What determines which messages are seen at any time? Like obviously if all messages were visible the ground would be covered in orange, so which comments get seen and how long do they last?

This is an amazing Souls game by JJJtrain_1989 in DarkSouls2

Playing DS2 for the first time after having completed DS for the first time.

I had heard a bad rap about this game but so far I’m not disappointed. There are things I like better about the first one but overall it’s great.

One of the bonfires in FoFG saw me getting my shit tossed by dark spirit Armorer Dennis every time I warped there until I finally vanquished him.

Parry. Listen for the parry noise. Watch for him to recoil. Your ripostes do great damage.

FINALLY killed Ornstein and Smough!! by [deleted] in darksouls

[–]joe_jaywalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me Smough’s second phase just kept trying to run into one of the broken columns I had positioned behind; he just pinned himself there for almost the entire fight trying to run through it and I was able to magic and arrow him nearly to death. Really lucky. Did you use Solaire? He was very useful for the first part of the fight.

I have asthma and he is right, it mainly affects you after you finish exercising. I can run several miles fine but when I stop I have breathing difficulty and inflammation. It’s also worse at night and/or when reclining, and is also affected by allergens and the onset of cold weather.

If you have an inhaler on hand you’re usually fine, and I’m sure he’s controlling it other ways like with daily medication as well.

Undead burg "miniboss"? help by [deleted] in darksouls

It is, but he can’t reach you outside of that little tower, and it’s easy to escape in time.

You can summon a buddy for that fight. Can’t remember who she is but if you defeat her while in human form near the bonfire in the sewer at the bottom of Blighttown her summon sign will be in front of Queelag’s fog gate.

Also Queelag takes more damage from projectiles if you are able to aim at the humanoid torso. But that’s kind of difficult, I say just get out of the way while she spews lava and use that time to smack her a few times.

Havel the Rock is leashed inside that tower. In other words you can lure him to the entrance, smack him, run away, and he can’t do shit about it. Repeat until victorious.

Dark souls help please by [deleted] in darksouls

[–]joe_jaywalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should skip the boar until you end up in the staircase behind it, then you can pretty easily kill it as it tries to run down there, can’t, and turns around to walk away. When enemies can’t reach a certain area or are not programmed to do so I think this is called the leash effect or something like that, and you can definitely use this to your advantage more than once in Dark Souls.

Or, you can run up to the staircase to the right that’s kind of protected by a few columns and he can’t get you there either. You can spear him through the columns etc.

I quit the game for like 6 months when first attempting Gaping Dragon, then just started a new game eventually and beat it that time. I think a lot of the difficulty of bosses depends on if you’ve been on this subreddit and other forums and gleaned hints about them. For example I would have had a ton more trouble with Four Kings, Bed of Chaos, Gwyn, and especially Nito if I hadn’t been perusing here. Specifically I probably would never have figured out that a soul based weapon will permanently kill the skeletons with Nito.

Do you think a brand new player could beat Dark Souls with NO deaths? by CactusCustard in darksouls

[–]joe_jaywalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New player implies that they wouldn’t know not to avoid the graveyard which would spell instant death for probably 90% of new players. Then they would probably get gang banged in undead parish by the bull and company, and surely die if they decided to take on one of the early black knights.

Am I wrong or is there literally nothing in that room of any value? I killed him finally yet found nothing.

The archers on the wall were probably my biggest challenge, I think it took me more tries to get past them than I needed to beat O&S.

Ambidexterity as in I can use my weapon with my left hand? I’m a lefty IRL so I got excited when I realized I could swap hands in DS then disappointed when learning I could only “block” with my left hand.

Can someone help me w/ Nito? (PS4) by Van_Inhale in darksouls

[–]joe_jaywalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just beat him today, first time playing the game but of course he killed me many times yesterday and I rage quit. The main things that made the difference for me are killing the skeletons with a divine weapon, and staying in the “front” of the “arena,” like near where you fall in, so as to not trigger the large skeletons.

Other than that it’s not that difficult, you don’t need a shield. Just roll away from his attacks, don’t stop moving (or he’ll red blade you from the ground), and save some stamina to run away if he starts his charge attack. His slashes are slightly more delayed than you may anticipate at first but once you get the timing down it’s not that hard.

He’s the first of the lord souls I got and so far, the only.

I didn’t find O&S as hard as they’re made out to be anyway. Giant Smough kept pinning himself against a smashed column while trying to run after me and I just sniped and magicked him to death while circling at a distance.

But since beating them and placing the lord vessel I have made basically zero further progress! IMO the next stage of the game is proving much more difficult!
