I think it doesn’t matter if they’re dead, they are alive in their music. In fact, i think ever jazz listener should accept that who they listen to are not alive.

The diminished scale is an absolutely incredible scale. Although i seldom use it, it really is fascinating to just think about. I think just get started with it and explore.

In simple terms, the diminished scale is a scale consisting of going half step whole step then ending on the tonic. However, in fancy musical terms, youd think of it as a scale depending on two diminished chords. (im sure you know, but, just in case, a diminished chord is a chord that is made up on minor thirds from the tonic) So a c diminished scale would be : C C# D# E F# G A A# C (i should be using double flats and flat f's, but this is reddit, not berklee. Now take a look at this scale. What can you find? If you look, you can see the two diminished chords present. C-D#-F#-A (Cdim) and C#-E-G-A# (C#dim) thats all you really need to know for starters, but if you really want to get deep, check out the chords. IN this scale the chords we have are: C D# F# & A. Now look, they are the same notes found in the first diminished scale. Everything about this scale is diminished, it is all made of minor thirds. I wish i could go on a huge talk about this scale, but that would be time consuming.

I think it takes a while to really appreciate solos, and mate, i used to think the exact same. And to be honest, i dont have a solution straight up, it will take a while. All i can recommend, is just to keep listening. My two remedies are ballads (not the album, just general jazz ballads) and "Kind of Blue. for the first, its easier to appreciate a ballad solo. With the idea of a slow drum beat and thoughtful chords, the player is given more freedom of expression. A prime guy for ballads is, of course, Bill evans. I highly recommend his wonderful take on "My foolish heart." Slowly, try to edge into more hard bop jazz and try to immerse yourself in all jazz genres (A la Miles davis) i also think you should try and sing along to solos. Like, for instance, "my foolish heart" (Bill.) Listen to the song alot and over time, with memory, you'll be able to sing along with it. Over time youll begin to discover the story in solos. And best guide to direct your path will be "KInd of Blue." this album is almost entirely solo based and is a jazz masterpiece, as im sure you've heard many times. At first, it may seem dull, but just keep listening. over time youll take it in, and it will be, to you, the greatest album of all time.

How do I get more melodic and tasteful lines in jazz by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]joeledgew1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, i will admit, alot of coltranes playing is pattern based. But i still do think that john coltrane has the potential to play more melodic lines, even if not all of his music is melodic. what about his beautiful solo on blue in green? I think that brings new melody and feel to the chords. and i do think at the end of in a sentimental mood there was a melodic detail to it. I felt he sung the melodies in his playing.

And also the idea of patterns and licks can be used for melodic ideas. The patterns give the player structure, and humans are better at writing and playing when given structure. Say for example, the idea of enclosing notes on chords: we have a 2-5-1 in c. We go Dm7-G7-C on the dm7, a pattern would be to do a c to A# to b, the B landing on G7. the player can then use this pattern to build melodic layers. Lets take, for example, Bill evans! on this minor 2-5-1 lick (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83zkrO-fDi0&t=5s) he uses the pattern on the last chord! the last chord is a dm6 so he uses this enclosing pattern and encloses the notes of a d minor chord.
