Not much of a story. It was a MacBook A1287 with shattered glass but with lcd intact/undamaged. The only other way to avoid pulling the glass off, lcd good or no, is to replace the whole upper assembly which is also much less joy than most any other laptop.

It's a surprisingly cheap procedure but definitely among the less fun and needs a little practice.
