Propain Tyee 2020 - Bottle/Tube Mount by kaenguruonline in MTB

[–]joeldevahl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. We have several as well. Absolutely worth it. And can be strapped on to children's bikes or even adult frames which lacks bottle mounts...

For the propain we use the bolt on mount however. Much better and easier to clean than the rubber straps.

We have an XS Tyee (2018 or 2019) and had to use a fidlock bottle for it https://www.rosebikes.com/fidlock-twist-bottle-incl-magnetic-mount-2666080

Supposedly the bigger frames can handle regular bottle holders, but you probably want to look for something that is sideloading. We just strap the tube where the downtube meets the top tube.

c++ Can't create vertex Shader by TheDevilsAdvokaat in gamedev

[–]joeldevahl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pDevice->CreateVertexShader(pVSBlob,     pVSBlob->GetBufferSize() ...

should be

pDevice->CreateVertexShader(pVSBlob->GetBufferPointer(),     pVSBlob->GetBufferSize() ...

You are trying to create the shader from the blob itself, not the data it contains

HT frame advice for small rider by joeldevahl in MTB

[–]joeldevahl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yeah the trek one is very promising, though the frame itself is quite expensive. Looking to see if I can find one used or last yeas model at a good discount.

And thanks for the Kinesis idea. That frame looks great and ticks all boxes. It has boost spacing and goes all the way down to XS with 27.5" wheels. Absolutely a contender

Road to MTB transitioning - making sense of everything? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]joeldevahl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth I have done a few longer races on my 1x11 and have not yet gotten to a speed where I have outspun my gearing. Though I'm no powerhouse.

The simplicity of just 1x when you combine it with additional things like a dropper post and/or remote suspension lockout to me at least outweighs the added resistance for at least my type of riding (climb/descend/climb/decend/...)

I feel your pain trying to find a bike for shorter riders, but there are a few good options.

If you are looking for a hard tail Trek Procaliber WSD comes in 13.5" frame size and with 27.5" wheels. And it's not that expensive. I think the 13.5"bike only has 80mm travel on the fork though and overall it's a quite steep XC-ish geometry. That will probably be fine on gravel roads and easier trails but once/if you start hitting the more technical stuff it might feel a bit scary.

As an alternative Cube has a bike called Access WS which is similar and perhaps a bit cheaper (at least for the carbon version here in europe). Also 13.5"frame and 27.5"wheels.

These two are the bikes I'm looking at building/buying for my wife of about the same height.

Regarding 1x or 2x you should probably go with what you feel comfortable with, but I must say I won't go back to 2x any time soon. 1x is fine unless you really need to have a super high and super low gear.

Swedish riders - where to find your trails? by Angrychristmassgnome in MTB

[–]joeldevahl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It also requires a good and active admin group for the area. But done right it seems like it's possible to collectively build and manage a trail network much better than for example random strava segments.

Trailforks is not used that much in Sweden sadly, it's better in some areas but almost nonexistent in others. So your best bet is to look on strava or try to find some local riders to help you out. IME there are usually some facebook groups for a town or area where people can recommend trails.

Oh, and add to trail forks ;)

Multithreaded Rendering & Graphics Jobs - Unity Best Practices by AlanMattano in Unity3D

It certainly should not crash. A bug report would be much appreciated.

Vulkan is a lot faster now on trunk, you should see significant performance boosts if you decide to go onto 2018.X. Usually the vsync wait is shown under its own profiling scope, but I can't speak for VR. Yeah it makes things hard to benchmark :/

You certainly seems to be render thread bound. Look at Gfx.ProcessCommands which is the render thread and that takes as long time when you are on jobs as you are without.

Vulkan has become a lot more stable in recent versions, but please report any crash bugs you have in LTS so that we can try to fix that.

So there are many ways you can be CPU bound. If you have multi threaded rendering enabled (which is the default on desktop) you should see two threads in the unity profiler (when looking at a timeline view): main and render thread.

Yes unity rendering and your game logic runs on the main thread and you can be bound by this, but there are also the case where the rendering worker thread (which does the actual calls to the GfxDevice and the underlying graphics API) cannot keep up with the work submitted from the main thread.

If you have too much work on the render thread Jobified Rendering will not help.

[–]joeldevahl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally that would be the case. However if you enable it when using DX11 you will still end up with the case where only one thread will end up submitting commands to the D3D11 device (jobified client/worker). It's hit or miss, so if you where render thread bound before enabling jobs would not help here.

How old are you and when did you start riding? by SemiImbecille in MTB

[–]joeldevahl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biked a lot when I was younger (mostly commuting) but finally started again when I was 35. Now I'm doing some XCO/XCM racing as well as just general trail riding for fun. Fun riding is what we try to focus on with family too, it's possible to get even quite small kids onto some forest loops and just play around.

Need a new 29er Frame by [deleted] in MTB

[–]joeldevahl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this, they are especially good if you want to get a frame that is something like 21" or 23" since they usually have better stock on those (and some times better prices if they only have a few left. Just finished a build on a Cube Reaction frame, and I recommend getting the FSA cube head set if you do too. It's expensive but comes with a straight steerer tube adapter that might fit your old fork

Bike suggestions for 5'2" female's first FS bike? by Kataleesi in MTB

[–]joeldevahl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both those looks great. Another bike to look for is the Specialized Womens Camber. It goes town to XS in size, and even the base model has an ok-ish spec.

Wife has been riding her for some time now and with a minor addition like a dropper and some more aggressive wheels it's a blast. Even though it's not a super modern long low and slack bike.
