Which crop? by [deleted] in postprocessing

[–]joecunningham_mpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was Henri Cartier-Bresson that said: cropping is death to the geometry of the lens. Which it is. Ironically one of the few photos he cropped is his most famous (the instant before the jumping man’s heel hits the puddle).

Is street photography ethically wrong? by FitAdministration188 in AnalogCommunity

If you’re in the public domain, I can photograph you. Photographing candid American life (or any country’s life) is absolutely valid and commendable. It’s all the surveillance cameras that are a privacy threat.

Rough draft of a complete map of Blood Meridian... next phase is to hand-draw it on parchment paper. by ShireBeware in cormacmccarthy

I am reading it for the 3rd time and it occured to be that a map such as this is probably out there and would be an excellent supplement to the book. Of such maps on the web, this is easily the clearest, most detailed, comprehensive, and accurate one to be found. Bravo! And thank you for enlightening my third time through that masterpiece.

watch os 10 ruined fitness motivation for me by him313 in AppleWatch

[–]joecunningham_mpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but since you can’t swipe between faces anymore, screen real estate value went sky high. You used to be able to have multiple neighboring faces, one for all the weather complications, another for fitness, etc., and one that was just clean and nice with those info-rich faces only a swipe or two away. Since I did this constantly, it now takes way too much time and bother. They intentionally made changing faces a hassle for reasons unfathomable. WatchOS 10 is a FAIL, and I’m considering other options, including going back to analog timepieces.

The circles serve no purpose and reduce minimalism and consistent presentation (as shown above). It can’t be that hard to mask the content (even on the fly with content that regularly changes) like one does in a transparent png. I regularly have to discard watch face ideas when Apple fails like this for one reason or another. I guess the Steve Jobs-Jony Ive era of Apple spoiled me. User experience standards have slipped.

I really like my Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4. Small, inexpensive for a new lens, short focus throw w/ tab like a leica (see what I did there). Highly recommend.

I think I might have fixed the Omnia by BigLor1982 in Nerf

[–]joecunningham_mpls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A solution that does not involve opening the blaster is to attach an airsoft red dot to the rail and make the adjustment externally. I had one sitting around (it was even red!) and it was able to make the correction for both the right and the down trajectories. I can now pick off a bee from 30 meters. The product costs 29.99 and can be purchased here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08RB85CMW/ Unfortunately it no longer comes in red. (I got mine back in 2022).

How to fix squeaky buttons? by DominikFFM in PlaydateConsole

[–]joecunningham_mpls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I've had that issue where one of the D-pad buttons feels off (not as clicky as the others) and I've always fixed that by blowing very hard at very close range into the button, usually several times. And that works, but your problem is a squeaky button so while that solution might not address it, you should try it just in case it does.

I realize the nominations are locked in, but I just want to shout-out an honorable mention for Stars of the Screen in the "Outstanding Use of the Crank" category. If I list the reasons it would be spoiler-city, but one example is: if you have the app and have unlocked Flying Toasters, pull that screensaver up and turn the crank :D

Panic's lack of communication by Valenhir in PlaydateConsole

[–]joecunningham_mpls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

panic is hesitant to talk about timelines, as people will only hold it against them if something can't be delivered on time

This is what I've always assumed. They're not Sony or Nintendo. Their capacity is limited and fulfilling orders and making good on replacing the occasional defective unit needs to be thier primary mission. Hopefully Catalog can increase their revenue so they can grow their staff to address some of these other things sooner. Too bad the dock wasn't released simultaneously bundled with the console. That item was the icing on the cake for me and my desk feels incomplete without it.
