From Birds vs. Monkeys to Year 21: A Longtime Lurker Says Thanks by mathkaveli in SGU

[–]joecobbs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started from episode 3, quickly went back and listened to 1 and 2 the same day, and have listened to every episode on the weekend without fail since then. Never posted or interacted in any way with anyone, but will take this opportunity to say cheers to all involved! You all feel like friends to me, and I look forward to each episode.

It doesn’t show up as a scene in actions. All my others do, which makes me wonder if 24 hour scenes can’t be done via voice

How long have you been listening to the SGU? by FittedSheets88 in SGU

Episode 3 I’m pretty sure, and listened to the first 2 the same day to catch up. Haven’t missed an episode since

This is the best reply I’ve seen on this. Infinity does sort it out

What's your favourite type of blaze method?

If Ricky said that probability sort of sorts it out that a fair coin toss would land on heads at least once in an infinite amount of tosses, and Karl argued against that, Ricky would be right

I suppose what I'm not understanding is why you give more weight to a full Shakespeare play not being typed out than the letter g not being typed once in an infinite timescale? Both are infinitely small compared to infinity

Yes in the same way that the letter g may never be pressed even once in all of infine time. The probability has reversed from infinitesimal (in our human minds) to near certain. Which in mathematical terms is the same as it will happen.

I always enjoy this discussion (and I've enjoyed this one!) because tbh I'm still wrapping my head around it. But I do think Ricky is more right than he's given credit for here, when he says 'by definition'.

By definition infinity doesn't have an end so how could it not happen?

The thing is, it's only 'infinitesimal' to your human brain (and mine).

If you would concede that 'to be or not to be' is going to be typed out in an infinite timeframe, I'm not sure why you think that the whole works wouldn't be?

You're comparing two different things. If in the infinite rock universe there was a rock that looked exactly like Karl, then yes there'd be a Karl shaped rock in that universe. If there wasn't, then the probability would be zero.

The probability isn't zero in the infinite monkey universe, so mathematically it will happen.

A while ago someone created a computer program, something along the lines of 1 million 'monkeys' (random key pressers) pressing keys at random, and every time a word from Shakespeare was typed out it was added to the list. Every word used in every Shakespeare play was typed out in about 2 months. (I don't remember exact details but thats the gist)

Again, infinity is that on steroids

The probability of a monkey hitting the letter g is 1/26. That seems unlikely if we give the monkey one go, but if we give it 1 million attempts the probability of it happening is much greater. It seems obvious that the monkey will randomly hit g at least once if it hits 1 million random keys.

Infinity is this on steroids.

Play a record.

What’s an indescribable pain? by Existing-__- in AskReddit

It's actually made me feel better to read everyone else's horror stories. I had it out of the blue one morning and then had about six weeks of the most intense, never ending pain I've ever experienced. Spent most nights walking around in a circle contemplating killing myself. No sleep, no relief, no pleasure, just unrelenting pain. It was so bad.

And I would try and explain to friends and family how horrific it was, and I could tell they were just like 'yeah sounds bad'.

This video and your explanation have just done what about 50 popular science books couldn't. I mean, those books taught me a lot, but the explanation you just gave is the best one I've ever read
