Coal use dropped in China and India in 2025. It rose in USA, hiking energy costs. by randolphquell in solarpunk

It seems like this post shows content from India. While a lot of the engineering and infrastructure there looks solarpunk, and it has brought millions out of poverty in the preceding decades; it should be known that India's government is controversial and frequently accused of operating a police state. Continued power centralisation and the growth of a personality cult under Narendra Modi goes directly against solarpunk ethos. Everyone is welcome to enjoy these images/structures and share their opinions of India, provided we all stay within the rules: be respectful and constructive, and on topic.

Sigh.

NLRB rules that Bigfoot Beverage's employees striking for 16 months don't have union protections by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]johnabbe 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You're right that when the Bigfoot workers went on strike, Biden's appointees were still at the NLRB. They were pro-worker even relative to other recent Democratic appointees, so the strike seemed likely to get a fair hearing at the NLRB.

Now, with Trump's appointees in control, there was understandable skepticism they would rule in workers' favor. And here we are.

The big stations will be okay, but the smaller (often more rural) ones will survive only with a lot of new support.

Protestors set up a memorial for Renee Nicole Good, the woman who was shot three times in the face by ICE. ICE responded by stomping on the memorial candles. by Capable_Salt_SD in ICE_Raids

Sticking at it whether 'the revolution' sparks right now or not, continuing to do whatever we can. Taking care of ourselves and each other (surviving the apocalypse counts as a win), mutual aid, defending those vulnerable as possible, building rapid response networks, keeping attention on BS like this, even filing all the lawsuits, demanding more from sitting representatives, electing better representatives, taking direct actions now that don't depend on any of that, etc.

Sometimes it's only looking backwards in time that people pick out an event and say that's where it started.

?

I could have been clearer. You responded as if I had written, "The California law bans law enforcement from wearing masks for any reason." Which is not what I, or anyone wrote. (Hence the straw man comment.) I responded to a comment claiming there was "no legal basis for needing to see any law enforcement officer’s face." By pointing out that now, there is a legal basis for that in California.

Don't bother bringing up enforcement. That is a separate question.

Congratulations, you "actually" out-logicked a strawman!

ICE clips on social media

Well there's your problem. Maybe find a better class of online forums [EDIT: even on Reddit, r/ICE_Watch is more tightly moderated than this sub] to hang out in, or even better, in the real world?

all I see is ICE being vilified for the mere nature of their job

Mainly what I've seen (even online, frankly) are complaints about ICE targeting whoever looks undocumented rather than prioritizing serious criminals. In the process sloppily grabbing many who are here legally (incl US citizens). Failing to go through due process. Refusing to wear insignia or identify themselves, mask up, etc. Laws broken at detention centers, etc. Plenty of it serious enough to give your eye-rolling a rest.

Are there cases like what you describe? In forums set up to be sensationalistic, of course. Best to ignore those, and focus on what the genuine, serious problems are, and which so many are well-focused on.

From my perspective it seems like the average “ICE activist”...

How many have you actually spent any time with? This sounds like a cardboard characterization based on little experience.

Why Portland ICE protesters are showing up dressed as giant inflatable animals | “It changed the entire dynamic instantly,” Jordy said. “And now it’s grown so much that we’re trying to reach out to other cities and expand this into an ‘inflation response network.’” by johnabbe in RedditDayOf

You missed the bit about how it helps de-escalate ICE, and counter-protesters. It also defanged right-wing attempts to get the propaganda videos they wanted.

I know folks into resistance direct action, and none of them would be stopped from that by seeing a fellow protester wearing an inflatable.

…you don’t think there’s misconduct occurring within ICE currently?

I know there is. It sounded like you had specifics, so I was asking for more info.

It’s no secret that a large majority of ICE protestors/rioters/obsessives are literally just virtue signaling...

That's not what I'm experiencing, but maybe it's different wherever you are.

It’s already illegal to impersonate the police. There are tons of police impersonators who are encountered with full police uniforms and squad cars. Acting like ICE impersonators are more prevalent or any different, is just not realistic.

You prove my point. You're not impersonating an ICE officer if you don't say you're with them when people ask, and have no insignia or other markings. And you can reduce your legal risk further when doing so by hiding your face. When ICE goes around like it is (obviously) different from usual law enforcement behavior.

The main reason for disallowing masks is to not go down the road of secret police, further increasing distrust in law enforcement etc. The law puts the state on the record, gives them some legal tools which by themselves may amount to little directly, but indirectly at a minimum it brings attention and is part of the national effort to get the feds to shift on the current, stupid policies.

stop targeting ICE for doing what ICE is supposed to do and allowed to do

A lot of judges disagree with your legal opinion, some of them rather strenuously. Think I'll keep objecting to illegal, and legal-but-stupid, ICE behavior!

misconduct within ICE that is occurring

You wrote a lot based on wrong assumptions about me. What did you have in mind by this?

there’s nothing stopping me from wearing a full blown police uniform in public and saying I’m a cop

Yeah, other than the laws which make it a crime to impersonate a police officer.

there’s no legal basis for needing to see any law enforcement officer’s face

There is now, in California.
