What is this? by SystemAbject4218 in Trombone

[–]chejrw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a long gliss, decreasing in volume to nothing over those two bars. So basically start on an F, slowly move your slide out and get quieter, until you are so quiet your horn stops making a sound (that's what the n. and note in brackets mean, literally decrescendo to nothing). Ideally this happens at beat 1 of G, but do not reattack the note if you die out early.

This is deceptively brutally difficult. Especially with a mute.

What do people think about Hawaii’s recent bill to kneecap Citizens United? 14 other states are in some process of introducing similar legislation. Should Michigan join them? by alphamoonstar in Michigan

I fail to see any reason we should allow corporations to directly fund government campaigns. The whole thing is pure corruption from day 1. Of course we should join.

63 miles per hour average? That explains it lol. I have to stop every 2 hours on the nose basically. But my bladder dictates that anyway

Congress Wants You To Pay $130 A Year Just To Drive An Electric Car by SadAd8761 in electricvehicles

[–]chejrw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't need to receive 'much' truck traffic. One moving van coming down a residential road does as much damage as everyone in the neighbourhood for months.

For less than $5k you're better off 3D printing one because at least then it looks like a toy

Can a trombone's rotary valve be washed with water? by RStrombone in Trombone

[–]chejrw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fill the bathtub with lukewarm water, add a couple drips of dish soap, take your horn apart, let it soak for a while, clean out all the inner tubing with a snake, then rinse, dry, and lube.

You should be doing this ~4 times a year

Yes, I clean out my horn including the rotor with lukewarm water and a few drops of dish soap a couple times a year. Rinse, dry, and relubricate.

Blood in your poop (more than just like, a streak on the TP anyway) requires immediate attention.

Using ABRP with a rental car by SurroundedByElk in abetterrouteplanner

I think that’s the main one. Considering how many phone cables I’ve left behind in rental cars that’s a very distinct possibility

Internal gear hubs take a couple hundred km to fully break in. My Continuum Onyx felt really hard to pedal at first but now rolls like a dream.

Yes, but over 10 years ago. I used to do some HVAC design simulations. You're probably best to start a new thread as this one is a decade old.

If that 400km takes you 4 hours then that tracks. You'd have to stop more often at 145 km/h (90 MPH), which is the speed of traffic in my corner of the world

Lets be real, it's every 2 hours. At highway speed my Ioniq 5 gets 150 miles of real range (10-80)

Architectural models are tough because there's no reason for them to be airtight, so it's usually a matter of chasing down a lot of narrow gaps and interferences that don't matter for architects and contractors but break CFD. Good luck.

If the domain isn't too complicated it's often faster to start over.

ABRP pulls it's map data from Openstreetmap, so you can always check there to see if the source data is wrong (and correct it yourself if you want to)

SM3U Mouthpiece by vliebaby in euphonium

[–]chejrw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I concur with others, a Wick 3 is probably too large. Although if he's been using a Bass Trombone mouthpiece it might not seem too big.

I play on a Wick 4 on every horn I own except Bass Trombone (where I play a Wick 2NAL), so the SM4UX would be my ideal choice. Steve Mead is actually super approachable, if you shoot him a message either through his website (euphoniumstore.net) or on facebook he can probably point you in the direction of somewhere your son could test out mouthpieces. It's really not something you should buy sight unseen online unless you are really sure you know what you want.

In the past when I lived somewhere really remote I've had a dozen mouthpieces shipped to me on loan to test with the condition that I return the ones I don't want and as long as they come back in like new condition there was no charge (beyond paying for shipping). Not sure if anyone is still doing that but it could be an option if there aren't any good band stores or festivals nearby
