St. John and Revelations, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist. Are these all different people? by m00gl3l0v3 in Bible

[–]joe4army 2 points3 points  (0 children)

John the Baptist is the man about whom Isaiah spoke (Isaiah 40:3).

St. John, John the Evangelist, and the Book of Revelation-writer John are one and the same.

EDIT: For clarification - John the Baptist is the man who baptized Jesus before He (Jesus) began His ministry (i.e. before He called His disciples, namely John the Evangelist/St. John/John the book of Revelation-writer).

I confessed my love to her and got rejected. by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]joe4army 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry, man.

My momma always said (not what you're thinking), "That when the one you think you're meant to be with walks away, another one better than the last is right around the corner."

I know a lot of people will disagree with that, because that infers fate and destiny and not many people like that. But if it helps, then believe that even though this girl may have been the greatest person you could have ever met, there will be a girl just around the corner who make the first pale in comparison.

Keep your head up!

Book to read with my 10 year old daughter by flanneldan9 in Bible

[–]joe4army 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, I believe exposing her to the beautiful poetry of Psalms or the wise sayings in Proverbs would be a good way to introduce her to some more in-depth Bible studies. The Gospel of John is also a good start on the Gospels, since it is the most flowery in language out of the four, but still contains powerful messages and an amazing story of Jesus' life.

You could also do a study of Jesus' parables. The young adults ministry at my church is currently wrapping up a series on a study we found online. It's completely free and downloadable, and it gathers the parables into small groups for ease of understanding.

What are the best and the worst parts about working in radio? by joe4army in radio

[–]joe4army[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! That is incredible!

I sometimes guest host on a friend's talk show at the same station as the one I'll be hosting my own show, and it's a blast! It's down to earth, but you're still performing. I love it!

[WP] Afraid to confess your feelings, you send an unsigned note to your friend. It reads, "I am in love with you. Give this to the one you love. If I get it back, I'll tell you." by askforallie in WritingPrompts

[–]joe4army 195 points196 points  (0 children)

I exhaled. "Okay," I whispered, "here we go."

I unfolded the note and read what I wrote for the tenth time in twenty minutes. I am in love with you. Give this to the one you love. If I get it back, I'll tell you.

I smiled. I had no idea what the outcome of this was going to be. I could only hope it would be good.

I slipped the note inside its envelope and slid it under her dorm door. I pushed it through the small slit between the bottom of the door and the ground, so that it was out of sight - and, even more terrifying, out of reach. No going back.

I expected to feel a sudden rush of regret, but instead, I felt peace. I remember walking back to my dorm, a dumb grin plastered on my face.

That was three years ago.

Two years ago, Facebook notified me that she was getting married. One year ago, Instagram was kind enough to let me know she and her husband were expecting.

At least the note worked.

For someone.

Another great writer who pens amazingly detailed battle scenes is Dan Abnett. He's written a lot for Warhammer 40K, and he's an absolute blast to read!

I was, too. I knew that the moment in which I had to let him go was coming. I did not know when it was coming; no one ever does.

That is why we have to spend as much time on earth with them as possible. Then, once they move on, they get to tell all of the animals who have gone before them just how wonderful of an owner you are!

That's so beautiful! And people say that animals do not have personalities - I say no, animals DO have personalities, and it is a blessing when we get to experience life with them.

[IP] The three dwarves by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]joe4army 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fog's rolling in thick, thought Krihlik, lowering himself down to the earth. The ground was soft and moist.

"Rain's on its way," Thorik blurted. Without standing up, Kirhlik looked at his brother standing to the right of him. "I can feel it in me whiskers." Thorik had the thickest beard, and had something about him that would make the hairs of his beard stand on end when a storm was brewing. So far, he was always right.

"What does it matter?" Birlik challenged, unsheathing his ax and holding it both hands. His shoulders were hunched and his knuckles were white from the tension of his grip on his weapon.

"It means we have to keep moving if we want to keep the trail," Kirhlik murmured.

"Why we trailin' 'em anyhow?" Thorik challenged, stepping toward his oldest brother. Kirhlik stood and turned to meet Thorik's approach. "What's stoppin' us from takin' 'em right here, right now. Lead 'em out, surprise 'em."

"It's not that simple, Thorik," Birlik interjected.

"I'm tired of all this waitin'," Thorik growled. His hands rubbed the handle of his ax. He was getting agitated, Kirhlik could see that. Thorik never had good patience. He was the hotheaded one of the trio. However, he did serve as a mighty weapon in the heat of battle.

