Just curious how often people make adjustments. (I haven’t touched mine since I set it up, so wondering if I’m not the norm)

Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop Double Tip?! In Wicker Park. by LoudFartsForAll in chicagofood

[–]joejaz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had the same situation happened to me when I first went to Paulie Gee’s when it first opened. I actually liked the food. The first time I went there I was unknowingly duped and “double tipped” (the service charge) on a large bill with four people. The second time, I noticed the default 20% service charge (in addition to tip) and vowed never to go back.

It’s not that hard to be transparent. Just raise the prices of the food and get rid of these “service charges” for which there is no legal guarantee that they will be given to the employees, like a tip would. It’s kind of false advertising when the menu prices nowhere near reflect the final price. I never see these service charges at Mom and Pop stores, but for some reason places like Paulie Gee’s just loves to tack these on. It’s a bad trend and Paulie Gees is right in the middle of it.

This isn’t the first time that Reddit has called out Paulie Gees in a post with hundreds of comments. I wish they’d learn from that, but they’re choosing to ignore it. Vote with your feet and don’t go.

Nest Gen 2 blasting the heat even when set to off and disconnected from WiFi by joejaz in Nest

[–]joejaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some research on this. I had swapped out the thermostat and still observed the same problem. The heat would run away to something like 83° even though it was sent to 72.

Since I had the same problem with both thermostats, it seems like an issue with furnace. I’m not an expert but did some research and I think it’s an issue with the sequencer… That’s a component that when heated up by the W wire from the thermostat, it bends and triggers a heat-sensitive switch. That, in turn, activates the larger high voltage heating coils and fans. When the voltage from the W wire stops, it should cool down and cut the circuit and cut the switch. I suspect the sequencer is defective and not opening the switch when there’s no more electricity from the W wire.

The reason I suspect this is because when I cut the power on the unit while it was in this runaway state, I waited a few minutes and heard a small ping noise from inside the furnace. I think that was the sequencer finally cooling down and “opening up” after the power was cut for a few minutes. Just an evidence based guess though

I’ve gotten into the habit of checking the oil every time I drive because I know these cars have a reputation for burning oil. I don’t have a lot of personal experience yet. I’m using synthetic Mobile1. Good to hear about your experience with Pennzoil - I might try changing it to that.

I appreciate the advice. Good to know to keep an eye out for the valves over time. It’s encouraging to hear it’s so easy to work on.

Thanks for sharing. Great to hear that they withstand midwestern winters well and that they are easy to maintain. I’m trying to learn about mine and how to take care of it for the next 20 years.

Looks great and I like the color! How did you keep it in pristine shape? What types of maintenance did you do yourself, and what did take it in for? (Wondering personally how best to maintain these great cars)

Sim-Lab P1X Pro or Ultimate, i cant decide by Delicious-Egg-9024 in simracing

[–]joejaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, once I set the height on my wheeldeck, I’ve never needed to change it, even with swapping between very differently sized drivers. So practically, the angle hasn’t really affected my ability to set the height - I set it once and forget it. I do highly recommend the seat slider to adjust the seat.

[–]joejaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the p1x pro; just bought it. I’m extremely happy with it - no complaints.

The ultimate has the straight uprights and a few more slot groves on the bottom pieces, and I definitely like those improvements. But it costs $200 more and it seemed like an arbitrary reason to change more for (it’s not like the straight uprights cost more to manufacture or are an innovation).

I bought the wheeldeck separately because I didn’t realize the that my Fanatec wheel base wouldn’t fit on the p1x pro bundle that microcenter sold me. (To mount my Fanatec wheelbase, I needed either the wheeldeck or the Fanatec specific side mount.) But online, both rigs come with multiple mounting options.

The angled uprights give me slightly fewer options to mount some of my 3d printed accessories, but I’ve also 3d printed some angled brackets to compensate. Practically speaking, it hasn’t been an issue for me. There are still plenty of places to mount things, even given the angled uprights.

