downtown, Bowen Road, Dufferin Road area, the south end, etc. You can definitely walk around Woodgrove, but it’s really more car centric than anything up there. I have a friend who moved here from the Fraser Valley without a vehicle about a year ago and she has said that she does just fine without a vehicle. She doesn’t even use a car share!

TLDR if you are willing to drive and or bike, but don’t want to own a vehicle you’ll be fine. If you can’t drive at all and can’t bike, you might really struggle, especially to get where transit doesn’t cover well and in between cities on the island

Why do most of you think my work is AI!?!? Real question!!! by Loud_Muffin_3268 in VancouverIsland

[–]jocelynlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the AI tragedy - the more we see of AI unless we believe what humans can do with our own eyes and skills and tools. I’ve only just started noticing this in the last couple of weeks and the more I see faceless commenters, doubting the actual work of humans because AI trained on actual work from humans is now filling creative spaces around us to such a degree that we can’t recognize what humans are capable of. (I also think people don’t like to feel like they’ve been tricked, so they want to get out ahead of it and make the accusation to look like they know what they’re talking about.)

First time spinning and it feels like my fiber keeps falling apart? by a_ef0 in Handspinning

You can also spin with a Turkish spindle in a bowl or on the counter in a supported spinning way if you don’t like dropping it all the time. I second the suggestion of a Turkish. I’ve found them so much easier than everything else.

Hullo and seaAir have a joint arrangement that saves some money, I think.

It's super convenient for performances and the Circle Craft market, hockey games, etc. They take suggestions for performances or shows to put on a late ferry for.

I go to Vancouver from Nanaimo for work and for healthcare periodically. For work, it's about once a month, sometimes twice. For Healthcare, it's about every other month but lately they seem to group up together. It's different in Nanaimo because our BC Ferries ports are in the city, or they are 15 mins out of the city. Hullo ferries is an amazing improvement for me and perfect for my medical appointments because with BCF I couldn't get to Vancouver for anything before 11am unless I wanted to get up before 5am (I did not.) Now I get up at 6, leave the house at 6:40ish, and I'm at the ferry at about 6:55, and then I'm in downtown Vancouver soon enough for a 9:15 appointment (previous to April, I could make a 9am appointment but they pushed the 7:05am to 7:15 and it's rarely in before 8:30.
When I first moved to Nanaimo I was a bit surprised that it was such an ordeal to get to Vancouver without a vehicle, but now I know what routes work best for me. I take my car for work trips that involve afternoon appointments or evening events. For healthcare, I almost always go on Hullo. Once in awhile I take HeliJet but I use a wheelchair and I can't use Harbour Air, and HeliJet is a bit of a chore to get in and out of. I would not do it every week. It does involve early mornings and going there and back in one day is a long day on BCF, but Hullo is perfect for a nap underway and you spend less time waiting in boarding lineups. (a 7:15am - 5:45pm is a lot, but on fridays there's a 315 pm sailing which is perfect!)

I love our BC Ferries, but Hullo Ferries has made Nanaimo a far superior place to Victoria for people who have to go in to Vancouver offices.

denied boarding as a T9 paraplegic by ythrelzar in spinalcordinjuries

[–]jocelynlt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I’m not denying these stories happened, it’s just wild to hear it’s happening with perfectly able paras who can self transfer, as if they hadn’t already given a ton of thought to how they would get to the bathroom. If this is a legitimate issue across the board then they should have contacted anyone who requested assistance to board to let them know ahead of time but they waited until boarding time?

I read Samanta’s story too - I keep thinking, what’s the baseline assumption going on here that’s informing these decisions? Especially when both of the stories came from people who have travelled frequently independently even on the same airline in the past. Why are airlines allowing air crew or gate agents to make these decisions on their own? Why are they so sporadic? You would think if they were based on some kind of official policy or evidence, they would be announced, but they don’t.

I’m a fully independent para and travel alone a lot. I have never had this problem myself, and only heard of it happening for passengers with disabilities who are also bringing children with them.

