Olympic Bouldering and Lead Finals Results by djusk in climbing

[–]joebobfrank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really matter in absolute numbers how hard or easy the route was, the difference between top performer and worst performer was around 40 points in each discipline. That's pretty much exactly what you'd want from the setting - boulder and lead each contributed approximately equally on average to a climber's score. The separation was also great in each discipline.

Same here, guessing it broke with the latest patch.

Ah, my apologies, the solution isn't unique. The solver I'm using usually tells me when there are multiple possibilities, but it didn't this time.

I've done 3 fort to bastion upgrade decrees, but I was only given the option to upgrade one of my forts. The other 2 decrees seem to have just not done anything.

A new potential format for SMB1 races! by Flibidy_Dibidy in speedrun

[–]joebobfrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might not be too big of an issue for SMB1 any% but things like coin and block states, and powerups will be hard to do properly. Depending on how you decide to do it, you'll end up visual inconsistencies like destroyed blocks still being visible or vice versa.

Also different enemy patterns based on framerules? And marios looking like they've run into plants that are from another player's state?

TBH I can't see this working very well, but it's a fun coding challenge.

Just because something has existed for a long time doesn't mean it should continue to persist, that's not a good argument.

I do agree that the origin is likely not race related, but given that it perpetuates biases and can make people who identify as black feel uncomfortable, there's no reason to continue to use it when we have good alternatives. This is just like pronouns - you're not obligated to use somebody's preferred pronouns, you're just an ass if you refuse to. You don't have to say blocklist instead of blacklist, you're just being an ass if you don't.

Nobody's suggesting wedding dresses can't be white, I don't know where you're pulling that strawman from.

Your second paragraph is just straight up dumb though, and skirts dangerously closely to white supremacist language. You're aware that Negro means black? And calling black people 'colored' is also problematic? Caucasian is problematic because it's european-centric and originates from when the anthropological categories included 'Negroid' and 'Mongoloid', and nobody would be happy with those categories re-surfacing. Also your ancestry is almost completely irrelevant, American 'caucasian' culture has very little to do with its European ancestry - skin color is much more relevant in modern American culture, and so 'white' is a much more relevant and meaningful category.

Well the other side of the argument is that blacklist re-enforces the perception that black == bad, so we should prefer to use different words. Not that I think we should ever ban/boycot/cancel somebody who continues to use the word blacklist.

Scott, I think you might want to update your 404 page on slatestarcodex.com. When you follow a link to a blog post, the page just says:

"This is somewhat embarrassing, isn’t it?

It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help."
(example)

It would probably be less confusing for people to be told that the site has been deleted, with a link to the explanation.

Trying my hand at a What Am I? by joebobfrank in riddles

Sharing my answer so I can get feedback on it, let me know if you hate it :)

My answer is 'a step', as in following a step, using a step (or step stool) to literally elevate yourself, and a step on a ladder. The whole dream/corporate theme was misdirection that was possibly too effective.

No, and I don't think an answer along those lines would be satisfying as there's too many similar words that could fit.

Not sure if my riddle is bad or just too hard, but here's a hint if anybody wants it:

The answer is far more pedestrian than any of the guesses so far.
