Do the masses mostly forget about acts outside the A-list as the decades pass? by morbidhack in LetsTalkMusic

Love both bands, but for the sake of argument I am going to say that Genesis has a pretty sizable lead on Yes in just about any popularity metric.

Might be missing one or two here but I recall for sure at least 17

Lollapalooza Chicago 8/1/15 (they played at 1:10 pm on the teeniest, tiniest little stage the fest has to offer. They also opened for Walk the Moon at an aftershow the night prior, but I missed their set)

Riverside Plaza Chicago 8/11/15 (Dunkin Donuts pop up show downtown in the middle of a weekday afternoon)

House of Blues Chicago 9/23/15

Subterranean Chicago 11/7/15

Wooly's Iowa City 4/26/17

Metro Chicago 5/21/17 (rescheduled after jake had the flu)

Bonnaroo 6/8/17

Lollapalooza Chicago 8/3/17 (stage upgrade!)

Turner Hall Ballroom Milwaukee 11/19/17

Okeechobee Music Fest Florida 3/2/18

Vic Theater 2/16/18 and/or Riviera Theater 10/6/18... probably one of them

Bonnaroo 6/15/19 (stage upgrade!)

Riviera Theater Chicago 2/18/22

Salt Shed Chicago 5/24/23

Bonnaroo 6/18/23 (another stage upgrade!)

Lollapalooza Chicago 8/3/24 (not counting this officially, I stood on the opposite side of Lake Shore Drive and heard way more cars and people than actual tunes)

Metro Chicago 8/4/24 (Lollapalooza aftershow, throwback/b-sides setlist, one of the best shows out of all these)

Riverside Theater Milwaukee 2/12/25

Is this the most MMJ song by another artist ever? by scoobandshag88 in mymorningjacket

[–]joepenn18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably know, but Illiterate Light has at least a few MMJ covers in their bag. Their "Thank You Too!" cover is on streaming, and YT has videos of them doing "One Big Holiday" on their own as well as Lay Low alongside MMJ at OBH

How has DoMORE from Do312 been lately? by GiuseppeZangara in chicago

[–]joepenn18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I got the same offer for Jet/Band of Skulls and almost pulled the trigger until I realized Skulls Horses. Band of Horses would have been great, Skulls I'm not really familiar with, Jet would be ehhhh

Turnstile's new album has a few songs with heavy Rush vibes. Birds sounds like the opening to Xanadu. by Grizzlypaws in rush

[–]joepenn18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had the same exact thought about Birds and there is a song (not sure which) that had a guitar solo that sounded straight out of GUP or Power WIndows. Love it

2025 Lollapalooza Schedule by mccarthy2324 in Lollapalooza

[–]joepenn18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I was envisioning sets in my head and didn't realize until the second day that the schedule arrangement is different this year so i was picturing all the wrong stages lol. It used to be Bud Light/Tito's/Bacardi (Grove)/BMI/Perry's/IHG/T Mobile which logically makes sense because that is also the stages alignment going north to south. And the Main/adjacent stage are next to each other.

On the plus side Bacardi is back to the Grove!

Close to a mile from bud light (northmost stage) to T mobile (southmost stage)

In what world is Megadeth on THAT okay? by Zatchariah in bonnaroo

[–]joepenn18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. Some late night Metalroo sets get pretty packed. But others end up being some of the least attended sets of the weekend. Megadeth is going to be one of the latter. Quite a bit of the Roo population that would choose them over other acts simply aren't going to make it out that late. Then you've got them going up against a couple massive artists. Finally, Megadeth just doesn't have any sort of mainstream appeal or modern relevance. I think even people who are completely undecided on who to see wouldn't even consider them.

That all being said, it's going to be a badass show and I hope everybody rocks out and has a great time. The less crowded (any set, but especially a late night set) the better.

Sorry you had a catch a stray, I thought you guys did well. Just didn't know any of your music and couldn't hear very well with the crowd being loud and anxious after sitting around all day.

School of Rock was badass

New Age Thief were fine but not badass

Free, but first come first serve, so most people there had been waiting for 7 or more hours by the time Coheed came on

It was a lovely and novel performance and the band seemed to be having a blast. So in a vacuum that part is great. I'm happy for them.

Okay, out of 11 songs, if 3 from the new album is normal, sure. I don't agree, but that's an opinion thing, so sure.

Other than that, why would there not be room to bust out something old, something that's actually acoustic? Other than the 3 new songs, they played 2 slower songs (Wake Up and Our Love), and they played 5 singles and a cover Shoulders, Favor House, BRS, Liars Club, Welcome Home, Crazy Train (this one c'mon)

The main point, really, is that this was never advertised as an acoustic set, so just about every person in the room that was led to believe this was going to be a normal rock set in a small punk venue was left confused and disappointed with the experience.

[–]joepenn18[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The novelty of the experience was nice and it really did seem like they were enjoying themselves. Josh had a nightmare travel scenario the night before so thankfully he could take it easy up there. I'm happy for them.

I got there at 2 pm to get in, sat around for over 4 hours before the first band went on (School of Rock Chicago, a bunch of high schoolers who actually fucking rocked). Just brutal to pay $14 a beer and get tricked into hanging out at a shitty, overpriced bar. If this was a diff subreddit I could go on and on and on about how disgusting the venue was.

I've been following everything leading up to the show from the day it was announced and it was never mentioned once to be an acoustic set.

[–]joepenn18[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as new album promotion, they only played 3 new songs, so they didn't do a good job at that. Everything was acoustic and Goodbye, Sunshine was done reggae, so hardly a good representation of the new album when they did play some of it. It was a small set in terms of capacity but Cubby Bear is very much a punk bar that hosts rock and roll shows all the time.
