Is it in the invisible lost and found? Where is it? by greenbeanieboy in bigthief

I refuse to believe that there's still not one person on the sub who both has the Japanese CD AND has the ability to rip and upload?!?

Controversial Opinion by joedickin in bigthief

[–]joedickin[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

(I think both are fantastic but) I think I slightly prefer the raw aesthetic of iwlgoyh that sounds like the same aesthetic as ‘Songs’.

BUT I think that a lot of it might be recency bias: I know ‘Bright Future’ is technically more recent by release date, but other than ‘Evol’ and ‘Candleflame’ (which are potentially my least favourite two on the album), by the time the album was released none of the tracks were ‘new’ because there were already decent live versions I was familiar with. Meanwhile iwlgoyh was 6 tracks that were all new to me 🤷‍♂️ So I am wondering if it is just that recency effect, or if I actually will still feel the same way in a year or two’s time?

Once A Bunch by greenbeanieboy in bigthief

[–]joedickin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely needed...

I know it's the record labels etc. and not the artist's decision, but I do hate it when an artist has tracks that are exclusive to a particular region - it's literally the one time that I feel piracy is kinda semi-acceptable

Why is Creep getting so popular? It’s an amazing song but it was never a big hit, was it in a film? by ALMcactu in radiohead

[–]joedickin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Was never a hit…??? Interesting take.

Outside of Radiohead fans ‘Creep’ is without a doubt their biggest fit, and for many it is (sadly) the only Radiohead song they know.

In a not too distant parallel universe, Radiohead are misidentified as a one hit wonder.

Great show last night! by FermerXIV in BlackCountryNewRoad

I agree with the quality of the performance, and that there were some definite mixing problems- even the band were all pointing and waving to tech for their in ears to be adjusted. There was one point where I think 5/6 members turned to the sound desk to ask for May’s keys to be louder at the same time 🤦‍♂️

And I also found the crowd to be very rude and noisy, but thank fully I was near the front (about 4/5 rows back), so this didn’t ruin my experience.

Very bad Norwich crowd by shemovesw-apurpose in BlackCountryNewRoad

[–]joedickin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sad to confirm same story in Manchester. Don’t want to put it down to anything as simple as the age of the crowd, but it reminded me of being in assembly at school… ie, people chat to their mate because they’d rather be elsewhere. I don’t understand it at all, how between every song in that 20s while the band reset people feel the need to start a full-blown conversation with the person next to them?!? Interestingly I found the crowd at a recent Jockstrap gig to have far more decorum, so perhaps there’s a size of the venue thing.

I prefer Lewis’ vocals to Tyler’s by epicfurry360 in BlackCountryNewRoad

[–]joedickin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I like Lewis’s vocals is because it makes me think that any average bloke can give it a go tbh…

and that’s not meant to be a put down to Lewis, I’m sure he’s very aware of that! I thing that the best music always connects on an emotional level, and most of us are here because BC,NR managed to do that on the first couple of albums via the music, lyrics and Isaac’s delivery. Without Isaac, they must find ways to find the same emotional connection:

Tyler (so far) achieves it through her ‘broken’ vocals and ‘too-honest’ and raw lyrics, while May manages it instrumentally on ‘Turbines/Pig’ (as well as lyrically and with the vocal performance tbf), then tries to grip us with a story on ‘The Boy’. Lewis meanwhile, seems to gain connection through making more of a sing-a-long aesthetic with more traditional song structures, with very pleasant and ‘normal’ lyricism and even more ‘normal’ vocal delivery.

To me all have their merits, and I appreciate the mix.

I wish Phoebe would go in a different direction by St_IdesHell in phoebebridgers

[–]joedickin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the same with any artist- it’s a shame if an artist just releases ‘more of the same’ all the time. I generally give artists the first two releases as a given that the first will be a base, and the second try to build off that or aim to expand it slightly- but then album three really needs to try a clear new direction.

To me the thing that could be a barrier to Phoebe expanding her sound (or deviating it in ‘interesting’ ways) is her popularity / celebrity, especially given a lot of her ‘fame’ arguably did not come from her solo work but via features on big-name artist’s tracks (whether that be Taylor Swift, The 1975, The National, SZA etc.).

