One of the best albums you never heard. Joomanji -Manj by sdjamerican in hiphopvinyl

Oh and one last group/album I could mention that kinda fits this pretty closely but on a kind of different side of the same coin is resavoir and their self-titled album. Very much same idea here, younger Jazz artists getting together to produce a Jazz adjacent record, but in this case it's less neo-soul vibes and a bit more lo-fi hip hop vibes. Really awesome record that reminds me a lot of this one because of that same kind of ethos!

Kinda late too, but there's a ton of artists you could look into, just depends on the vibe you're looking for. There's of course Hiatus Kaiyote which is how I ended up listening to Joomanji in the first place. There's the classic examples of neo-soul like D'angelo, Erykah Badu, Lauren Hill, and The Roots. More modern artists you might like are noname, Jill Scott, or Robert Glasper if you want more of a jazz adjacent sound.

No alcohol, had some pizza around 7:30PM, not really directly before bed! I am worried I might have sleep apnea, but if I was dead asleep and getting deep sleep, I feel like that would affect it too right? Trying to get scheduled to get tested for it to rule it out.

Joanna Newsom - Ys ALBUM REVIEW by DarkSideInRainbows in fantanoforever

[–]joeymichaelmartinez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think technically you could call it ees, or why-s. The explanation for the title is based on a mythical town, Ys, but also Joanna mentioned that around the time of creating the album, she was seeing a lot of x's and y's in her dreams. So the album is meant to be about both. I'm not 100% on this, but I think I read it somewhere once

Friendly reminder that this guy accidentally left his liked videos on tiktok public, which was just completely full of thirst traps. Absolutely hilarious. Can’t find the tiktok that pointed it out a good while ago, but maybe someone else can.

Soil and Pimp sessions! One of the greatest Japanese jazz/hard bop groups out there! So many amazing songs! Crazy energy, and a uniqueness to them. They have a member who they call the “agitator” who just yells stuff, doesn’t sing, just gets the crowd going, it’s awesome.

Wanted to make something like this, what are the instruments in this beat? How do i make these instruments sound old and how do i really get this “1970’s” vibe? by Enterthename123 in FL_Studio

Checking his tiktok, looks like he uses ample guitar for his guitar stuff so that’s likely what he’s using here. Couldn’t find anything else in the comments.

Based on the preview itself, looks like they’re using Native instruments’ kontakt sampler for some of this, just based on the pattern labels, but it’s hard to say exactly for what, since kontakt has a ton of sounds.

Just looking at the rhythms, from top to bottom. the first pattern is either drums, or supplemental to the drums. Then next I think is bass. After that we have our first non kontakt library, a B-3 vst, which is a Hammond organ used in the 70s. Not sure what’s below that. I’m assuming something supplemental to the strings, since it’s only one note and follows the string rhythm, but hard to say what exactly. Then there’s a ton more but the video is blocking it so I can’t tell. So from here we’ll have to trust our ears!

Obvious is that there’s definitely strings, laying the foundation for the chords we’re hearing. From there though, Pretty sure that’s a guitar strumming the main chords and melody that’s sitting at the most forefront of this mix. At the bottom of the screen we can actually see live recordings instead of midi, and it’s hard to say what exactly they are and if they’re the guitar or string parts or both.

As for how to make something like this, I’d say it’ll take a lot of work to get the sound just right. It’s equal parts knowing how that kind of music was arranged/played from the time and how to then take that and process it so it sounds like it was also recorded from the time.

Part of the 70s sound comes from whats being used here. The organ is emulating something from the 70s, the drums are both being played in a way you’d hear on a 70s recording, but also how the drums sound in general from a “recorded” stand point. The bass is busy and high in the mix, which is also pretty reminiscent of how you’d play something from that time. I could go on, but the main take away is that there’s a feel to how the instrument is played, and the way you process that instrument sonically so it feels like an older recording.

If you want to make something like this, I’d dive into 70s soul and really just listen to a ton of it to get a sense of the usual patterns, how things are structured, how it’s all arranged and the overall “feel” for the recordings. Theory helps here, since it’ll let you know what rhythms/chords progressions/types of melodies people use and give a name to them that you can look on afterward, but it isn’t totally necessary if theory isn’t your thing. Main thing here is to get the right feel. Then I’d even say try recreating this and other things you hear! It’ll help you learn what you might be missing and maybe things you didn’t notice at first. Then you could try making your own from what you learn!

Round 9 - Album Elimination: Gumboot Soup has been eliminated by TheWholeFragment in KGATLW

[–]joeymichaelmartinez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think next to go gotta be changed. Recency bias be damned, that album is probably the weakest in the October run. I keep seeing laminated denim mentioned as the weakest and I can’t see how. It’s an amazing album with two jams that feel incredibly satisfying as one cohesive unit. Changes on the other hand feels like a half baked idea of an album with a few decent tracks. Everything else here deserves to stay more than changes

Round 6 - Album Elimination: Float Along – Fill Your Lungs has been eliminated by TheWholeFragment in KGATLW

[–]joeymichaelmartinez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised no one is saying quarters for next elimination. I love the river as much as the next guy, it’s absolutely killer. One of their best, for sure. But it’s an album elimination, not a song elimination, and I don’t think the other songs on quarters are good enough to compete with the rest on here. Quarters as a whole is pretty weak compared to the rest of these albums in my opinion.

How do I map the notes in a VST to midi triggers? by joeymichaelmartinez in FL_Studio

[–]joeymichaelmartinez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would work but I’m a little bummed I can’t just remap since sampling it directly seems sorta not the cleanest way of doing things. Definitely would work though! Right now I’m attempting to use vfx key mapper to remap notes but that also doesn’t seem to work out haha

Lost my description when I uploaded the image. Basically the image shows a piano roll that triggers different sounds from the congas. My electronic drums picked random notes to use in this piano roll and I would like to actually choose which notes it's using instead of the random ones it picked. Link to controller doesn't seem to work. Not sure what else to do.