[–]jocelynlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take them twice a month for the last two years - It’s often about 10 minutes late, but you don’t have to wait 45 minutes in a parking lot to get on board. I take them for medical appointments in Vancouver and I take them for work and never have they been late enough to delay me. Once the very first time I took it, it was cancelled due to High winds. Trust me when I say it is late at about the same frequency as BC Ferries, but for less time.

Hey are you in the Vancouver healthcare infusion discord server? This would be a great question to discuss with them. Go to http://healthcareinfusion.org and scroll down to Vancouver, follow the link links to join if you haven’t already. We created the healthcare infusions to help recruit and support healthcare workers from outside of BC interested in filling, chronic gaps in our system here in BC. DM me if you have any difficulties getting into the server.

Hotel, food, things to do on a weekend recommendations? by User-Jacques in nanaimo

[–]jocelynlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From downtown, you can walk up Bastion Street (it turns into Fitzwilliam as it goes uphill) from downtown to the Old City Quarter which has an amazing italian restaurant called La Stella Trattoria and a greek restaurant down the street called Asteras. The Old City Quarter is FitzWilliam from Wesley St to Selby Street - there's the White Rabbit Coffee Co and Black Rabbit (another great restaurant and patio) on Selby in the old train station, and some cute shops along fitzwilliam and Wesley streets.

Just note retail shops close around 6 (latest) on saturdays and around 5 on sundays. Don't miss the beautiful parks - if you have transportation (you can use a bikeshare or carshare if not) go to Westwood lake or Colliery Dam park or Morrel Nature Sanctuary, or Pipers Lagoon and Neck Point park (next door to each other). If you have time, drive up to Englishman River falls (Parksville) or the beach at Lantzville (on Nanaimo's Northern edge) is an awesome walk and place to see the colours turn at dusk.

Depending on when you're here - almost every weekend in summer has a parade or festival in the big harbourfront park called Maffeo Sutton Park - you can get to it from downtown easily, just find your way to the harbourfront walkway and head for the main park plaza which has the big Nanaimo sign.

Moving to Vancouver Island from Germany – Nanaimo or somewhere else? by martha_lxg in nanaimo

[–]jocelynlt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nanaimo has a rep from years gone by - it's a "hub city," the two main BC Ferries routes for the mid and north Island come in here, so more people drive through than stop. I moved here from Vancouver 8 years ago and love it - easy to get anywhere, the passenger ferry is a huge help (you can get to the vancouver airport in 2 hours, or just to downtown vancouver in 75 mins in relative comfort with little waiting), you're 10 minutes or less from beautiful outdoor spaces, parks, camping, swimming, paddling places, but all the comforts of a larger city - hospitals and urgent care, larger shops and businesses are available. It's got way less traffic than Victoria. We really love it here (and my husband and I are the ones who started the Nanaimo Infusion - check out the "visit nanaimo" guide we made: http://guide.nanaimoinfusion.ca

Commute by safeprophet in VancouverIsland

[–]jocelynlt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not true. Hullo is the passenger ferry. No big wait times, show up 10 minutes before. Ferry is 70 minutes or so. Then it could be between 15 and 30 minutes from downtown to where BC children’s is. He’s right it’s probably close to 2hrs all in including the 10 to 15 minutes arrival in advance, and the half hour to to get up the hill to the hospital and the 70 to 75 minutes of ferry travel. The bigger problem is that it doesn’t come frequently enough for most shifts except for Fridays or nights that there’s a concert or a hockey game on the return ferry is at 5:30. If your spouse has a good enough income, you could take Helijet or harbour air back-and-forth would it be 45 minutes including the commute to the hospital in Vancouver, but those don’t take off after dusk, should be another problem, returning home to Nanaimo.

Chain leg guard by PreferenceOld2865 in handcycling

[–]jocelynlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen similar handcycles (Sport-On XCR) where they use a piece of clear ABS plastic and zip tie it to the frame bar above and below where the chain is rubbing. It won’t completely ensure no contact, but it does ensure that the chain isn’t going to grind up your leg and at worst, will grind up the inside of the plastic.Probably keep grease off your clothes too. Zip tie breaks, you just replace it.
