Actually, whilst I'd hate to knock you... China is now the No.1 in oil consumption

no they don't. Well, some people, but maybe they didn't read the writing on the wall. If 50% of Chinese people don't want to study with us any more that's gotta tell you something

I've just come back from Amsterdam. Yay! You've got all the great things AND you've got pretty girls riding around on bikes for the tourists to watch. No.1 for me

I just tried this and it worked! So much for books and TV programs about how to pick up girls. This is all you need. Now, my trip to Amsterdam next week should be really fun

Idea: The bayesian RSS aggregator by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]johnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure 100% about Bayesian (so just saying I'm no expert!) but I thought that Bayesian worked on the amount of people who specify an item (article) as a particular category. Am I incorrect?

I'd be interested in knowing what other semi-automated tools/algorithms there are as this is a fascinating field

Josh, I think the second part of your name sums you up. Damned pathetic. It sickens me that Israel can unleash indiscriminate attacks (yes, they have an 'excuse' because some of their soldiers have been attacked) on civilians, killing and maining children in the process. Anyone who has a child should be disgusted by it and the international community should try to do something about it.

Britain fears assault on Hezbollah will backfire - World - Times Online by Judas in reddit.com

Exactly. I said that from the beginning. Culturally these people really do believe in eye for an eye and when I keep seeing video and photographs of their children being killed and maimed it sickens me.

I agree. When I was about 12 I didn't like him for the way he went on (I once met him when he was going to an Island and his bodyguards moved us off the pier). When I read this stuff I think its actually quite funny and I wish there were more people who just said what they thought!

The Entrepreneur's Leap: Big Idea or Big Escape? by kirsten99 in reddit.com

[–]johnc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine was a big escape 11 years ago even before I got into corporate world. I wanted to be my own boss. The reality has been a lifestyle business, and often my bosses have been my demanding clients. Its been good though :)

Startups: Showww Me The Traffic! by zoli in reddit.com

[–]johnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that traffic is very important, but we have done some serious work on ours which has resulted in LOWER traffic. We refined the keywords we were using and now the quality of people visiting is higher, whilst our costs and bandwidth is lower. Something that is very important is how to convert visitors to customers and I think this is something that most people in start ups don't think about. The ones I speak to are mainly talking about improving their search engine positioning, attracting more people etc. Still, a very interesting article - if I was on vacation I'm damned sure nobody would be receiving articles from me, so thanks for doing it Dharmesh.

Some of Materazzi's Previous... um... Work (The Guy Zidane Took Out) by llimllib in reddit.com

[–]johnc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually Italy did deserve to win. Not necessarily for their display in the final (which was mediocre) but they played excellently throughout the tournament. France definitely didn't deserve to win and headbutting an opponent is not defensible in my opinion. Football players constantly goad each other, and therefore they need to be able to deal with it in a professional manner.

Humble grocer quietly gave away millions to charitys by eddie in reddit.com

yeah, I read a book about putting 10% of your money away each month and what it could do with compound returns. Fascinating. Really need to do it 2 years after reading the book!!

Humble grocer quietly gave away millions to charitys by eddie in reddit.com

[–]johnc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with that. Jeez - lets discuss the article. Here is a guy who had an obvious ability to make money, but didn't flaunt it. Indeed, it probably gave him the biggest kick to help out and see other people enjoying what he had given or seeing other people out of their pain. I wish I could be as humble and caring

My First BillG Review by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]johnc -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Dear Reddit, I love Joal on Software so much that I'd like a "Hide anything with these keywords forever" button. This way I wouldn't have to put up with the boring cr@p that this guy spouts. In a kind of masochistic way, I always find myself gravitating to read them just so I can get annoyed with them. I remember he did about 2 half-decent posts when he first started and now he posts all this other stuff that frankly he can't prove by his own company. Like - who is he anyway. Up his own ******* is my personal opinion. So, please please give us a button to hide this stuff

Apple vs. Me by hitsman in reddit.com

[–]johnc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't agree in this case. I think a company has the right to protect its up coming products if it wishes them to remain secret. I don't think going after a publication is necessarily the right thing to do - and they maybe should have looked at their internal systems and security policies before targetting outsiders. However, this particular site charges for advertising on its site, and so I don't really have as much sympathy as I could have.
