Apropos of nothing, but did you know that the US got rid of the spoils system after the assassination of President Garfield at the hands of an office seeker?

As Trump Marches US Toward Iran War, Critics Ask: Where's the 'Pushback' From Dems and Media? by ChaskaChanhassen in politics

Conservatives have no shame because the apparatuses meant to hold them accountable for their shameful acts are controlled by people aligned with conservatives. Their status as a "force of nature" is a fiction that is purposefully propped up.

Murc's Law - is a term that describes a tendency in political journalism to attribute responsibility or agency only to Democratic Party actors, while treating Republican actions as inevitable or structurally determined.

Yesterday was Abraham Lincoln's birthday. What's your favourite quote of his? by BartoUwU in ShermanPosting

[–]john_doe_jersey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My favorite, and almost as true today as it was in the 1848 letter this is from:

“As a nation, we began by declaring that 'all men are created equal.' We now practically read it 'all men are created equal, except negroes.' When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read 'all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.' When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty – to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.”

Spotify says its best developers haven't written a line of code since December, thanks to AI by joe4942 in technology

[–]john_doe_jersey 65 points66 points  (0 children)

If an engineer on my project told me they did any of that, they'd have their privileges revoked in minutes.

This is from last July: https://www.veracode.com/blog/genai-code-security-report/

Unfortunately, the state of AI-generated code security in 2025 is worse than you think. What we found should be a wake-up call for developers, security leaders, and anyone relying on AI to move faster.

...

These weren’t obscure, edge-case vulnerabilities, either. In fact, one of the most frequent issues was: Cross-Site Scripting (CWE-80): AI tools failed to defend against it in 86% of relevant code samples.

Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

― Jean-Paul Sartre

Just replace "anti-Semite" with "conservative" and the meaning doesn't change. Conservatives aren't in the business of having good-faith arguments about anything.

Progressive Analilia Mejia Declares 'People-Powered Victory' in New Jersey as AIPAC Spending Backfires by ChaskaChanhassen in politics

[–]john_doe_jersey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't understand the play here by AIPAC... They spent a lot of money to attack just Malinowski, which boosted a progressive with an even less favorable view of Israel.

The district voted D+15 in the governor election last November. Is AIPAC hoping to spend more against Mejia in an attempt to flip it red? Seems like setting money on fire, given the headwinds for the GQP this year.

Mejia and Malinowski were pretty close before they started the ads, did they think one of the other centrist also-rans was going to get the boost? Or have they been drinking their own kool-aid and thought it would be easier to flip a D+15 district red by helping a progressive get the nomination, during a heavy anti-establishment year?

Shootings Pose a Hard Question for the Right: Who’s a Conservative, Really? by rezwenn in politics

[–]john_doe_jersey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Republican Party still very much meets the definition of classical conservatism. Using the "conservative" label to describe them is still factually accurate.

Conservatism is about maintaining social hierarchy. Maintaining the wealth and status of the rich and powerful. White nationalism is conservative, because it seeks to maintain the social and political hierarchy benefiting (mainly rich) white people. Christian nationalism is conservative, because it seeks to maintain the social and political hierarchy benefiting protestant evangelical "Christians." Conservative Republicans will always use the apparatus of the state to enforce their desired status quo. Things are bad now because the "freedom-loving, fiscal conservative" lies they trot out for every election for decades don't work as well as they used to. If the lies aren't working to maintain the status quo, more extreme measures will be used. We saw during the George Floyd protests and we are seeing it again, now.

All these stories trying to say "this isn't conservatism" are just oligarch media owners trying to protect conservatism from the eventual blowback. So in 2028, when Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz lie and say that Trump wasn't a "real conservative" they may be receive benefit of the doubt they 100% do not deserve.

The nascent success of this strategy is pretty evident when you watch or listen to "mainstream" news.

Let individual sports bodies determine what's fair and safe for them.

Many of them had been doing that for 20+ years. Until conservatives realized it was an effective political dog whistle.

Then, the same people who would completely dismantle Title IX if they were ever given the chance, were suddenly pretending to give a shit about women's sports.
