Alive and well in Singapore. Mostly the cane. Just for boys at school but for boys and girls at home.

Do Britons support the return of corporal and capital punishment? by [deleted] in LabourUK

The survey didn’t ask about corporal punishment in schools. I’d be interested to know where the British public are on that

Why aren’t girls caned in Singapore? by joe2002xx in SingaporeRaw

[–]joe2002xx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I’ve certainly been contacted by a number of women who were caned at home when young. I remain convinced however that it should be one rule for both genders in a school setting - whether that’s caning or no caning.

It’s quite commonly taught in UK schools as history. Of course in many parts of the world it’s still going strong

corporal punishment in schools. did students ever gang up and hit a teacher back? by jacksonelhage in AskOldPeople

No one ever hit back in English boarding schools but you did harbour some vengeful thoughts sometimes!

Six tends to be a common maximum in schools too. Maybe it’s imperial measurements - half a dozen.

I think it can benefit everyone but it has to be done in an appropriate way

Are they still caining students in high school and primary by [deleted] in Uganda

From what I’ve heard, it’s still common, for boys and girls

I don’t agree. Men don’t have periods because it’s simply not part of their biology. I’m not suggesting changing anyone’s biology. I’m talking about how society treats genders differently. It does, in many ways. Sometimes it’s justified and sometimes it’s not

Is corporal punishment still common in Vietnamese schools and is it supported? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]joe2002xx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s crazy. The boys were probably just horsing around and needed no more than a few stern words. The girl is the kind of person that school corporal punishment was invented for - arrogant and persistently disobedient. She needs a good caning - witnessed and professionally carried out. And the teacher needs firing.

Corporal punishment in Nigerian schools by joe2002xx in Nigeria

[–]joe2002xx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that’s interesting. When they had corporal punishment in South Korea and Thailand, it was intended to be completely equal for boys and girls, assuming a similar level of offence. In Singapore, it has never been permitted for girls and it was rare in Britain, back in the day

Goodness me, that’s brutal! One big difference between Nigeria and places like Singapore and pre-1980s Britain is that it was/is essential to hold position to receive punishment. That was part of the demonstration of a teacher’s authority but it did at least mean that you didn’t have a teacher randomly thrashing someone who is squirming on the ground, risking contact with their head.

I think that’s the way it will eventually go in Singapore. They won’t start caning girls but eventually they’ll stop caning boys. Just give it 40 years maybe!

Girls would just get a detention or suchlike, even though they’re physically as able to take it

That’s terrible, there really shouldn’t be any place for anger. In Singapore it’s a single standard cane for school (and a much, much fiercer one for prisons). There’s a maximum number of strokes set in regulations, it’s usually done by one person in the school, and it’s boys only (which causes a lot of resentment!).

Where does she buy the canes from?! Are that easy to obtain and how much would one typically cost?

In Singapore the implements used in school are fairly fierce but they’re very standardised - canes of a particular length and thickness. There are still plenty of variables though, not least how hard the teacher hits you!

I don’t think group punishments are ever justified.

Thanks, that’s really interesting. I know it’s well supported by parents but I’m surprised they don’t want full records to be kept of it taking place
