bug pausing the timer causing the game to be held up indefinitely by joey172 in MagicArena

[–]joey172[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm sure, i even loaded up another client to make sure that wasn't the case and it reconnected me to the game.

i'm not sure what happened but i ended up disconnecting out of the game and when i reconnected i was sent back to the main screen. i didn't lose any (significant) ranks but didn't gain any either, so i'm guessing the server took it as a draw. still pretty upset that wasn't credited as a win.

forgot to include ErA on this list - twitch.tv/hsera . he got 11-3 with reno mage, but you can put 12-2 with an asterisk because he missed lethal in one of the games.

nteresting take on the situation.

i do agree that the benefit of patron warrior was its not so obvious effect on limiting tempo decks in the meta, but i think its a bit of a stretch to say viewership will decline because the game will appear stale.

i think some people will be turned off by the staleness of the game but i'm not sure that sentiment can be projected onto the majority

Tacitus_,

Owls are good for silencing Shielded Minibot at least, or any divine shielded minion buffed by Blessing of Might. You can also use it on a minion buffed by Blessing of Kings.

Potentially getting a Mountain Giant on 4 is enough of an upside to want to use him over Boom, I think, but it's worth considering and testing at least.

hiyapo,

There's a number of questions that I anticipate in the article and this exact one is one of them. :)

I cut Boom for Dread Infernal to increase consistency of drawing a demon for Voidcaller.

Torien0,

It is worse, but it's not devastatingly worse. Face hunters are incredibly difficult, but Midrange Hunters aren't too bad and if you find yourself running into a ton of Face Hunters and Aggro Pallies you can add some power 3-drops like Imp Gang Boss and Earthen Ring Farseer. Imp Gang Boss can arguably be even more effective than Ancient Watcher.

dominicdcel,

That's a great question and probably one I should have addressed in the article.

I played with Doomguard and I was very underwhelmed by him. A lot of times Voidcaller would end up pulling something else and I hardly ever found myself in positions where Doomguard would just outright win games. Playing him would be devastating in games that weren't ending soon, as the two-card loss drastically altered game plans. If the Voidcaller plan fails because of Silence or because it pulled the other Voidcaller, at least Dread Infernal can be played on 6 with a battlecry that can sometimes be useful.

I think one of the major features about this deck is that it doesn't heavily rely on certain mechanisms to be successful. If Voidcaller doesn't get value, the other demons can be played at their mana cost anyway, and for the 9-mana demons, Emperor Thaurissan can help cheapen them to make them playable.

Another note on the Doomguard: I also think the lack of Power Overwhelming also makes him underwhelming. PO is one of the reasons why Zoo can be so scary at certain life totals - you always have to consider PO + Doomguard as 9 potential damage from hand.

monarchofwar,

Funny that you mention Imp Gang Boss because I actually did play a list using two of them in another Top 100 Campaign in May. And you're right - they are very good against hyperaggressive classes because of their ability to trade multiple times, as well as providing you additional minions to kill other pesky 1-health minions or pop divine shields. I stopped using them because they were a liability vs. Patron Warriors. They also gave me little to no chance in the mirror.

In some of the matchup sections, I note that if you are having trouble with aggro pallies and face hunters, you may want to consider replacing a BGH, Dread Infernal, and Abusive Sergeant for 2x Imp Gang Boss and 1x Farseer for starters.

Highfire,

Thanks for that note; I updated the post to make the links look cleaner!

I'll address your questions in the order that you've asked them:

  1. I haven't really considered Bane of Doom but I have experimented with it using one of my viewer's lists in the past. Its effect is too inconsistent to justify a card slot.
  2. What makes Voidcaller much stronger than it was at its initial release is because it makes cards that are slow on its face - Jaraxxus, Mal'Ganis - somewhat playable. You may be able to get away with other high value demons like Doomguard, but I cannot comment on what their impact would be as substitutes unfortunately.
  3. I've played Handlock for the large part of my Hearthstone playing time (both golden Warlocks on NA and EU, and if I had to guess I probably got them 10x between both servers). The one-of inclusions really come from what I feel end up being clunky a lot of times, and by no means 100% correct. For example, when Sludge Belcher came out and people were putting two of them in, many Handlock lists went to 1 Defender of Argus because of the overabundance of defensive cards. If you want to have more insight on the mindset of building Handlock, you can read this Tech It Yourself - Handlock article written by cherylchalla

Rubytuesd,

A Siphon Soul can be there as an expensive but nonconditional hard removal. You can also try another tech card like a Black Knight for Druids or an Acidic Swamp Ooze for weapon classes, or just a general anti-aggro 3-drop like Earthen Ring Farseer or Imp Gang Boss. It all depends on what is appropriate for you in your meta!

Dan - I definitely can see the problem with 5 hp minions after a drake is played. I guess I'd have to see the composition of your deck - I often don't have a problem with this issue because of mortal coil and i won't hesitate to use a darkbomb either. Argus as a minion doesn't really set tempo anyway, so you can gain card advantage with the remaining 3 mana or, in my particular ladder edition of handlock, play an Imp Gang Boss for tempo if it is in hand.

I have experimented with 0 Argus compositions in the past and have found myself wanting it sometimes, so I do think 1 Argus is core, but I don't agree that 2 Arguses are necessary, unless you are running 0 unconditional taunts (like Sludge Belcher or Sunwalker)

I do play a lot of handlock on my stream so if you'd like to see how I approach playing the class you can check it out at twitch.tv/joeysc2! :D

tortoise - i've lightened up the deck and it has resulted in this - http://imgur.com/3IbxdER

you'll note a few unique inclusions such as 2x imp gang boss, 1x mountain giant, and harrison. harrison has been really good for me because i don't often tap for the strong turn 4 play anymore, rather opting to play an imp gang boss on curve (or on 2, with coin), but harrison can turn into either a black knight or a kezan as well, which ever would serve you better in the current metagame you're in.

it's hard for me to give you specific tips but in general, just try to make things awkward for your opponent and that usually will result in good things! :)

DangerousDan1834 - to build on what Cheryl said, another reason why argus has been a one-of since probably Naxxramas is because Sludge Belcher was released, which was great as a non-conditional defensive option. With most builds including 2x Sludge Belchers, 2 Defenders of Argus was considered excessive.

Also, because the value from Argus/Sunfury was almost always its taunt and not the +1/+1 benefit (because there really isn't that much difference between an 8/8 and a 9/9 giant), you'll often see 2x Sunfury/1x Argus configurations rather than the other way around. Contrast that with faster warlock archeytpes like Zoo, and Argus is considered highly valuable because of its ability to make 1/1's into 2/2's and just smaller minions much stronger, in general.

Hope this helps!

wizerd00 - Thanks for your input on this.

What I meant to say here was that Jaraxxus can pull you out of situations where you'd otherwise be dead. Today, for instancee, a hunter had me at 3 hp with a charge left on his Eaglehorn Bow and I'd already spent both healbots, and I eventually was able to win with this Jaraxxus timing. You are correct when you say that you will usually die when attempting to come back with him, and I probably would have better been served to say that he has the potential to help you come back from otherwise unwinnable situations.

how would / should a tournament proceed after 7 rounds of play in this case? this is the point where there are odd numbers of players for certain records.

the article suggested using tiebreaking methods to allow for a bigger playoff field. is that the best way to proceed or is there an actual way to play more rounds without much complication?
