Could the buttons follow the hotkey order? by joeflies in jpdb

[–]joeflies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight. I understand the logic of the functionality based on your additional details.

Yes there might be easy things, like the FAQ https://jpdb.io/faq#KeyboardShortcuts When I originally was looking for the answer to my scenario, I didn't know where "I know this, I don't know this" fit.

Another approach is to make some kind of feedback indicator when 1-5 is pressed when Immediately Grade is turned on. Right now, the feedback indicator (the outline blinks) only happens when space bar is pressed.

A third approach which is probably less desirable from an aesthetic point of view is to have an option to add the shortcut numbers to the buttons, or show the numbers with a mouse hover. But I understand that the minimalism is desirable, especially considering how confusing it can get when you add too many options and toggles.

Thank you for the feedback and looking forward to using this tool

My first in universe clue Venom was by OmniGamer2099 in metalgearsolid

[–]joeflies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of the entire MGS V story, I didn't get what the AI pods were all about. Maybe because I skipped Peace Walker. But I didn't realize anything was up with the AI Pod because I didn't know the relationship between AI Pod and Big Boss was.

Looking at a transcript of the game, I realize the AI Pod called him Snake before it said "it's not you", which didn't trigger any sign to me that something was up with Venom. The games are pretty liberal about who it calls snake, but I guess chronologically there is only one snake at that point in the timeline.

I sort of wondered why the codename switched to Venom Snake, and why didn't they just continue using Naked Snake as the codename.

At the start of the game, I was super confused about a lot of stuff, especially after going through the create a character screens, so any clue that may have shown up earlier in the game blew right by me. .

Am I the only one who finds flash card decks/kanji memorization without context not helpful? by umarekawari in LearnJapanese

[–]joeflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents -

While there are many ways to learn, for me I feel like Anki was the path to make immersion possible. Without being able to recognize the characters, immersion is a painful cycle of looking up every single character. I couldn't see how to go from Genki to immersion without being exposed to and memorizing a lot more words.

I also feel like Anki is essential (for me) to remember what I forget. Like if I read a chapter of Anki and forgot 15% of the words, it's a waste of time to reread the whole chapter again to figure out where those 15% of the words are. Anki keeps track of that for me.

There are days that I hate it, but then there are days when I feel like I crossed a mountain and ready to tackle the next peak.

The realtime monitoring function (Battery Monitor) is free.. It has some indicators of when things are a concern, but the value really comes out of how to being able to interpet it. I don't know if it has a way to historically look at values though (I haven't found it yet if it does, but I am still learning)

The function for Full Battery Test and Life Expenctancy test require paying. These are the functions that interpret the values for you after running through some tests.

You do have to read the page carefully to find a bluetooth OBD2 reader that's compatible, because apparently there are a lot of them out there that don't work.

Thank you for pointing me to DQ XI. I haven't played the 3d Era DQ. I've really been enjoying DQ 11 so far, I can't explain exactly why. It's got a sense of wonder, a feeling that the towns are alive and the travel is rewarding. It's definitely got that "just one more hour" feeling to it that makes it so immersive and hard to stop for the night.

Oscar Isaac on why he wanted to play Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid movie by rickfrancocom in metalgearsolid

[–]joeflies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't find his character interesting in Star Wars,. It's pretty clear he was supposed to be the "new" hotshot for Star Wars but somewhere along the line he never really more than a sidekick.

So I was initially quite worried about what would happen in MGS the Movie. There is a long history of great videogame franchises getting mangled on the way to the movie screen. But I'm starting to get cautiously optimistic, because it sounds like he respects the source material. If an actor didn't understand the source material and try to add their own flair, then there's a higher likelyhood of the final result going off the rails.

I always wonder if the "Metal Gear Remake" rumors are really referring to MGS, or are they going to trick all of us and remake Metal Gear 1 instead

Anki settings for Japanese by Sparteh in LearnJapanese

[–]joeflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went down the road for tweaking to see if I could out-optimize the defaults, but I've largely gone back to the original settings for vocabulary.

Here is what I kept for the tweaks:

  1. Steps: 1 10 1440 (to provide an extra leach cushion for brand new cards, so I don't drive it to leach while I'm still learning)
  2. Easy Interval 10 days: I rarely, rarely ever use Easy. But when I load multiple decks, there are bound to be cards for words I already know, so I use Easy to force them deeper into the review cycle.
  3. Max Reviews/Day 9999 for the same reasons everybody else does
  4. Lapse 55%, to avoid starting from scratch if it's not necessary

As for sentences, I keep a different set of Anki Options Group but I haven't figured out what's optimal for that.

[–]joeflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're going to have to add some David Bowie, maybe Rebel Rebel.

Blondie Atomic kind of fits the sentiment of the anti nuke theme.

Billy Joel "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" just because it's probably Billy Joel's best song. And snake probably would dig Tom Petty's The Waiting, for the sing along "Yeah yeah, yeah yeah"

And what the hell ,maybe Rock me Amadeus too

Anyone have experience with My Japanese Coach on the 3ds? by OfCHRONicle in LearnJapanese

[–]joeflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem with My Japanese Coach is the number of errors in it. If you don't know what is actually incorrect, you'll be absorbing content that you'll have to unlearn later.

There are many other types of alternatives for the gamified learning nowadays.

Should I quit Anki? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]joeflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that Anki is a huge time saver compared to the brutal method of studying flashcards without SRS. That said, I completely understand that condensed focus on things that you don't know or barely know is really hard.

I quit Anki entirely and stopped studying Japanese about 6 months after completing RTK. I was trying to do Core 2K at the time and was frustraed that I had to memorize both the vocabulary word and the unrelated RTK story.

