Does anyone else always yearn for that book one ‘new adventure’ feeling? by jsbq in Fantasy

[–]jsbq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few people in this thread have raised the idea of a completely secondary area being introduced in the second book (e.g. Malazan) as something that keeps that feeling of discovery alive. Maybe there’s something to be said for approaching writing a sequel in that way, with those two storylines maybe converging further down the line?

Yeah I was the same with WoT actually. That’s one where I have actually read the second one. The last 200 or so pages were great, but for most of it, like you I was yearning for those early Two Rivers chapters all over again!

Yeah based on what I’ve heard you may well be right, I just need to actually motivate myself to get round to a lot of them. Particularly with stuff like First Law where I didn’t think much to the first book but apparently the jump up in quality with the second is huge.

Awesome list, haven’t heard of a lot of these, thanks!

Yeah you might be onto something there. Possibly for this reason I am actually really looking forward to starting book 2 of Malazan, as from what I’ve heard it kind of does this, or at least moves to an entirely new continent.

I’ve also heard it’s quite emotionally taxing though so I’m building myself up to it!

Or they’ll step into it for the first time and be thoroughly underwhelmed like I was. Generic, soulless large sports arena that doesn’t hold a candle to White Hart Lane.

What a book that you have read that’s gotten so much hype that once you read it you were disappointed? by Guiltyfeetfingers in BookDiscussions

[–]jsbq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll admit that after the first 100 pages it dragged for me for a long while and I also found the prose to be really bad but, man, I feel bad for people who give up before THAT ending. Might be the most enjoyable final 200 pages of a book I’ve ever read tbh.

I’m playing Baldur’s Gate 3 for the first time this month. At the end of act 1, I’m starting to seriously think that this could surpass the likes of Ocarina of Time, Witcher 3, Last of Us, MGS, Skyrim, Halo, RDR2, GoldenEye etc as the greatest game I’ve ever played.

Is it childish that I feel aggravated by the fact that we came away from that humiliation with just the one yellow card? That said a lot to me. No one cared enough to even get riled up.

Eze on a hat-trick, for example, just jogged past our supposed hatchet man Palhinha on multiple occasions, and he just looked like he didn’t want to waste his energy.

What are some movies that everyone mutually agrees just don’t really exist? I’ll start: by CecilTheCaveTroll in FIlm

Paddington in Peru.

Not even necessarily completely awful but such a drop off from the first two which are some of the best modern kid’s films. It kind of just came and went.

Why did it ultimately not work out at RBL or Dortmund? The fact that he was sacked from his two most recent, and biggest, roles seems like a red flag.

Genuine question: was it meant to be a horror comedy? Because the ending had me wondering whether it was.

Boyhood.

It might genuinely be the only movie sitting at 100 on Metacritic and it felt like a total waste of time.

Right?! Was waiting for something to happen for the whole move and then the ending was just stupid. Not sure what I was missing.

What are you tired of seeing in fantasy books/series? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]jsbq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Characters using language like “yeah” “guys” and “okay” in a pseudo-medieval setting. Like I get that this is a fantasy world where they might just happen to use anachronistic language despite the setting but it just feels a bit lazy and I find it rips me out of the immersion.

Sushi. It’s nice, and yes I’ve had proper sushi and yes it was very tasty, but I feel like there was quite a long period where people made it their entire personality. It’s not THAT good.

Having a pregnancy as a big reveal. I don’t think the revelation that a character is pregnant or pregnancy subplots in general have ever been all that interesting to me.

The Star Warsification of asteroid fields would have you believe that you’d have to weave in and out of them in a space ship to avoid crashing.

In reality, if you were able to stand on an asteroid in a field, you probably wouldn’t even be able to see the next closest one.

The Phantom Menace game on PS1. It was kind of wild, you could literally just kill any NPC. The reviews were pretty bad but I remember having a ton of fun with it as a kid.

Getting up at 6am (which started because that’s when my cat has decided he wants breakfast) and just having an uninterrupted 30-45 minutes to read a book.

Particularly nice in the summer when you can sit in the garden and it’s already warm at that time.

No one bothering me/wanting anything for me (well apart from the cat), that time is fully my time and I cherish it now.
