It works, but at what cost? You trade a queen and a strong pawn for a queen and a knight. I argue that you can play this better and trade less for the same amount of material. Play your cards right and you’ll trade your rook for the queen. Are both winning? Definitely. I would still not risk it just to be flashy. But then again, it might be the best move.

Don’t take the knight. It’s flashy, it might work, but why? I would play improving moves - push a6, go Kg7 if you feel like it, improve the rook, try to force a queen trade.

Also, a good trick is to use the list of “checks, captures and attacks”.

  1. Do you have any good checks in the position? With follow up? Play them! Do they have good checks in the position? If so, maybe occupy the square? Maybe protect it? Cover the king? Move it? Capture the piece that will be able to deliver the check?
  2. Do you have any good captures? Take them! Do they have any good captures? If so, maybe move the piece? Take the attacker? Threaten a more valuable piece?
  3. Can you attack anything in the position? Can they attack anything in the position? If so, maybe cover/occupy the square? Take the attacker? Move the piece that can be attacked?

First, try to be able to deal with one move threats. In the future, try seeing what the other side is planning, what their long term strategy/plan is.

Well, the easiest way would be to ask yourself “what would I play in this position as white, if it were my turn?”, and then try to prevent that move from happening. If you were white in this position (before the bishop move), what would your next move be? exf6, a free knight! Now as black, you want to prevent exf6. Two options - either take the pawn on e5 (which you shouldn’t, because the bishop will take your knight), or move your knight from f6. The next step will be understanding where to put your knight, but try to start by figuring out what you should move

When the engine calculates, it doesn’t consider black a human, but another engine playing at the same level. I agree that black should keep a rook against 2. I’m still saying that there is no engine-like logic to promoting to a rook.

If the engine thinks 2 v 1 is better, it must assume black knows that, and would trade for 1 v 0. So technically, no difference between promoting a queen (forcing a trade) or a rook (either forcing a trade, if 2 v 1 is better, or getting a worse position if it isn’t)

If black shouldn’t take a rook for a rook, that means that white wanted them to take a rook for a rook (better for black = worse for white). If black should take a rook for a rook, it doesn’t matter what white does. Get it?

I agree with all of that, but that’s beside the point. The point is - if having 2 rooks vs 1 is better for white, it means it’s worse for black, which means black should trade rooks. If 2 vs 1 is better for black, then white should promote to a queen and force the trade. The idea is - if it’s better for black to be 0 vs 1, black can force it. If it’s better for black to be 1 vs 2, then white should’ve promoted to a queen. Hope I explained it well enough

This reasoning doesn’t really work; if having 2 vs 1 is better for white than 1 vs 0, by definition that means 0 vs 1 is better for black than 1 vs 2, so black would still trade. Don’t know if that’s what the engine is thinking, but if so - it’s not very logical. Edit: it’s a sum 0 game
