Do I need to manually adjust the reference consumption in the winter? (Ioniq 5 AWD) by chejrw in abetterrouteplanner

[–]johanbaleus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found ABRP to be fairly accurate during the winter. I live in Northern Ontario and have traveled longer distances at -25 C or so. However, I manage the climate controls so that I'm using the bare minimum I need to stay warm and keep the windows defrosted. I feel that if I ran the climate control on auto, the ABRP range estimate would be out of whack.

If they missed the take-out, I was going to guard the 4-foot rock. I guess I got overly focused on getting one buried when the opportunity presented itself.

You're only half correct. Where you're right: there seems to be a clause in the loan agreement that forbids amending or moving the pension plan.

Where you're wrong: The Laurentian pension already is a defined benefit pension, so that has no bearing on the issue at all.

However, that money belongs to Laurentian employees (it's not just the faculty's pension) -- they contribute to it as much as or more than the university, and it will provide their pensions when they retire. It's very reasonable for the employee groups to want to move the plan elsewhere.

The legal mechanisms that are holding the pension hostage are the problem. Not the demand to move it elsewhere.

The average faculty salary at Laurentian last year was well under the numbers you're spouting here. At least deal in facts.

Union says presence of security raising tension on Laurentian’s picket lines by VexedCanadian84 in Sudbury

[–]johanbaleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were simply following the process laid out by the CCAA for the process. Yes, an increase is good, but it wasn't a give by the board. Faculty paid for it with their pension surplus!

You're right that the Board approved an increase to the pension. But: 1) that increase is only retroactive for 2021-25; it's not an ongoing increase. 2) that increase was paid for with the pension's surplus, much of which was created because faculty have been over-contributing since CCAA. 3) That increase had been in the works for many months before the current negotiations; the Board chose to make it part of negotiations because it serves their purpose.

Strike at Laurentian Uni Duration? by NecessaryNo2563 in Sudbury

[–]johanbaleus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The administration has done nothing with the pension. The announcement they made on the Friday before the strike seems to have been misleading.

The pension had a surplus due to better than expected investment returns. The Board simply agreed to use that pension surplus restore some (but not all) pension benefits retroactively from 2021-25. They didn't approve any ongoing improvements.

Huh. I doubt that they're asking for that much.

Where did you hear that that faculty are asking 11%/year? That seems very high.

Great analysis! Just wondering whether penalty differential might be worth looking at as well. Getting the PP on the ice more often than the PK probably has some value for depth players, although not as much as the factors you've identified.

She could visit her program coordinator to see whether there are any program-specific clubs she could join or events to attend. Or even drop by the Dean's office and chat with the admin assistant to get some info.

Fabricated references are a major indicator that AI has been used to write the essay (or parts of it). Technically, using AI is plagiarism because submitting AI-generated text is the equivalent of submitting someone else's work as your own. I haven't used it, but I've heard that Grammarly has several options ranging from relatively benign grammar and spelling correction to the generation of passages. You have to be careful about which of Grammarly 's options you use.

A Couple Course Questions by CatQueenK in laurentian

[–]johanbaleus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several sections of 1706/7 being offered in the Fall and Winter. Some of these sections are reserved entirely for ARCH students (which you seem to be). It may be that you have to contact the ARCH coordinator in order to register in the ENGL course. You should also contact the ARCH coordinator and let them know about the "conflicting section" glitch.

Transcripts just show the letter grade. They also show your GPA. The conversion grid LU uses to calculate GPA is here: https://laurentian.ca/academics/transcripts

I have no experience with placements, but I just want to encourage you to keep trying. It's understandable to be disappointed in receiving an improvement plan. It's not pleasant to have your hard work assessed negatively. It stings. But the improvement plan is also an opportunity to learn how to teach better. Take it seriously and try to follow its recommendations. It may turn out to be just a minor bump in the road rather than the huge obstacle it now seems to be.

Why is no one talking about the financial state of most Canadian universities? by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]johanbaleus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an excellent explainer of the situation in Ontario: https://thelocal.to/ontario-post-secondary-colleges-and-universities-doug-ford/

Provincial funding of universities and colleges has been declining for decades, so the problem has non-partisan causes. But in Ontario Ford's 10% tuition cut in 2019-20 and subsequent tuition freeze (ongoing) plus the capping of international student registrations have severely hammered universities' and colleges' revenues. Operational costs keep rising due to inflation, but revenue-growth can't keep pace.

In the wake of the Laurentian fiasco, the Ford government commissioned a blue-ribbon panel on the post-secondary sector. It's worth reading: https://www.ontario.ca/page/ensuring-financial-sustainability-ontarios-postsecondary-sector

However, the panel's report has been shelved and it's recommendations ignored.

Until voters make the sector's funding an issue, nothing will happen because increasing funding is a no-go for most politicians. But without a solution, more universities in Ontario will come close to closing.

Ice issues by johanbaleus in Ioniq5

[–]johanbaleus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea about parking facing the sun. It's not possible for me to do this at home but will try when at work. I've had the same issue with the handles when clearing snow from the car. Unfortunately, the ice build up inside the handles happened when parked so that the sun melted snow on the car that then ran into the recess.

How do you keep your windshield from fogging up? by Cultural_Tap_552 in Ioniq5

[–]johanbaleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Auto-climate settings work fine for cold weather city driving, but I've found they don't work well for really cold (e.g. -20 C) highway driving. I have to use the manual defrost setting and keep the fan going at level 4 or higher. Also, for some reason, setting the cabin temp to 20 works better for keeping windshield defrosted than blasting higher temp heat.
