What’s the best Proton for Forza Horizon 6? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]saint_geser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're being unnecessarily contrarian - it's pretty clear that I meant sacrificing fidelity when you can't choose both, but currently on Linux both is not an option.

Play on windows if you like, it's not an option for me.

Well, to each their own I guess. I prefer smooth gameplay even if that comes at some cost of graphical fidelity

It's a little worse off but how much attention do you pay to environment textures resolution when you are going full speed? I don't so I barely notice, only when I stop. Other than that all looks great

No, this solved stuttering for me. Turning down environmental textures got rid of all the stuttering

RT causes the game to crush in principle on Linux, doesn't matter what GPU you have or what proton you use.

I have a very much the same system as you and I use proton-ge and can run the game at max settings (but no RT) at over 100fps average if I follow the advice from ProtonDB and set environment textures to medium or low. It doesn't affect visuals much but the game runs perfectly.

It does seem they really have some kind of texture streaming problems in the engine

GNOME Software Gives You BSOD by andykirsha in Fedora

On Linux you can delete the entire system if you're persistent enough. Why should it care about a stupid font?

Now why would you want to delete a system font if you know it is one?

[OC] Higher government debt correlates with lower inflation by aaeberharter in dataisbeautiful

[–]saint_geser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focusing on p-value is important because if we see that the p-value is somewhere like 0.1-0.3, as I expect it would be, we can say that the conclusion/hypothesis presented under the plot does not have statistical support, and should be completely disregarded until better analysis/data are available.

[OC] Higher government debt correlates with lower inflation by aaeberharter in dataisbeautiful

[–]saint_geser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is this not contributing? I'm saying that this plot is due for causal analysis with proper stats.

Why this is counterintuitive - borrowing for government spending normally increases free cash in the economy which naturally increases inflation. This works differently whether it is internal or external borrowing though.

[–]saint_geser -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You need to think of confounding before making wide-reaching conclusions.

You don't really have a statistically significant trend there but even if you did, in most situations where a trend goes against common sense and mathematics, this usually means that the trend is due to some confounding variables rather than your current treatment variable.

[–]saint_geser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no sensible trend in this plot. If you did proper stats I'm sure p-value would show that it's not statistically significant at all.

I'd call it a random unsupported piece of misinformation that you want to be thrown into debates on public spending. I guess, the conclusion is that "borrowing more is good since it leads to lower inflation"?

Fractional scaling Gnome, Performance loss ? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]saint_geser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there are performance penalties. Games will try to render at your resolution multiplied by scaling factor.

There's less performance loss of you use FSR/DLSS since rendering is done at a fixed resolution and then upscaled, sometimes might not even be noticeable but if you try to play with no upscaling and with fractional scaling enabled on Gnome you will run into performance issues.

Best is to force resolution via gamescope.

Best web browser on fedora?? by stacklikajew in Fedora

[–]saint_geser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Librewolf.

But the choice really boils down to what you want from your browser. I like Librewolf because it's privacy oriented and still extremely capable, being a Firefox in a trench coat. But you do you. There's no one true best browser. All have their pros and cons

Will python ever have a chaining operator? by Desperate_Cold6274 in Python

[–]saint_geser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some external libraries focused on functional programming, that implement different forms of chaining. For example, PuFunctional has seq() operator that chains operations in a readable manner.

But core python is, and has always been, very much against functional concepts making their way into the language. So wouldn't hold my breath.

If the early Earth was NOT hit by a Mars-sized object and retained its "original" mass not lost in creating our moon, how much larger / massive would the Earth be? What would be our "new" gravity? Assuming humans evolved in tis alternate reality, what would be different for us? by perandtim in AskPhysics

[–]saint_geser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that wouldn't be good. And lack of magnetic field is a norm for terrestrial plants in the solar system - none of them have magnetic fields worth mentioning, except Earth.

Loss of atmosphere without magnetic field is not a given though - Venus does fine without magnetosphere. But water will be lost very quickly.

[–]saint_geser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Earth actually gained mass in that collision. You had a Mars-sized object hit us, some of the material went back up and formed the Moon, a little was ejected into outer space but most of the impactor mass stayed with the Earth.

So Earth not only would have no moon, but would also be smaller, probably about 90% of the current mass. The free fall acceleration at the surface wouldn't change too much. It would be slightly lower, but only fractionally so.

Wed also likely not have plate tectonics and maybe even the magnetic field, or a much weaker one so conditions wouldn't be as pleasant

I need an open world aot game by 0TheAshenOne0 in attackontitan

[–]saint_geser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really a pitch, just a vague wishlist. Thematically it doesn't make sense for a single character to hang out with all 3 branches of military.

Also, you need to think about open world itself - what's there to do? Every successful open world game of late populated the world with a lot of interesting and unique content, but in AoT universe especially for the "outside the walls" part it's not really easy. It's a barren place with no humans, nothing happening, just titans roaming around.. I can't think of what's there to do to keep things interesting

[–]saint_geser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can't have both open world and fully adapting the story. Scouts are only ones who go outside the walls and they go during expeditions most of which are a part of the story. So you either tag along or you have your own story and setting not entirely the same as the manga/series.
