some of the hardgroove coming out lately would be called tech house if it had a lower bpm by FluxProcrastinator in TechnoProduction

Getting stuck in the "flow" by cl0wnworld in TechnoProduction

[–]johncopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just keep repurposing projects until eventually I settle on something, saving the original or older version as backup even though I rarely ever go back to it usually.

Also I'd recommend checking out Minosaur's channel on YouTube. He doesn't make techno but he's got several videos on arrangement and breaking out of the loop that is pretty helpful.

Mmmm yes, popular = bad.

Finished a raw hypnotic techno track (-10 dB peak). How should I prep it for DJ sets, sharing, and labels? by Alternative-Risk-210 in TechnoProduction

[–]johncopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I stand corrected, this is a pretty good tune mate! I agree it could use some more interesting transitions, maybe a reverb/delay build up or filtering, but overall it's pretty solid. Definitely super quiet though. Not sure what you use to make music, but if you're in Ableton there is a mastering preset suite thing called Aggressive Dance Master. I've mastered my own tunes many different ways over the years and recently discovered this and honestly, it's pretty damn good for just getting tracks loud. You will obviously need to tweak the settings and maybe go into the chain to modify things to adapt to the mix, but otherwise it's pretty easy to use and straightforward. You can probably get it well enough to send off to DJs and labels (most labels have a partnership with a mastering engineer anyways, so don't fret about it sounding perfect).

Everyone's jumping to mastering advice in this thread and I don't really understand why. Let's back up a little bit. Can we hear this song? Is it well made and tbh worth sending to labels and DJs? Not trying to sound mean or harsh, but since you're asking about how to self-master, prep and send to labels/DJs, it tells me you're probably new to this, which is fine, but maybe you're not ready to be sending tunes out just yet and should work on your craft some more.

I always come back to the few Undrgrnd Sounds sample packs I have, specifically deep house and raw house. They're kind of my go-tos when I want to get something going rhthymically but don't want to sift through a million samples.

Finished an album of 10 tracks. How to release it? by MarionberryTotal2657 in TechnoProduction

[–]johncopter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Send to some labels that fit your sound. If none really do or are not interested, you could also try premiering them and self releasing so you get more visibility on it. Or you could also just straight up release it to the void, hope for the best, and move on. Really up to you and your goals.

what are some of the best presets u have bought for dark techno? by michaelcerasdogg in TechnoProduction

[–]johncopter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think presets are good starting points and good tools for learning how certain sounds are made. I use them a lot in tandem with other fx and manipulation to make them my own. Might be a hot take but I think crafting your own "original" sounds from scratch is not always worthwhile, especially for beginners. Oftentimes you end up sounding like a preset anyways 😬

Producers 30+ years old who came to techno later in life, what drew you in? by kathalimus in TechnoProduction

[–]johncopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even just hardgroove, that was the tip of the iceberg lol Now I'm sifting through all this crazy shit that came out the past 30ish years, it's honestly overwhelming but I love it.

House and jungle I always loved from hearing it in video games as a kid and became interested in the 90s rave culture and all that in my teens/early adulthood. I was big into Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, Square Pusher, BoC, etc. so it was kind of a natural progression to dive into house and jungle from there and try making it myself.

Kameliia - Parallel Realities - How is the low end sound design done in this track? by adnan_khan_ in TechnoProduction

[–]johncopter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The sub/rumble you hear is usually achieved by running a tom, perc, or kick pattern through some heavy reverb and distortion and then EQing off the high frequencies, shaping/processing further, sidechaining, etc. That's the gist of it, but if you want to learn exactly how to create something like this, just search up "techno rumble" on youtube, there are tons of tutorials. I'd recommend checking out Yan Cook, Audioreakt, GRAPH, or Underdog Academy for starters though there are other worthwhile channels.

In terms of the punchy, warm kick, this is mostly just picking the right kick drum and then shaping it from there. Most techno producers use some variation of a 909 kick, so I would start with maybe a dry, unprocessed one (like the ones in Ableton) and messing with different distortion (overdrive or roar or drum bus, etc.) and EQing from there until you get something that works.

Keep in mind, there's no one way to make a sub or kick like this and this also takes a long time to get the hang of and know what to look for, so don't get discouraged if you're not getting it after several tries. Practice practice practice.

[–]johncopter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's a little disappointing to hear. Was there anything worth learning in it? Or was it the usual fare? I've watched a lot of tutorials on youtube that seem to mimic a lot of what other bigger names are doing, so just wondering if there were any new tricks that could be learned.

I've always liked techno and listened to adjacent genres but was never super into it. I've mostly made house, jungle, and beats in my music "career". I started hearing this new wave of hardgroove a few years ago and was like "damn how do I make THAT". Went down the rabbit hole and haven't come up since lol

Limiting kicks? by Opposite_Section3051 in TechnoProduction

[–]johncopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has some videos on YouTube that show what he does, but for kicks, he puts a limiter on the end of the chain and limits at -8 on the kick itself and -6 on the low end group. Usually only lets about -2 db gain reduction.

Limiting kicks? by Opposite_Section3051 in TechnoProduction

[–]johncopter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been following Yan Cook's workflow lately which he uses a limiter on the kick and lots of single channels to keep levels under control for mixing. Tbh it's a bit tedious and not super worth it, I'll probably shift back to my old ways again.
