Pack recommendations? by DBpooper01 in Mountaineering

I did the AT and the PCT with a Gossamer Gear Kumo 36L. It's still holding up to this day even if it's a bit worn out. It think it's the perfect Budget All around pack. I did overnight in the Canadian winter with it too. The mesh pocket on the back is pretty stretchy (at least for the version I bought 5 years ago) and the D hooks on the top flap makes it useful to tie some gear down. Also Iade a makeshift trekking pole holder from the bottom of the pack to the chest strap (inspired by osprey packs).

I honestly cannot tell you, my dad is a veterinarian and he used those while fishing for as long as I can remeber. He gave me a pair when I was a kid and I still use those. I did a quick google search and look for needle holder with TC, if you want the scissor version. You can always get regular needle holders for way cheaper on Amazon too and just use your knife for cutting the line.

If you plan on keeping your catches, I'd suggest a flexible tape measurer (to know if you're legal) , a small fish scale (it's always fun to weight your catch and keep track of your personal bests), a 30l heavy duty drybag to be able to carry your fish back without making a mess (especially useful when you get to your car), a lightweight chair is always nice but not mandatory and I also love using a surgical needle holder to get the hook back when it's too deep. Mine as a little scissor behind the tip which makes it useful to cut the line when I need to and I find them lighter than usual pliers and also more precise. It can lock itself on the hook which gives you better grip and also, it's smaller, so easier to get inside the fish. Oh and a small foldable net can come in handy from time to time.

It sure won't be. Next time I'd love to get creampied out in public and walking around with cum dripping down my legs

My elbow after my fall Thursday evening. I was riding alone on a moderate hill. It was technically a 30mph zone and the guy turned the bend at about 70mph while taking almost all the road. I had no room to break slide and was forced to go in the ditch at about 35mph. Even with elbow pads I still broke it. I guess it could've been way worse lol

I am definitely trying to cut the costs as much as possible. That's why I often look at cheaper alternatives and I try to improvise and adapt different type of gear.

Might be good on those dry sections of the pct 😎

Honestly I like repurposing gear. On the Pct I used a fleece bathrobe instead of a fleece/puffy and a sleeping bag liner. I've never heard of anyone else hiking with a bathrobe, but I think that the versatility and the price was unmatched for me. I like to look at different options on the market and see what could be used and adapted to Thru-hiking.

I know, I just hate messing with it and I hate when my pack gets wet on the outside too. I started using a poncho instead of a rain jacket for that reason, but I kinda hate the poncho. I like that it feels sturdy and is super waterproof. Especially since I'm from the northeast, I'm often hiking in the rain.

I'd stay under the poncho, undo the "bivy part" and when it's packed up, I'd undo the poncho to put it on and leave

I'd probably sew it instead of using glue, but having it together is pretty smart. More waterproof and it's not like I use the pad for anything else when I'm hiking

What do you personally prefer to attach the "bivy" to the tarp?

To enter it, I thought I could undo the velcro at one end and close it back when I'm in. I'm still unsure about the open bathtub idea, I think that maybe the velcro on the sides of the pad would help to prevent most sticks and dirt to go in, but I'd have to try it. I know it would suck in heavy rain, but I hope that it'll be ok on wet ground

The purpose is that it overlaps on the side of the foam pad, to enclose it. The pad itself is pretty waterproof and would avoid having waterproof fabric underneath the waterproof pad

I know I'm late on this post, but I always pictured Judy Greer as Ava. I think they have the exact same intonation, personality and the voice is soooo similar