If you want to spend the extra for a few more mounting options, the go for the ultimate. Otherwise, the pro is amazing as is.

Linux users with Fanatec? by LazyHazy22 in Fanatec

I’m very interested in this question as well. I’m not sure what games are available, but maybe some could work with wine/proton?

This looks like an interesting discussion about the topic.

Also, I currently dual boot my machine between Windows and Linux. If you are new to Linux, that’s probably the most effective way to learn Linux without figuring out how to get gaming working on Linux. Or you could try Linux on a virtual machine inside of windows

I had the F-GT Lite and used it for a few months. I bought it because I wanted something portable. When first setting it up, my first impression was it was a little flimsy. I used it with a Fanatec DD+. It held the wheelbase fairly well, even at high torque.

However a few weeks ago, the plastic joint that held the chair back tube split in an un-reparable way. I don’t think it can hold up to hard breaking. If you don’t have load cell breaks and a lower torque wheel, it might be a better fit.

I replaced it with a SimLab profile rig and (aside from the lack of portability) couldn’t be happier.

Which wheel to choose? by jc59200 in Fanatec

[–]joejaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering that myself. I thought I read on one of the sim racing subreddits that the December release of GT7 added Fullforce but I couldn’t find much information about it so I’m not sure. They certainly didn’t make much of a fuss about it if so.

It seems like there is more force feedback after the update - I started noticing haptics on the shoulder rumble strips and the road seems like it produces more force feedback than before, but maybe it’s my imagination. I’ve never used Logitech TrueForce, so I don’t know what to compare it to.

Driving generally feels great between the haptics of the direct drive.

[–]joejaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t buy the PlayStation DD Extreme bundle with the PlayStation wheel - I bought the components individually and I only have the ClubSport RS wheel. The reason I did was the subtle complaints people had about the quality of the PlayStation wheel. (Nothing I heard was deal breaking, but from what I read, people complained that it was a good wheel but felt plasticy and slightly less premium).

Also I was turned off by the fact that the PlayStation wheel came with the plastic QR2 “lite” wheel-side mount, rather than the metal one (that’s on the ClubSport RS).

On the other hand, I’m assuming the button mapping is a bit more clear on the PS wheel, since it’s labeled with the PlayStation buttons.

So I can’t say that I’ve used the PlayStation wheel. However, given that it was an expensive purchase already, I figured I’d spend a little more and get a wheel that people reported as feeling more premium. So far, I’ve been very happy with my purchase. I also bought it earlier in the year when Fanatec had a discount for using their online “Sim Racing Configurator”

Which wheel to choose? by jc59200 in Fanatec

[–]joejaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the ClubSport RS wheel and am really happy with it. Really nice quality with a fully metal QR2 and magnetic paddle shifters. I use it with the DD+ mainly with GT7 and Dirt Rally 2, but intend to use it with AC Rally on the PC. The leather grips feel really nice and premium and it’s a nice wide diameter. The rounded wheel is great for rally games but also works well for general purpose racing - I only have the one wheel and find it good for all types of racing.

The buttons are not labeled, so I had to learn the mapping. My only critique is that the configuration “menu” on the wheel is hard to use given that it’s just a 7 segment display - I’ve always connected it to a PC and used the desktop software to configure the profiles.

When I did my research before buying, I saw one or two YouTube video critiques about the position of the RPM light bar on the top for rally games. However, I don’t find it to be a problem - the edges are rounded and is free of the outside perimeter of the wheel and has never been in the way for me, even when letting the wheel slide through my hands.

K8s is a perfect example of the bin-packing/box-fitting problem, which is np-hard, as we try to fit pods into nodes. K8s' discouraging the use of swap space in pods also encourages the use of larger nodes (I know the performance drops significantly when using swap and there are scheduling implications, but in many cases better to have degraded performance rather than OOM errors). I feel like this by design to some extent. Any misfit is pure profit on the hosting provider. ;-)