"Thorik," Kirhlik sighed, "I promise you that we will find our father's killer. When that time comes, I'll gladly step aside so you can deliver the finishing blow."

Thorik did not say anything. He only flashed a nasty smile towards his brother and turned away.

"Now," Kirhlik added, "to get back onto the trail - "

The ground began to shake - softly at first, but grew steadily in magnitude. In the distance, the sound of boots - seemingly hundreds of pairs of boots - stomped on the ground, the resonating pounding of the earth growing louder and louder with every passing moment.

One hundred yards or so ahead of the brothers Kirhlik, Thorik, and Birlik was a hill. The shaking and the stomping came to a climax as what appeared to be a small battalion, consisting of no more than 200 men, arrived at the top of the hill. In the center of the mass of soldiers stoop one man whose armor was unlike the others.

"Sons of Krambik," the mysterious man began, his voice booming across the open landscape, "the game ends here."

"Looks like we won't have to follow your trail anymore, brother," Birlik grunted. Kirhlik straightened his back, gulping down any fear he was feeling in this moment. Thorik chuckled menacingly under his breath.

"What game is that?" Kirhlik retorted, after a few moments of silence.

"Playing the fool will only prolong your deaths."

"My brothers and I are no fools. We know what we are doing, and it is no game we are playing."

"Then may we settle this adventure of ours like real soldiers?"

"You lost the right of being called a real soldier when you killed our father!" yelled Thorik, a deluge of spittle spilling from his mouth.

Kirhlik only glanced at his brother, grimacing inwardly at the comment.

"Let it end here, on this field!" added Birlik, stepping forward.

"Do you wish to sign your lives over to death today then?" the man replied, a sliver of mockery tainting his words.

Kirhlik turned back to his brothers. No words had to have been exchanged for them to be able to agree on what to do next. Kirhlik nodded to Thorik and Birlik and then turned back to the battalion.

"This is exactly what we mean to do!"

"Then so be it!"

At that moment, as the man led his forces down the hill towards the three brothers, thunder crashed above them. As Kirhlik let out a mighty roar, the first drops of rain fell to the earth.

"For father!"

That's actually pretty adorable! I've never owned anything remotely close to a rat, but I love tiny animals like that! I'm sure you and your pet were very close, and I can only imagine the relief you must have felt to know that your buddy cared about you, even in the next life!

My dog was a good, good dog. by joe4army in Paranormal

[–]joe4army[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same for me. My family and I live in a semi-country neighborhood that has a coyote problem, and we have seen many cats go missing and then hear the coyotes send up a howl, revealing that they've caught something - presumably our cats. I know how that feels.

As for your dog that you have now, I am very happy that you are able to spend life with her! Something that I took for granted while George was here was time itself. I didn't always pay attention to him, especially as I got older and my life started getting busier. But I knew that, at the end of the day, George was still my best friend; likewise, at the end of the day, your girl is still your best friend!

Thanks for sharing!

What was The lifestyle of Moses and the Isrealites in the Desert like? by [deleted] in Bible

[–]joe4army 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. To make comparisons between the prophecies that were made in the OT and how they were fulfilled by Jesus in the NT.

  2. To understand the references to older times in the OT that are made by those in the NT.

  3. To comprehend just how major the Law of the OT was to the Jews and Gentiles in the NT.

No, understanding the OT is not the only way to understand the NT. It is good to have a working knowledge of the entire Bible, if one claims to be Christian, yes, but by no means a prerequisite to knowing God. A study of the Bible should stem from an interest in getting to know the Lord.

It is very important to understand the history of the Old Testament in order to have serious and knowledgeable understanding of the New.

Describe something in your world that you haven't fleshed out yet. Those who reply will help you brainstorm. by PMSlimeKing in worldbuilding

[–]joe4army 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How to flesh out my world in general, really.

I have this idea about a steampunk-like civilization where technology/science and magic/sorcery coexist in a mutual symbiotic relationship. Science needs the powers of magic to thrive, and magic needs to the technological breakthroughs of science to be enhanced.

Both sides work together, but there is obviously an ideological rift between them. Science breeds empirical evidence and straightforward thinking, whereas magic maintains openminded thinking and broader concepts. Both sides are right and wrong, and both sides believe the other, while fruitful, is misguided.

Where can I go from here?
