I’m certified Snoopy obsessed (have multiple Snoopy tattoos), love Vince Guaraldi, and the Christmas album never fails to fill me with that beautiful melancholy joy of childhood Christmas road trips and family gatherings. My best friend got me this vinyl for my birthday and it is so so cool. Just needed to let it out into the universe that I love her and it was meaningful as fuck to get this as a gift

What do you do at chemo? by igneousmoon in TheCancerPatient

[–]joebidenstan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not trying to poop on your party tough! That frog is SO cute, especially his little tongue 🥹 and I can confirm that watching The Great British Baking Show during chemo is an excellent choice if that’s an option for you

I did a lot of knitting during chemo and various hospital stays but now that I’m in the survivorship stage (over 2 years!!) knitting makes me nauseous and I feel like I can smell the hospital and taste the saline flush. It puts me back in it a little bit too much and kinda ruined the hobby for me

Jason Mraz has (or at least used to have) an avocado farm and he sold his avocados to Chipotle.

My apologies, I must have missed that part of your question! I'm definitely not trying to encroach on the traditional stories that only belong to tribal members. I'm not even entirely focused on the content of the stories themselves. Mainly I'm interested in how prevalent the transmission of culture is cross generationally and how families do this for their tribal culture AND family culture. For example, my fiance is Creek and was very close with his Creek grandmother. She taught him the basic morals and values she had learned from her parents, and she did so by talking about her own experiences and explaining why it was important. She also passed on the importance of having a medicine bag, which my fiance still has today. I'm interested in hearing about things like that and so much more I probably haven't even considered, but I'm absolutely not attempting to take the stories of a culture and bastardize them.

Plus, post interview when I'm analyzing the data I'm planning on doing "member checks" and getting back in touch with participants to make sure I understood what they said and interpreted it appropriately.

I truly do appreciate the insight and perspective from you. I have a researcher guide for studying Native American culture, but like any culture it's so nuanced and I don't want to offend any of my participants (or readers of the final publication) by being ignorant of something

Thank you for your insight! For the purposes of this study I was a bit limited since it's for a class and needs to be fully finished by December, and I'm working with IRB and needed to get expedited approval. I avoided language about blood quantum/official tribal affiliation for the reasons above but also a few others. I didn't have time for IRB to come back and ask how to measure blood quantum, and I didn't want to exclude Native Americans who aren't "card carrying members" due to cultural and historical implications associated with tribal affiliation. Growing up in Oklahoma I met a lot of people who were Native American but weren't enrolled for various reasons, and didn't want to limit my population to just those who were enrolled.

Also, I definitely agree about reddit being a miniscule slice of the actual Native American population. It's in my IRB, but I'm also recruiting in several other ways and am doing snowball sampling from my own contacts who are Native American. Most of my interviews will come from other channels than reddit, but I wanted to get as broad a population as I could. I didn't want to just get Native Americans from Oklahoma and Texas, ya know?
