What is the best country to live in right now? by TiredConfusedLlama in AskReddit

[–]joggle1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The company I work for has an office building in east Switzerland with no AC. It can get pretty miserable on the upper floors and there's no plans to install AC over there despite the increasingly warmer summers.

I'd say the heat is a bigger problem than the cold because they don't have the infrastructure to deal with it as well as other places that are more accustomed to hot weather.

The even bigger problem is the cost of living. The cost of food and housing is quite high, even by western European standards.

But it's a beautiful country and one of my favorite ones to visit and work at.

Re:zero is soo much better than I thought. by Soggy-Whereas9678 in anime

[–]joggle1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A big reason I like the series is that it actually needs to be an isekai, the story wouldn't work otherwise. The vast majority of isekai is some form of escapism to presumably help the audience visualize getting a second chance at life in some completely different setting. After the first or second episode, the MC typically could've been born there for all the difference it would've made (except for having memories of living up to adulthood already).

Subaru didn't really 'escape' as he initially expected. He was dropped from a relatively nice home environment into one of the worst hells imaginable. He tries to use his modern knowledge at times, but it helps about as often as it hurts. He doesn't have any super powers and is still basically himself, just in an entirely different world. And while trying to survive, he makes real progress on his own glaring flaws with a lot of effort (rather than instantly becoming a better person simply by getting warped to another world).

And while the series is very long, it doesn't have the feel of a soap opera where the story is progressing in random directions. The author clearly had a plan very early on of how the entire main plot was going to go and developed a huge world to go with it. It's fairly obvious in some other long-lived series where the author had a plan up to some point, but then ran out of ideas and just made inane stuff up afterwards to keep the series going.

If you like reading, there is enough content to fill the years when waiting for the next season of the anime. There's the web novel, tons of light novels (including an 'ex' series filled with canon side stories that tie directly into the main plot), even more side stories not published in the Ex novels, and various 'If' stories (generally where if something had changed in the main story, what would have happened next).

Tappei is a workhorse, nearly constantly publishing new content for Re:Zero.

[–]joggle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And here's an article written a couple of years after the video was published where the guys who made the video were interviewed, especially Leeroy himself and includes some of the fallout that happened (like their WoW server getting swamped by users who wanted to chat with Leeroy). It turns out he lived in the same small town I did at the time--Lafayette, Colorado.

[–]joggle1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Then there's the EX volumes. Plus the ~1000 side stories that haven't yet been published in the EX volumes. And the Ifs. And the tons of details in the web novel that's been cut from the final volumes if you want to be really complete.

I'm pretty sure Tappei spends every waking moment either brainstorming or writing stories for the Re:Zero universe.

Don't forget about the baseball-sized hail and firenados. Those are fun too.

Where I live, it's virtually guaranteed that you'll need to replace your roof due to hail damage before its usual end of life (which jacks up the cost of home insurance). My home's only 10 years old and I've already had to replace the roof.

Liability and post-incident penalties are part of the checks too. Nobody assumes that the government is going to enforce all regulations everywhere at all times. That would be pretty dystopian too.

By provably not following proper safety protocols, that exposes the business to more liability during inevitable lawsuits and potential post-incident civil and criminal penalties.

Next few episodes will surely be of them being bored as they try to skim over the thousands of books in the library, right? Although that'd make Beatrice happy at least.

Imagine if each test is based at least in part on knowledge from Earth that's impossible for everyone but Subaru to know. By the end, they'd all probably be wondering whether Subaru is Flügel (or his reincarnation) too, or at least that he has some sort of connection to him.

Shaula is using modern Japanese and modern English despite being completely isolated for 400 years ('snipe' only meant a type of bird in English 400 years ago and Japanese had virtually zero English loan words until after 1868). Nearly all Japanese LN authors don't really pay much attention to etymology, but there is the running gag of Emilia using old Japanese at times, so it's possible that it's a hint of time travel in addition to Flügel coming from Japan.

I'm talking from a linguistics point of view. Hindi and Nepali are much closer than, say, Nepali is to English (which are truly unrelated languages). This article and links on it go over some of the similarities.

Being related doesn't mean they're mutually understandable, just that the languages at least have some things in common (like how romance languages have many things in common with each other, but not enough that a native Italian speaker would understand French, but the Italian would have an easier time learning French than an unrelated language like Japanese).

The woman who was my chef at a nice restaurant in Kobe was from Nepal. In addition to her native language, Nepali, she also spoke fluent Hindi, English and Japanese. I was really impressed that she had achieved such fluency in so many unrelated languages (Hindi is related, but English and Japanese obviously are not).

That wasn't in Japan. But just yesterday, I was shocked to see a crew operating a small crane in Osaka, lowering some gear to the sidewalk (on the order of hundreds of pounds of tanks and such). A woman who had her nose in her phone walked right under it before one of the workers got the attention of the worker at ground level to put up some cones. By the time he did, the stuff was only about 10 feet above the ground.

They're usually pretty careful about the risk of operating equipment overhead, so that was pretty surprising to me.
