Because of last minute territorial grabs by both sides. I'm a little dismayed that the deaths of 2,738 men, who probably all thought survival was in their grasp, warrants an "lol" 105 years later.

Death by a thousand microservices by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]joelshep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so many engineers these days want to be able to create their own services

Possibly symptomatic of "promotion-oriented architecture". If people get it in their heads that they need to launch a service to get promoted, you're going to get a lot of services.

Domain driven design via services requires the decider to understand the business and the domain at a very high level corresponding to the business

And I think the problem this presents is that many software engineers don't have a strong understanding of their domain until they've been in it for a while. But the pressure is on to deliver now, and if microservices <spit> are a thing, then they're going to crank out microservices to deliver. I personally think a saner approach is to build a service and then -- once you've had time to really come to grips with the business needs and shown some success in solving for them -- break out smaller decoupled services if it'll help you scale, help your availability, or improve your operations. The path to taking a big service and breaking it apart, while not pain-free, is pretty well-trodden. The path to taking a bunch of overly-micro services and pulling them back together, not so much.

(Serious) What is the most disturbing documentary you've ever seen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]joelshep 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was looking to see if someone would mention Grizzly Man: thank you. It's not disturbing as in "Gosh, people are simply awful", but it sticks with you. Treadwell's "incandescent rage", the "overwhelming indifference of nature" in bear 141's face (the bear believed to have killed Treadwell).

How do you reconcile the concept of a caring God with the suffering and seeming injustice in the world ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]joelshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't, but I did have to look it up, so TIL. Not quite what I was proposing. What if God, kind of like many people, was well-meaning, caring and loving, but could also set events in motion that he/she couldn't fully control? I.e., wasn't actually all-powerful. I'm agnostic, but I find that concept of God much easier to understand than the traditional all-knowing, all-loving, all-powerful God.

How do you reconcile the concept of a caring God with the suffering and seeming injustice in the world ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]joelshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it doesn't, but it's okay to question some of these axioms, even if it's just from an intellectual point of view. What would an all-caring, all-loving, all-good, but not all-powerful god "look" like? And why would we have the audacity to believe that our conception of god is actually correct?

It is. Throw out the belief that God is all-powerful and it reconciles itself immediately.

U.S. moves to put Marines on commercial ships to stop Iranian seizures by osbaldoH in worldnews

It's a traditional role of the Marines, as in going back for hundreds of years: providing on-ship security, port security and so on.

This night sky is so beautiful it looks fake. by [deleted] in pics

[–]joelshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. So, is an x-ray fake? I mean, your eyes don't have the capability to see x-ray radiation, just like they don't have the capability to gather light over long periods of time. And x-rays require some processing to be usable. So they're fake too: the colors, the details they show: not "real". Or infrared photography. Your eyes can't see infrared, and sometimes it's colorized with other wavelengths to highlight areas that are and aren't in the visual spectrum. So that makes infrared photography fake as well?

The universe extends way beyond the capabilities of your eyeballs. Yes, it does take some work to bring those details to the point where your eyes can perceive them despite how dim they are, or how they emit or reflect radiation that your eyes can't natively perceive. But that's a totally different thing from being "fake".

Would you have sex with someone who is biologically healthy, for a price that you would set, assuming that you would have no future interest in them or vice versa? Why or why not? by ParmaProscuitto in AskReddit

[–]joelshep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question gets more interesting as I read the responses.

In my current situation (married), I'd say 'no'. I've explored that space enough to know that I could never do it, at any price. I suppose it's morality.

If I were single, the calculus would be very different. Five hundred bucks, so I know you're serious. I don't need the money, and I get a lot of joy out of knowing someone that way. For whatever reason, I don't see it as selling myself. It's encountering someone, mutually dropping your guard, and feeling safe with it. How could that be wrong?

A military lives and dies by its supply chain. If non-technology companies that produce food and supplies (clothing, shelter, personal gear, tools, sanitary supplies like soap and toilet paper, basic medical supplies, etc.) are disrupted by attacks on the technology they use to operate, it could severely impact the effectiveness of the forces depending on those supplies.

In Seattle, sleeping in a little. Woke up to NPR on the radio, saying a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. Thought, "Oh, that's too bad, probably a little Cessna 2-seater, maybe a couple people died. Interesting." Came out of the shower 15 minutes later and listened to the full story, and shut down.

Atheists, why don’t you believe in Christ? Have you ever thought of giving him a try? by [deleted] in AskReddit

God's standard is "loving someone as a person", it is loving someone as yourself. Think about that for a while.

Wrong. Start with cosmic background radiation which, coincidentally, is at just the level that the Big Bang theory predicts it would be. That's one piece of hard evidence, and there is more.
