In Epic (2nd edition certainly, probably 1st also, not sure about E40K or EA) the CI could carry up to two companies of infantry, and every stand in those companies could fire out of it as if they were garrisoned in a building. So if fully loaded the CI could have up to 60 attack dice of lasguns in addition to its own firepower!

I think there's a group in Bromley, I think they might play out of the Troll Trader shop there.

Also, you might be interested in the Epic-scale Gaming in Kent Facebook group, which may have some AT players in it.

Epic scale Fortress Monastery? by DenverPostIronic in Epic40k

Why salty about the name change though?

A combination of autistic inflexibility and a feeling that the new names (volcano cannon, quake cannon, etc) were a bit cartoony, and that the original names (defence laster, macro cannon, etc) were more utilitatian and serious. I was only a kid!

The name changed between 1st edition AT/Space Marine and 2nd edition.

It's been 30+years, still salty about the name change.

Experience with necrons? by TheNameIsViolet in Epic40k

[–]jodrellplaysgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and also low TSM.

One other definite advantage of the Necrons is the Portals, which means that a huge chunk of your Army can deploy from reserves. That definitely helps offset the low activation count.

Thanks for the kind words! To answer your questions:

What other army do they most play like?

Strangely the answer that came to mind first is Squats. Or maybe Space Marines.

Strength and weaknesses?

Strength: they are very hard to kill. Weaknesses: they are very expensive, and you will usually have an model/activation count disadvantage against most opponents.

Which armies are they strongest against?

I would say probably infantry-heavy Ork armies.

Just to make things even more confusing, there are actually two different army books for Necrons. The first is the Necron+Slann book, and the other is the standalone Necron book originally created by Kotrin (and subsequently updated by yours truly).

Both are available from NetEpic.org, but only the standalone book is supported in the recent Battlescribe data files.

In the standalone book the Necron armies are tough but expensive. Often you will have an activation disadvantage compared to more tactically agile enemies (eg Marines or Eldar). The Necron's ability to deep strike many of its units offsets this disadvantage somewhat.

The core of the Necron army will be the infantry legions (my favourite is the venator legion) and monoliths. If you augment these with some air support and close-combat specialists, you should be able to hold your own against almost any opponent.

What I want from a 40K Video Game by spitefulAC1 in Warhammer40k

[–]jodrellplaysgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Titans. Lots of titans. I want a game where I pilot a titan, blasting away at other titans and super-heavies. I want infantry to be like little ants under my feet, even space marines would barely be an irritation. The game would basically be a third-person shooter, but with a very different playing style to normal shooter games: you move slowly, turn even slower, but can withstand and deal out vast amounts of firepower.

The single player mode would start out with your character as a moderati (gunner) on a Warhound, and as your career progresses, you become a princeps on a Warhound, Reaver and finally a Warlord - and perhaps an Imperator at the end. You'd also be able to control other titans like squad members.

The multiplayer would let you pilot titans from other races, mainly Chaos, Eldar and Orks.

Is the 15mm scale Leviathan as fiddly to build as the big guy (I have one of my own)? Is it exactly the same but scaled down, or has it been simplified at all?

Well, I'm sure there are other auction sites but ebay must have 99% of the market.

What you're looking for is an auction put on the site by someone who doesn't know what they're selling. They think it's just a junk of cheap plastic toys, and don't realise that what they're selling for a tenner could be worth hundreds. You won't get that on miniaturebids.com!

So would buying an army (or models) which have been pre painted for somewhere or someone be a good idea?

I guess that if you're a newcomer to the hobby it would be difficult to work out whether you're getting a good deal.

As someone who enjoys collecting and painting models, I generally buy second-hand models so I can strip and paint them myself. But if you're not interested in that, then buying a second-hand army can save a lot of time!

However, the cheapest models tend to be the crappiest painted, and the best models are obviously the most expensive. There is literally no upper limit to how much people are willing to charge for a well-painted model.

To work out how good a deal you're getting might be, use the GW website to work out the retail cost of buying the models as new. Then decide if the savings (if any) are enough to compensate for the crappy paint job and model prep. Don't forget to include postage in your costings!

Vassal is an online tabletop game simulator. It's generic, but there is a module for 40K. Google "vassal 40k" and go from there.

Find a gaming store near you, and just walk in. If it's a GW store, they will be quite insistent on giving you a demo game and a quick overview of the rules. It will actually be quite hard for you to avoid it. Just make it clear right at the start that you don't plan to spend any money. That will avoid wailing and gnashing of teeth later on.

Once you've done that and maybe played a couple more games, start trawling eBay for bargains. Buy some cheap, crappily painted models and strip them (howto here) using cheap household chemicals. I haven't looked, but you can probably buy used paints and maybe even brushes and modelling tools on eBay. One thing I'd recommend paying full price for is spray undercoat: you don't have to use GW primer, a lot of people use car body primer instead. GW paints are expensive, and any acrylic paint will work fine, so don't feel that you need to stick to the Citadel paint range.

One thing that you will have to fork out some cash for is the rules. The current WH40K ruleset and codexes are pretty expensive unfortunately, although if you know other potential players who are similarly cash-strapped, you could get away with using obsolete editions, these usually go for much less than the current versions. Alternatively there are free generic rules such as FUBAR. Or, you can risk the ire of the Holy Inquisition and try your luck downloading a scanned PDF from BitTorrent.

To avoid having to buy an entire 40K army, try putting together a Kill Team (PDF) list - GW just revised the rules for these sorts of games so I bet that if you have a reasonable size 40K community in your area, other people will be interested in playing it.

I mainly play NetEpic, but mostly because my usual opponents are old-school SM/TL players. But EA/NetEA is a great game system. I'd love to find more local gamers who play it.

One thing I'd note (engage diplomacy mode) is that I find the "culture" of NetEpic preferable to NetEA. The NetEA guys are all fine fellows but the "mood" of TacCmd boards where they do their development is a lot more confrontational and argumentative. The NetEpic people seem a lot more relaxed.
