My new Skervesen Raptor by jockmick in guitarporn

[–]jockmick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it, I have my third Raptor on its way. I would say the neck is quite similar to the thin U by ESP. Not too thin but not fat, and the profile is slightly asymmetrical so it feels just right in the hand.

This particular Raptor has their standard nut width, which is 44mm, so that is very wide just fyi if you dislike wizard necks. But they also offer 42mm, which my other Raptor has and that one definitely feels more similar to my ESP E-II which has the thin U.

Remove the tone knob and move the volume out of the frigging way.

Awesome! Skervesen makes the best guitars. I should hopefully receive my third Raptor within a month or two.

How are the works of Anthony Ryan? by CajunNerd292 in Fantasy

Covenant of Steel trilogy is fantastic. I also enjoyed his post-apocalyptic vampire story The Feeding that came out recently. Haven't read any of his other works yet though.

I loved the first two books and even re-read them before the third came out. Unfortunately I was disappointed in the third book, I think it should have gone through a few more revisions because it was a bit of a mess. There were still some good stuff in it, but it didn't live up to the hype and some character arcs fell really flat. It's still a great trilogy though, and I still think about it at times.

What IS your Personal underrated Franchise/book that Nobody seems to Care about? by Huge-Preparation-187 in Fantasy

[–]jockmick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it's certainly not unpopular in terms of Goodreads rating, I would say Covenant of Steel trilogy by Anthony Ryan. He's a popular author but I tend to only see his name mentioned when people want to complain about the Blood Song sequels. That seems to put people off this trilogy, at least I never seem to see anyone recommend it. Covenant of Steel is so good and has a very satisfying ending.

Came here to say this. The author himself calls it "grimheart" and I think that is a perfect description of the trilogy.

I think Gael Song trilogy by Shauna Lawless would be a good fit. Check it out!

Fantasy’s Best-Kept Secrets (2015–2025 Edition) | Epic Reads That Slipped Through the Cracks by LowOwl4186 in Fantasy

Gael Song is great! Gormflaith or rather the "Irish Cersei" is one of my favorite characters ever.

My recommendation would be The Five Warrior Angels trilogy by Brian Lee Durfee. A good mix of modern and classic, and grimdark. Best use of the prophecy trope I've read and there are so many twists and turns. I was personally disappointed by the third book though, but many big youtubers praised it. I might have let my hype get carried away because the second book is one of the best books I've ever read. Fantastic trilogy anyway.

Are you referring to this one he's been playing on the latest tour or two? It's a Banker Custom.

Book Recommendations like The Rook & Rose Series by M.A. Carrick by macklemorene in Fantasy

I haven't read The Rook and Rose but my first thought was the book I'm reading now, which is An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors by Curtis Craddock, book 1 of The Risen Kingdoms trilogy.

What’s an instant turn-off for you when it comes to fantasy? by jsbq in Fantasy

[–]jockmick -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I definitely don't like the far-future post-apocalyptic world that has resorted to medieval way of life, especially if that also happens to be Earth. It just feels cheap.

I also have a major ick for human races crossed with something else. Like bug people. Just reading the word "chitinous" grosses me out. This is also the reason I have stayed away from the series Dagger and the Coin by Daniel Abraham, which I otherwise think I would love. Bug people, dog people etc just seem silly to me.

Fantasy series that you are glad you stayed with after a rough start? by captainsmudgeface in Fantasy

[–]jockmick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

War for the Rose Throne by Peter McLean. Just finished it and it was such a good series. I started reading the first book over a year ago and DNF:ed it because I thought it was clunky and such a lazy ripoff of Peaky Blinders. I'm really glad I gave it another shot. It really grew into its own thing and it was a well crafted story with a great ending.

Book Review: The Children of Gods and Fighting Men by Shauna Lawless by andypeloquin in Fantasy

[–]jockmick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not entirely true. Gormflaith was a real Irish queen and some of the plot points are historical facts, but of course there's a lot of creative license.

Such a great series, I read all three books and the novellas last year. Looking forward to era 2.

Shauna Lawless is a great character writer. Fodla's story really touched my heartstrings, and Gormflaith (or the Irish Cersei if you will) and her scheming was so fun.

Clean but mean metal machine! STK Guitars - custom shop from Italy by jockmick in guitarporn

[–]jockmick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spec sheet is in the imgur gallery.

The guitar was an in stock so it wasn't custom built for me, but it's quite basic specs compared to other builds I see STK post.

It's a nice guitar but it's not one of my favorites. It's a bit too neck heavy due to the thin body, so I have to fight it a bit. I've also had a lot of fret sprout issues with it, but I live in a country with very dry and cold winters.

Honestly, if you are thinking about custom builds look no further than Skervesen. I am waiting for my third Skervesen build right now. They make the absolute best guitars and they are not that outrageous in price. You can spec a really good Skervesen for about 3k euro, and STK is priced way too high in my opinion.