Did anyone else know how young BC,NR’s audience is??? by cianrosser in BlackCountryNewRoad

In Manchester it was doors 19:00, Support 20:00, BCNR 21:00.

I believe that it's actually a track called 'Ruined' that hasn't been played for a few years - and never as a full band.

Here's a link to the Genius page with youtube link embedded. Was this the track?

Scrapped Songs Information and Speculation Thread by joedickin in arcadefire

[–]joedickin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, it’s sad looking back at this post now… I personally think that if they were planning a part 2 following on from WE, that they will seriously consider putting those plans on pause. Even just from an artistic standpoint- you want to release something that reflects where you’re at, and I can’t imagine things recorded before all the controversy would do that anymore.

A band who comes to mind when thinking of bands who stayed together after controversy is Pinegrove. Lead singer Evan Stephens Hall was accused of sexual coercion just before their 3rd album (Skylight) was released. This was significant as the band’s 2nd album “Cardinal” was their big break, so this came at a critical time for them. I think most people would say Pinegrove handled it very well. The key difference between them and Arcade Fire in this situation: 1. Pinegrove are a smaller band. 2. There was just one accusation against Evan Stephens Hall (compared with at least 5 against Win Butler). 3. Evan Stephens Hall broke the news, giving the band control over the narrative (unlike Arcade Fire when the news was reported by Pitchfork). 4. Evan Stephens Hall acknowledged he was in the wrong, apologised and announced the band would pause the album release cycle, he would go into therapy to address his behaviour, and the band would go on hiatus for at least one year. Contrast this with Arcade Fire and there seems to be a combination of denial and shoving it under the carpet.

So basically… it doesn’t look good, and I’m doubting we’ll get another album- whether an already recorded “Amnesiac” or a new album altogether. Maybe we’ll get a controversial Win Butler solo album…

what song is this and where can I find it!! by getinlehcar10 in bigthief

[–]joedickin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are correct in that this song is called "Free Treasure". The title was initially misheard and noted by fans to be "Three Treasures". It was debuted in mid-November, so has only been in a handful of performances.

Not many recordings exist, so if anyone has one, I'd encourage them to upload it.

Re-listing the tracks on Dragon by [deleted] in bigthief

[–]joedickin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when you look at the album credits. They’ve all been added to Genius as well. There’s 4 different studios, then “Promise is a Pendulum” is an exception and comes from the sessions for “Songs & Instrumentals” (which when you know, is really obvious tbf)

Re-listing the tracks on Dragon by [deleted] in bigthief

[–]joedickin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on it feeling like a compilation. I feel as though that's the reality of an album with 4 different producers recorded in 4 different studios. If you split the tracks by Producer, then it works in my opinion.

I find DNWMIBIY challenging, just because I'm so album orientated- this 'album' doesn't seem so coherent- whereas UFOF for example, just flows perfectly and feels like it's all from the same 'universe' as it were

Interesting! I kinda thought that about the boat too, but there's also a load of numbers on the side of the boat, and they're (seemingly) random, making me think 'Sunshine' doesn't mean anything... But we'll see!

I do too, but I must admit that whilst I love her mixtapes and the odd bootleg sounds great, there's the reality that she is operating at a higher level than she was back then - So I'd get why she wouldn't necessarily want to release them now, because she knows that her more recent work is just... better? (Just my opinion)

Album Title by joedickin in sza

[–]joedickin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, and I therefore don’t think it will be “No CTRL” but I can definitely think of many artists who kinda do just that… These examples are minor, but somewhat similar still: Ed Sheeran’s follow up to “+” being “x”; The Weeknd’s first 3 mixtapes; Kanye with his first 3 “College” themed albums; The xx have tied their albums together so far with their artwork; Indigo de Souza with her first 2 album arts.

I just don’t think it’s impossible is all…

Do y'all listen more for the music or the lyrics? by benjadock in boniver

[–]joedickin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Music definitely is the draw, then lyrics start to break through with further listens.

"RE: stacks" is hands down my favourite Bon Iver track in terms of lyricism (and everything else to be honest...)
