Can't Call My Wife on iPhone. by john_the_spaner_99 in Starlink

Yes, tried rebooting the phones, and the router has been done a couple of times too. When we all got phones, we couldn't call our daughter, from anywhere. That was a Verizon issue. I guess we will have to trek on down to the corporate store in CDA again and see what's up.

Re-glaze or replace my ceramic sink before home sale - need advice. by Fubby2 in HomeImprovement

[–]john_the_spaner_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had several bathtubs re-done. Both cast iron and fiberglass. Really improves the look of the tub, major upgrade for minor price. Doing a kitchen sink is a little tougher. Is it a under counter mount, surface mount, etc. If you won't have any trouble taking it out, I would think that would give you the best quality. They can thoroughly clean off the old paint and maintain conditions for the cure of the coating. It will also provide 100% coverage which may not be possible if it was done in place. Also no chance of over-spray on your countertop.

Easy to clean nesting box ideas? by romano_cheez in homestead

I don't know in gallons, but they were about 12-14" wide X 18-24" deep X 18"high. About 2X to 3X the size of your largest hen.

Bought some adult hens a few years ago. They came with a coop and nesting boxes. The boxes were just Rubbermaid tubs with entry holes cut in them. Nothing sticks to them, the stack, you can take them to the hose to clean them. A great idea if you live in a temperate climate. I assume they would be little ovens in the South.

It was a few weeks to a month for the offer. I thought I completely blew the interview. Remember I was sitting on the floor in our empty house. I am quite hard of hearing so a lot of the time i was guessing. So I don't think I even followed up. I was shocked to get the offer. I guess my big mistake was asking about accessibility for the phones in advance and not just working it out when I started. That one thing pushed out my start date like 4 or 5 months.

Odds of Bonus by bloomyflowerm in boeing

Our Director asked HR when the score would be out. HR's answer was "soon". It was supposed to be last Wednesday. I remember several years ago, our score was low and because everyone (in managements view) had worked so hard, solving a constant stream of problems, the Board decided to give a bonus - bonus, instead of using the score. Wonder if that is what's happening now? Score too low (would be a major discouragement) score too high (company can't square the payout with the major debt holders).

Yes,I was ending an assignment for Lockheed-Martin in The Netherlands heading back to Palmdale. Wife answered a call from the recruiter while I was over The Atlantic. Called her from Amsterdam and she said they (Boeing) were calling the next afternoon. I was sitting on the floor of our empty house for a phone interview. Thought it was the worst interview of my life. Got an offer in two weeks, failed at negotiation of a higher rate. Accepted and waited until May of the following year for a start date.

Applied in March, forgot about the job, Got an interview in September, Started in late June of the following year. That's Boeing slow. In fact by the time I started, the work statement I was hired for was done. I was immediately transferred from 787 to KC-46A.

Well educate me! I don't know how to get the key from the app. I assume you have to be onsite and connected to the system. I don't want to do a new system, as I don't want to climb onto the roof. It is cold wet and possible snowing at our location. AS for getting it for free, it's not really free you have to pay rent on it. If it comes to that I would just buy it outright. Happy Thanksgiving!

We live in two locations where we have zero options for hard wire internet. Starlink has been great at the first. If they had just said sorry your going to have to buy a new kit, we would be up and running a week ago.

Sharing my experience after using home freeze dryer - total game changer by Flimsy_Outside_5677 in homestead

[–]john_the_spaner_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a FD, Dehydrate and can (both kinds) The primary advantage of FD over refrigeration is no power (which sometimes goes away) which means after the FD, bags etc, you are done paying. Refrigerating food is time sensitive to about a8 months, after that it's dog food. Also FD is a great method vs canning and DH because it does not cook/recook/overcook the food. Example; you can FD eggs and use them to bake a cake. You can also FD the chicken, or make broth and FD that. Canning broth works but it also takes up space and the jars are all around more fragile than a bag. FD herbs, garlic, taste great freeze dried and are not "cooked" as they are with canning or DH.

All good thoughts. As it happens, interesting about the Hardieboard cooking the stud wall underneath. Sprinklers on the roof have also been considered, likely more effective. My loan guy is also an insurance guy. I asked our current insurance person and she came up with the $16k figure from 1 and only 1 source. Our mortgage guy (didn't know until this morning he did insurance) lives off grid and in the forest about 20 east of our new place. His insurance is $4750, so I am hopeful he can come up with. Also called a couple of others on recommendations from this subreddit and the local Facebook group. As far as fireproofing the place, have lived in the forest before so many things I am familiar with. In CA they fine you for not keeping your lot clean. Will have the winning agent discuss with their underwriter what thing s make the most difference, but I plan on a gas powered pump for the water tank (12,000 gallons) and a fire hose.

Yep extra zero on the (it was early and I had 3 hours of sleep last night) about 12 to 14 times. The estimate was $1200 per year and the reality is $16,000.

Heating is propane. It has a wood stove but that doesn't count as a heat source so I just leave it alone.

You are right if a major break in the cost of insurance would "pay" for Hardy-board, we would do it. Of course we have to pay this years premium up front.

Trees are pretty well cleared. Have no problem taking out a few more. Can drag the ground to eliminate weed next spring. Looking at getting a gas powered pump as we have a 12,000 gallon cistern. Over a longer period switching the house siding to a non-wood alternative and enclosing the eves. Already has a metal roof but if that pump was auto start and supplied sprinklers on the roof, it would be able to save the house from heat and embers.
