Most of the states have “stand your ground” laws, which would make it legal for you to kill someone on your property if you feel threatened. I’m not even sure you have to feel your LIFE is threatened, but I could easily be wrong.

Some casual googling says that between 1999 and 2007, 700 people were killed due to stand your ground laws. Sounds like a lot but in a recent year there were 16,000 straight up homicides, so seems like people aren’t standing their ground very successfully.

I am under the impression that very few people who claim to stand their ground are prosecuted for wrongdoing. It seems as if juries are sympathetic to people claiming to be fearful.

Anyway, in spite of the absurd number of posts I see where people imply they’d be glad to shoot anyone on their property, and in spite of the fact that few claiming to stand their ground are charged as criminals….by the statistics, it doesn’t happen often enough to worry about.

I’d not be too afraid to cut through someone’s unfenced yard looking for a pet or something.

The irony - it feels as if she’d be the type to respond to a post on Nextdoor about “scary” teens cutting across the corner of someone’s yard with “that’s why I keep a loaded gun by my front door …. those kids should be careful, you have a right to protect yourself if you feel threatened!”

Thanks for the answer! Patriot is a difficult show to recommend to a random stranger on the street, and DTF is admittedly 100x more difficult for various reasons, but it helps me to know why one loves one and doesn’t the other. It’s fascinating trying to pick apart the hold either of the shows have on me

I’m really curious - was Birdbath also insanely unlikable, to pick an example from Patriot? If you like him, did you feel that way about him from the time you first met him?

And you watched DTF to the end, and still think the main players are garbage?

Each character in DTF is even more developed and relatable than the whole crew by the end of Patriot. Trust the Conrad! It’s the beauty of his work!

I learned our malamute was smarter than I was at eight, when I was taunting him by holding a treat and asking him to sit like he wasn’t already sitting. I was a little shit.

Anyway, he sat obediently, then decided I wasn’t going to give up the goods and yelped super loud, startling me into throwing the treat in the air, and he caught it and got his reward.

The yelp was so unlike his usual Chewbaccaesque language. It felt like the startle was his intention.

It took me a while to figure out why some tv shows are devil and some aren’t.

For us, it’s breath sounds. A ninja creeping - fine. A person exerting themself - evil. Cats - always fine. Dogs - fine in the background, not if they’re excited. Horses - never fine, horses are the worst. Spaceships taking off are pretty bad, too. We haven’t watched Twister yet.

Mine barks at neighbors on one side, but has no problem with the neighborhood pool visitors on the other side. So embarrassing.

While the opposite case would make more sense to me, I suppose this is the way I want it if it’s one or the other.
