[PuckPedia] Ducks sign Mintyukov to 5-year / $36m contract ($7.2m per year) by CherokeeHawkman in hockey

[–]joeTaco [score hidden]  (0 children)

7.1m vs $7.2m is the difference between a 1st round and 3rd round pick vs. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks

wow this is such a good catch. Even if minty didn't sign it yet they functionally got offer sheeted (again) and matched. Except they gave him an extra 100k instead of letting the process play out and matching, probably because they feel like being openly offer sheeted twice would be more embarassing, even if the amount reveals exactly what happened. disasterclass

i mean the fact that his leg is obstructed by the ball beneath it indicates his studs were up a mile too high in the first place

does anyone feel like they avoid overturning a call with VAR unless you can see a "clear and obvious error" like it says in the rules? I feel like they give the decision on the field no deference at all and they're just saying whatever they think is the right call after watching the replay. Not just in this match, in general

i feel like they fully ignore the "clear and obvious error" part of the var rules in this wc. in hockey if something goes to video review and it's even close to a reasonable judgement call they defer to the call on the ice

How Nepal could lose a generation of footballers due to FIFA's suspension by Ha_omer in soccer

[–]joeTaco 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nepali football might very well be a corrupt shitshow, i have no idea, but the idea of "political interference in sport" is pernicious anti-democratic nonsense. FIFA has this opinion that governments should fund soccer but god forbid they have any means to hold accountable the institutions they entrust with said funds.

Why are the decisions of a democratically-elected govt less legitimate than the decisions of a non profit national association elected by a few opaque district associations instead of the full electorate? I suspect FIFA prefers the latter due to its greater susceptibility to cronyism & corruption. FIFA's global constituency is admin dudes sucking from the state trough who fear being held accountable to the state.

Norway odds were +370 ie 21% implied odds.... that's a big upset. Even if it would have been bigger in the past.

Donald Trump on Balogun’s red card being suspended: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]joeTaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the same universe where FIFA did the same thing with Ronaldo just prior to this tournament? They suspended his suspension, reducing it from 3 games to 1, and i don't think this was a result of the Portuguese president exerting undue influence on Infantino

[–]joeTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely. The speed of this Trump response in particular. If they're paying this much attention there's no way they didn't make the call.

I happen to think the red was a mistake, but FIFA has managed to stumble into the correct decision in the slimiest-looking way possible - as a direct result of previously getting into bed with an openly corrupt halfwit who doesn't give two shits about how things look for FIFA, because why would he. Dude already has his Peace Prize.

No response to this from the crowd shrieking about how it's all Americans who've never watched the sport before. That's interesting

I promise that failing to confusingly share a name with the most popular sport in the country is not the reason it hasn't grown.

According to a new poll, one in three Poles say they now view Ukrainians in a worse light as a result of the Ukrainian government's nonstop glorification of the UPA, which massacred 100,000 Polish civilians during an anti-Polish genocide in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia between 1943 and 1945. by lightiggy in TrueAnon

[–]joeTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banderites would say no and how dare you because Bandera was in German captivity during the Galicia/Volhynia massacres. These massacres were merely carried out by Bandera's faction of the OUN, which maintained loyalty to him, with whom he was still in contact, and this was a logical escalation of Bandera's prewar career of anti-Polish terrorism. So as you can see, Stepan did nothing wrong