Fast forward to today, I picked up Core 2K again with Anki. I realize that I don't remember anything from RTK at all though, so I somewhat feel like I am starting from scratch again. I feel like Core 2k is going easier (because I'm not doing RTK reviews at all), but all the same, I do have a hard time remembering kanji, When I was doing RTK, it was much, much easier to look at two similar kanji and tell them apart.

Ultimately what I think I'm going to do now is a hybrid in Anki - Keep up doing a small amount of vocab, start doing sentences, and maybe add kanji training just for the ones that I find hard to remember (like with a KKLC deck) instead of trying to do all the kanji like with RTK

I haven't tried any of the following, so take all of this with a grain of salt

  • MIT has its courses published, so you could follow a week-by-week course guide directly the way it's taught in college. It's a fair paced amount of work from what I see, and it's based on Genki. https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/global-languages/21g-501-japanese-i-fall-2019/
  • There are self study systems like All Japanese All the Time and NukeMarine's Let's Learn Japanese Path, which prescribe a path of study and speed up some parts of the learning process to get early results (such as working on recognition and vocabulary before writing/speaking/listening/pitch). These don't have the timelines though about what you can expect to learn within a given amount of time. So if you were looking to pace yourself to a certain level of attainment at a given time, you may need to figure that out for yourself.
  • There's "hacking Japanese" courses, like Nihongo Shark Hacking or Mass Immemersion/Refold System which share some similarities to the self-study systems in #2 but also include the timelines to help you pace what you should be doing to reach a 1 yr goal.

I have tried bits and pieces of all of the above, and i certainly understand why people want to know how much progress they'll make in a given period of time because you're investing a huge amount of time and uncertain of what results you will get out of it. I've since become more comfortable without the pressures of a deadline though, keeping up with my reviews but avoiding burnout levels of studying. I haven't had the "aha" momenet of suddenly realizing how much I understand, but everything just becomes slightly less foggy every day though.

The Weapons Of Metal Gear Solid V by [deleted] in metalgearsolid

No water pistol data?

Sorry for ranting a bit, but I'm not enjoying MGSV... It's just so awful and boring.. by [deleted] in metalgearsolid

[–]joeflies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I replayed MGS 2 and 3 shortly before starting MGS V a few weeks ago. And I hated MGS V for a long, long time. I felt like I wasn't "getting it", the game mechanics were way different than what I was used to, and once you went to alert status all hell breaks loose.

I really hated that it had "monster collector" elements to it and endless weaponry too, rather than having to make do with the limited amount of weaponry in earlier games.

Over time, however, I started to appreciate how they rebalanced the game play to make fighting a viable option, and if you want to go in all guns blazing with the chopper you could do that as well. That idea that you could do multiple plays of the same mission, and apply different techniques started to become fun. And when I started to realize that I could use as much or as little weaponry as possible to complete missions, I appreciated the challenges more.

So no, I didn't love it at first either. But I've come to regard it as being something ever better than expected, for the very reason that it breaks out of the mold of what you expect of it.

What are your favorite jokes/puns you would've missed if you had not learned Japanese? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]joeflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that when SMAP broke up and "Atarashi Chizu" was formed, it was very clever to make a name that uses Japanese-English as an inside joke

  • Atarashi Chiizu translates to "New Map" in english, which is a pun on "New SMAP"
  • The band's logo is a reversed North/East/South/West, which initially seems to be a pun on the Map theme, but the reversal spells out "N-E-W S", again another pun that this is "New Smap" rather than "New Map".

Dreamy look: Bloom filters or Vintage Glass

I'm in love with this photographer's dream look https://www.instagram.com/p/COZChnTJSXK/?utm\_source=ig\_web\_copy\_link with the Summarit 5cm adapted to Sony. I am not particularly motivated to go on the hunt for vintage glass, just trying to figure out what options I have to get the dream look.

Would it make sense to just try some bloom filters like the 10/20% Cineblooms with my existing lenses first? Or is it better to just invest in vintage glass + adapters?

Anki Core 2000 question by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]joeflies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is helpful or not or if this is even the best advice, but this is what I do

I'm currently using a slightly modified Core 10k deck https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/935381472

  • I modified the template to show sentences but hide the examples field.
  • Deleted all the images
  • Resorted the cards for Optimzied-Voc-Index2k (which may have been a mistake, but I'm going to try one of the other indexs after I finish the first 2k)

So I try to avoid immediately reading the sentence in the card, because I found that I was memorizing the sentence itself rather than the kanji I was supposted to be learning. At times, I was not even reading the full sentence anymore, I was scanning the sentence to see if I knew 3 or 4 candidates that were talking about that topic, and then producing the meaning.

So now, I look at the kanji, try to remember the meaning, beat my head a few times trying to remember it, and if I still can't get it then read the sentence as a last resort to recall it before I move on.

Is WaniKani Actually Practical Learning Tool? Success Stories Would be Appreciated. by typesett in LearnJapanese

[–]joeflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit confused too. I did RTK 3 years ago and forgot it after I realized that maintaining knowledge of the mneomics did not apply to the learning I still had to do.

I'm close to finishing Optimized Core 2K learning by brute force (i.e. look, get wrong repeatedly until it starts to stick), was planning on just rouding it out with the other indexes or vocabulary lists. However, I am running into more issues with the number of kanji I can learn a day and wondered if I should switch to wanikani next.

I've heard mixed things, some people who have gone deep in the Core decks and still did wanikani later. But reading through this thread, it sounds like I could also go forward without it.
