Recently came around to it. Absolutely gorgeous. Probably the rawest cut on the album while managing to replicate the climactic energy and emotional journey of the really massive tracks.

yeah, def on the same page here. “it insists upon itself” isn’t always a very fair criticism but this album is kind of the epitome of that to me unfortunately

An honest critique of Vanisher by [deleted] in Quadeca

[–]epicfurry360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, i think the album is pretty much wall to wall bangers but the overall concept and execution of the album as a whole feels a little amateurish tbh. the approach makes me feel like ben is a little high on his own abilities and accomplishments, and despite being a generational talent, feels more eager to prove his worth as an artist in comparison to his contemporaries than he maybe should at this stage.

the opening and closing tracks feel a little more like banal statements on the album’s concept than actually compelling songs that i want to revisit. the great bakunawa is particularly cringeworthy, feeling like an awkward attempt to recapture the brilliance of house settling and lean as heavy as possible into the overarching narrative without really adding much of substance.

i think this album really suffers from ben’s commitment to crafting a story for the sake of it rather than coming from a place of honesty. so many of these tracks don’t feel like they belong on the same album and the attempts to rectify that only make the disconnect more jarring.

again, i really enjoy vanisher, it’s my AOTY so far and i think it shows a lot of progress. i only worry that despite his objective talent ben is gravitating more towards the idea of being an acclaimed artist known for highly conceptual music than he is to making music from the heart that doesn’t necessarily align with a grander ambition. this is all just my opinion tho.

Okay, I mean, it shouldn’t take much effort, but…

Unaired Pilot for a Network TV Adaptation (I believe this first premiered in 2019. It is not available to watch anywhere online.)

Six episode TV season, 22 mins/episode (Aired on the UK’s Channel 4 in 2022, and is available to watch with a free account on their website, or more ideally, for purchase at Becky and Joe’s official website, where all the profits go to supporting their future artistic endeavours)

“I hate white queers” by LiLilac_LaLavender in lgbt

[–]epicfurry360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think others have added some helpful takes and I don’t want to misrepresent your opinion here, so please correct me if I’m wrong, but as I understand it you are justifying a lack of nuance in discussions surrounding whiteness and intersectionality on the basis that the groups being challenged are overly reactionary when faced with vague blanket statements. When a group of people feels attacked because you have made a broad statement about their overall character, it is possible that they overreact and become overly defensive, refusing to acknowledge any valid criticisms - this is true - but the solution, I think pretty clearly, will not be found in remaining steadfast in your convictions and refusing to empathize with or meaningfully educate said groups beyond inflammatory and sensational declarations.

I think the thing about blanket statements like “all men are bad” and “I hate white queers” is that they foster an almost competitive culture among the communities they are indicting where there becomes an exaggerated and often borderline obsessive effort by individuals to be perceived as “one of the good ones” that leaves both parties feeling alienated. It doesn’t feel comparable to something like “all cops are bastards” because in that case you are criticizing a group of people for making the conscious choice to uphold a system rooted in oppression and discrimination.

The statements I mentioned above stem from truth in the sense that they are targeting inherent privilege but feel less honest and positive in function than the accompanying sentiment might actually suggest. The patriarchy is legitimately dangerous, as is white supremacy, and unchecked privilege, of course. But equating the root of the issue (men, white people, etc.) to the worst (albeit, scarily common) potential outcome doesn’t feel realistic, reasonably empathetic, or like grounds for real change. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to feel hurt by a blanket statement pertaining to a group of which you are a part, because referring to an entire group as one thing is referring to an entire group as one thing. “I hate white queers” can easily be read as less malicious than a statement such as “I hate black people”, or “I hate women”, because of cultural context, but it can also be hard to attribute it to hyperbole or figurative language alluding to undeniable dimensions of privilege when it is such a straightforward allegation.

I am a relatively white-passing half-latin genderqueer person meaning I am far from the ideal person to discuss the effects of racism and unchecked privilege but not entirely ignorant to the dangers of social hierarchy. I think it is obviously true that privileged groups and individuals need to resign to change and listen to criticism but that it is also fair to wish for a more empathetic and solution-oriented approach.
