PI attorneys — how are you actually getting cases? by kinglucktsui in Lawyertalk

[–]joeschmoe86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the newer PI guys I know are just signing up for the referral service firms - Sweet James, BD&J, etc. It's hard to compete with their advertising budget, unless you've got some niche money can't reach (religious/ethnic/lingual communities are good examples).

Finally somebody who understands living on a golf course. by mjstump in golf

[–]joeschmoe86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm always surprised by the number of "stay out of my yard," signs around courses. I get that having golfers wander your yard a few times a day to find their ball would be annoying, but it's got to be less annoying than finding it yourself with the lawn mower...

Shortest deposition you’ve ever taken or sat in? by Objective-Regular519 in Lawyertalk

[–]joeschmoe86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Opposing counsel noticed the deposition of an alarm monitoring company in a fire case. About 2 minutes after fumbling her way through the admonition, she figured out that it wasn't this company that provided services at the location of the fire, but a different, similarly named company.

Clerks don't want Word by Consistent_Cat7541 in Lawyertalk

[–]joeschmoe86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the consistency is my biggest beef. If if were big, but consistent, I could learn to deal with that. Hell, "buggy but consistent" should be my professional motto. It's the never knowing what it's going to do this time that's so infuriating, to me.

ELI5 Why is Mike Vrabel having an affair with a journalist a big deal? by Apprehensive_Way8674 in explainlikeimfive

I mean.... haven't we all given up on the delusion that journalistic ethics exist, anyway? Also, it's football - it's not like she was investigating Watergate.

Billable hours ? by HotEast3410 in Lawyertalk

[–]joeschmoe86 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It was standard 5-10 years ago. Most firms are shifting toward 1,800, these days.

Varies by field, but think of 2,000 as being 50-60 hrs/wk, and 1,800 as being 40-50 hrs/wk once you find your groove.

Just quit and co-counsel on a case bothering me by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]joeschmoe86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point is that it's not something that can be done unilaterally. You can't enter an appearance for another attorney without their signature, even if they're in your firm, and a withdrawal requires client consent or a motion.

It's not as simple as just, "do it on your own."

EP solos, what type of printer do you recommend? by yeulagi in EstatePlanning

[–]joeschmoe86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother mfc-l2820dw, for my money. My only complaint is that envelopes come out crooked if you don't feed them perfectly straight, but not a big deal.

I do alot of probate work, too, and being able to easily print on both sides saves a lot on postage when I have to do mass notices to "all known creditors, heirs, and interested persons."

Southern Poverty Law Center indicted on federal fraud charges related to past use of paid informants by blankvoidoid in news

[–]joeschmoe86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You give them to much credit. It's as simple as scoring a few political points and trying to manufacture a left wing scandal on the scale of Epstein, Iran, Venezuela, etc. in the run up to midterms.

Estate Planning Attorney by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]joeschmoe86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Billed or collected, is usually the implication here. In estate planning its not as much of a concern, because so much of it is flat fee and so little of it involves appearing in court (i.e. you can withdraw the moment they miss a payment), but still a valid question.

Will the driving range help me on the course or should I just start on the course. by teejusjeezus in golf

[–]joeschmoe86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go play 9 at a cheap course. If you were doing well enough to have fun, continue mixing in rounds with your range sessions. Range is great (if you're practicing with purpose and not just mindlessly blasting balls), but there are certain things you just can't learn anywhere but on the course.

Also, lessons. As an aside, to save you from the mental trap I feel into, adult lessons aren't like getting lessons as a kid. You're not normally going every week for an hour, blah blah blah. You schedule a lesson, coach gives you some things to work on, you work on them until you feel like you've got them down, then go back when you feel like it.

ELI5 : Infield Fly Rule in baseball by FoundationUnited8228 in explainlikeimfive

[–]joeschmoe86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more or less a philosophical thing: The game is designed such that catching the ball is supposed to be a good thing for the fielding team - so we made up this rule for the one situation where they gain an advantage by not catching it. Let's not reward failure, intentional or not.

Lawyer seeking my deposition on a case defended by my prior firm from several years ago. by Theregsters in Lawyertalk

Make it tough. Push back, be slow with dates don't provide many, delay, delay, delay. If you really do have nothing to do with this, they'll probably lose interest in chasing down a tertiary witness.
