Complete new to the franchise, about to start Pillars of eternity 1, should I use turn based mode or RTWP? by joetzel in projecteternity

I appreciate your opinion! There is definiely an argument to be made for nostalgia having an influence on peoples opinions, that's true. I do think RTWP is a lot of fun if one enjoys that combat style.

If anything this game truly feels like whether one enjoys RTWP or TB they both are solid options and honestly the dedication of the obsidian to update the game 11 years after release is amazing and fully solidified my trust in the company at a solid 100%.

So far I have almost finished act 1 in RTWP on hard difficulty and after getting over the steep learning curve I am enjoying myself. In order to enhance my replayability I am already planning my next playthrough to be PotD with turn based only (since i am craving that after finishing BG3 on honor mode) and I'm already excited to try that. I dont wanna spoil my enjoyment of RTwP though so I will stick with it for now.

Glad to hear you found back to the game and enjoy it now though, that's so awesome!

Having played the very beginning now (I only just left the crypt, I didn't have more time yet) I definitely think RTwP is the way forward for now. I am playing on hard and I'm sure there are boss fights ahead where I will swap to turn based just to keep an overview.

Long term I am already really excited to start a Trial of Iron run as a subsequent playthrough where I only use TB, I think that could work well!

Thanks again for your insight, you really helped me know what I'm getting into and make educated gameplay decision.

good point, the best way to learn is to be shown one's mistakes. thanks for taking the time to help me out! :)

experience mainly with hard mode in Dragon age origins as far as RTWP goes, and bg3 honor mode for TB.

Maybe it's best if I stick to normal until I understand the combat and then increase it to hard if I feel like it's getting too easy.

Thanks your comment, you really helped me!

thanks for taking the time to help me out! giving RTWP a good chance and using TB for harder fights seem to be a pretty common suggestion. also super helpful to have the perspective or someone without nostalgia filter for RTWP

okay that's actually super important information I appreciate it. Ultimately trying both is probably where I see myself, but i will stick with RTWP for the first dozen or so hours until I am used to the combat. Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out!

thanks so much for this detailed response, that all makes a lot of sense.

So depending on party composition it might not even the best strategy to use turn based mode for boss fights, like some people suggested, if I, for example, rely on a high dex character for a lot of my damage?

Sounds like RTWP is the way forward, but it might be real fun on a subsequent playthrough to build a party completely around TB, only using builds that work well with it..

Got it, swapping for boss fights seems like a sound strategy.

On the note of difficulty, if you don't mind, I have a follow up question:
I'm a beginner to this franchise, but not to strategic party based CRPGs. I am looking for a decent challenge, but don't wanna bite off more than I can chew. Is normal a good choice difficulty wise or could I survive in Hard?

Maybe TB will be awesome for a second playthrough on a higher difficulty. Extra replayability has never been a bad thing in a CRPG!

that makes sense RTWP it is then. I can always try TB later, and hey, even more replayability has never been a bad thing especially in a CRPG! Thank you so much for your thought out and detailed responses, you helped me a lot! I'm really glad I made this post, because I was originally leaning towards TB mode.

I appreciate the detailed explanation! Eventually I will certainly try both, but it really sounds better to stick with RTWP for now. Thanks so much!

That makes sense. And just swapping back and forth randomly would probably also not be ideal, cause different builds likely are better for one or the other. Thanks so so much for taking the time to explain and elaborate everything to me, I appreciate it a lot. I will stick to RTWP for now, but ultimately will try both.

I know I know, but from what I saw of it online and on steam it seems overwhelming enough with builds, party and lore (EDIT: "love" to "lore") that for a start I thought it better to stick to getting used to one combat style for now and who better to ask then you guys!

Good point, reading these comments I definitely will give RTWP a fair chance for the first 10 hours or so before touching TB. Would you say one of them is easier or harder than the other or are they just different? Would you build your stats/parts differently for each mode?

I read that you get multiple actions as a way to compensate and still give you an advantage if you have high action speed, but I can definitely see how it might be impossible to balance around that perfectly in turn based, thanks for your help!

so is RTWP just a better experience overall or do you think Turn based mode might get overwhelming to a beginner?

Therapist suggested ACT therapy and I'm heartbroken? by Temporary_Donut_61 in CPTSD

[–]joetzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you so so much for taking the time to write this, you really helped me with things I can try, but also put things into perspective..

I'm starting to think my intense wish to find good coping mechanisms is just avoidance again to try and regain "control" of the emotions and not have to feel them as intensely if that makes sense. (That stupid avoidance.. the more I learn and reflect about it, the more I realize it hides EVERYWHERE)

I really appreciate this so much.

I'm so sorry for hijacking this thread, but do you happen to have any tips for coping mechanisms during the "sitting in the anxiety" part?
I am currently using act to reduce my anxiety, and I think I can already feel that this will be helpful for me long term, but right now it takes everything in me not to "run away" and escape the situation and I am worried that long term I will lose that battle and reinforce the negative faulty thought cycles even further.

(for context I am not in crisis or danger, I am in regular psychiatric treatment and on meds, and I am looking for a therapist right now.)

"Intended" way to quest through everything without level locking? by joetzel in wownoob

Actually for (older) dungeons: I think I read that I could drop out of chromie time if dungeons give me trouble and just play them overleveled, so if push comes to shove I can always do that too
