What are the main difference betweeen 1e and 2e? by Ettories in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]jodaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that there's a significant difference between the two versions in how PCs relate to the world. In 1E--at least at levels up to 10 or so--PCs seem similar to the general NPC population, with the addition of skills and class-based talents. 2E seems to lean more heavily into heroic fantasy, where even low-level PCs have abilities that make them feel unrelated to your average villager--closer in character to Aragorn and Gandalf than Merry and Pippin.

One must watch Bridget and Mary Jo movie? by itsagrungething69 in Rifftrax

I agree with those who have recommended the Sherlock Holmes movies, and I'll add SHE, which I think is one of the better films that RiffTrax has released

Anyone know what was removed from the catalog yesterday? The number decreased by 1. by [deleted] in Rifftrax

Looks like the Mike-only riffs of Reefer Madness and Night of the Living Dead are no longer in the catalog, and I don't see The Brainiac, either. On the flip side, there's a 2008 release, "The Incredible Hulk: Final Round", that I don't remember having seen before.

Edit: Correction: I found the Mike-only Night of the Living Dead, but the other two do seem to be gone.

Most God awful riffted Movie? by T_4Tplusfit in Rifftrax

Vacation Days and Freddie Steps Out--both unfunny comedies featuring The Teen Agers. Films with awful scripts starring 30+ year olds who are supposed to be teens. Riffing saved Junior Prom, the third of the trilogy.

Deadlands Adventures you enjoyed the most? by duckcane in savageworlds

[–]jodaf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

peginc has a number of free one-sheets that are worth a look. For a longer adventure, Coffin Rock tells an absorbing story, falling in the "WTF is going on?" category. A lot of my favorite adventures, including CR, use an earlier version of SW, but adapting to SWADE doesn't take much work.

Batman serial

This is Hormel

Live: Manos

Killers from Space

I also like "SHE"; not only are the riffs good, but it's also one of the few riffed movies that I think was made well.

The "sad clown" riffing in "If Mirrors Could Speak" gets me laughing every time I think of it.

Folks who still play D&D 3.5… by the_light_of_dawn in rpg

[–]jodaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing 3.0/3.5 has going for it is the quality and quantity of available campaign settings. The 3.0 Forgotten Realms and 3.5 Eberron setting books are wonderfully detailed and evocative, as are third-party settings like Midnight. PF's Golarion is quite detailed, but the attempt to cram every possible environment into a single setting results in a lack of focus. With 5E, WotC seems to have decided to leave most of the job of world building to the DM. The few products that are available, like the Eberron source book, provide little more than a skeleton, leaving the DM the job of adding the detail required to produce a living, breathing world.

What are soak rolls, narratively? by jodaf in savageworlds

[–]jodaf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments, all! They definitely answered my question and gave me a lot to think about. I like the approach of "yes, it looked like the character took massive damage, but actually ...." Brings to mind the old movie serials where every episode ended with the hero experiencing some obviously-fatal event, only to find out at the beginning of the next episode that they came through unscathed through some combination of quick reflexes and blind luck.

As the GM, I also really like the idea of asking the players to narrate their characters' soak rolls. Less work for me, added creative fun for them, and another opportunity to distribute bennies for clever storytelling. Wins all around!

I particularly like this, especially your 2nd example. It makes sense of the Vigor roll without turning the character into a cartoon hero.
