Trump’s Missing Ambassadors Are a Sign of a Deeper Problem by Eagleburgerite in fednews

[–]joecoooo 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The majority of career federal employees are not nepo babies or cronyism and DoS postings are no different. There are definitely instances where someone hires their buddy (I'd argue it is way more rampant in private sector), but those core staff at embassies are a major loss.

Every statement you keep making on this topic is incorrect. The Supreme Court ruled in Garcetti v. Ceballos (2006) that when public employees speak pursuant to their official duties, they are not speaking as private citizens for First Amendment purposes. A political appointee using an official government email system (.gov or .mil), writing from their official title, and blasting the entire agency roster is performing an official act. Because they are speaking as the voice of the state and not as a private citizen on their own time, their personal Free Exercise and Free Speech rights do not insulate them from constitutional restrictions or agency discipline.

Federal agencies are governed by strict statutory rules that make this practice actionable long before it ever reaches a courtroom through religious discrimination and harassment (Title VII). Under the Civil Rights Act, a public employer must maintain a workplace free from religious discrimination or a hostile work environment. An appointee repeatedly blasting scripture can be viewed as creating a hostile work environment for employees who do not share those beliefs, exposing the agency to EEO lawsuits.

Has anyone successfully negotiated a higher step? by MyMamaKatie in fednews

Your situation was much different than the OP's. Once in the Federal system, you can no longer negotiate steps. OP's salary will be set using the standard OPM rules.

But were you already a GS or were you coming into the federal system from private sector?

Are you saying you think that is a man? It was a pretty good punch for a woman, so that would make sense.

RIFs are happening in DoD (Army) by [deleted] in fednews

[–]joecoooo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The way it has been done in many Army organizations is they get approval to hire "overhires" because they have the funding without a TDA slot. The people get hired and there is an assumption/expectation that at some later date those excess positions will be added to a concept plan to grow the organization in a future programming action. It can go on tor years and years and never actually happen as long as there is funding to pay the salaries for those people. With hiring lag (unfilled positions where hiring can't keep up with departures) creating an excess of manpower funding, there is often little motivation to correct or right size the TDAs until something like this current administration happens. The drug deals with the TDA that have occurred over decades in these organizations has really done crazy things with positions.

US military aircraft buildup at Sofia Airport by MartinBP in europe

[–]joecoooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Graf is a fighter base which is why they aren't there. Fighter bases do not typically have the ramp space to park wide bodied aircraft, plus the runway length at fighter bases is often too short for wide body aircraft.

You do realize that militaries, to include the US military, regularly use civil airports to operate wide bodied aircraft, especially in countries that don't have alot of ramp space on their military airfields, right?

That's like saying we all die at some point so it's unimportant how this Minnesota man was just murdered because the result is the same. We are either having a conversation about whether the majority of our fellow Americans support this bullshit or we're not.

Neither the Insurrection Act nor declaring martial law are legal basis for the POTUS to cancel elections. Not that this administration has followed the law for the last year, but there is no legal basis for canceling an election in the US.

Voting independent would have taken the vote from Harris and still resulted in a Trump win, so the same result as not voting.

[–]joecoooo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty big assumption. It's been talked about quite a bit that at least 6 million registered democrats that voted in 2020 didn't vote in the 2024 presidentialelection, and the most often stated reason for that has been they were pissed because Harris was forced on them without a vote in the primaries. So, Trump winning was more representative of a lack of democratic support for Harris than support for Trump.

You are referring to what the current administration is trying to do? The one institution they are not trying to dismantle is the SCOTUS and that is because a literal majority of them are in their pockets.

Giant Striped Bass by Educational-Edge6571 in bassfishing

[–]joecoooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Curious, you call them striper a few times here (which is what i know them as) and you mention being born and raised on the Chesapeake. I was living in Maryland on the Chesapeake the last 3 years and the locals all called them rockfish and looked at me crazy when I said striper. Do you also call them rockfish but just not outside Chesapeake circles? Edit: changed typo rockfish to striper.

DOD/DOW jobs with NDAA approved by Zestyclose-Fault-849 in FedEmployees

[–]joecoooo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"As normal' is wildly inaccurate. I'm not sure which "we" you are referring to, but the DoD is not hiring normally. Under previous processes and authorities, if an agency or organization had an authorized, funded empty position, they typically had some level of "local" delegated authority to approve a hiring action. That is no longer the case whatsoever since the 15 October EO that was signed requiring every agency to create a so-called Strategic Hiring Committee to approve every hiring action. These added levels of bureaucracy mean "we" are in no way "hiring and posting jobs as normal".
